HIGH CALORIE DIET

Calories are the basic unit of energy found in all foods and are necessary to maintain the body's vital functions or basal metabolic rate. The amount of calories a person needs depends on factors like their age, gender, and lean muscle mass. Eating too few calories for a prolonged period of time causes a person to become underweight (per the BMI) leading to muscle atrophy, weakened immunity, and eventually, organ failure.

Conversely, eating too many calories causes a person to become overweight and obese, increasing their chances of heart disease, type II diabetes, and cancer. The amount of calories a person needs depends on their age, gender, activity level, and muscle mass. The DV for calories is 2000 calories.

A high caloric diet is an allowance o food and drink with an energy value of 50-100% above the required for maintenance in order to produce a gain in weight, to meet increased calorie requirements, or to prevent or minimize the catabolism of body tissues. This diet contains approximately 3000 kcalories. It is based on full or soft diet with the following modifications:

Two servings of meat each mealTwo servings of bread and butter at breakfastMid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks

Indications:For patient who are underweight, febrile, or emanciated from disease and in conditions that require slowing down of catabolism.
