2021|5782 Hashiveinu Adonai eilecha v’nashuva, chadesh yameinu k’kedem – Return us to you Adonai, and we will return; renew our days as before. (Lamentations 5:21) A Note from Rabbi Valerie This verse could be the slogan for the High Holy Days. We cry out to God: You go first! You bring us back to You! Not the other way around. This verse says that God initiates our teshuva, our repentance, and once God does God’s job, then we can return to God. Only then can we return to the right path. And once we return, all will be renewed – made new – just like it was before we turned away. When I read this verse as I began preparing for 5782, the words shouted at me: it’s now – this is exactly what is happening today! If we return back to public spaces and gatherings of people, everything will be like it was before, right? Not exactly, not in repentance and not in our every- day lives. Once we return from brokenness – our own or the world’s or both, nothing will be the same because we have changed. But in the turning, in the steps of moving forward in a positive way, we can be renewed. Made new. Like emerging from a cleansing rain or a mikvah… the past is not erased but given meaning, and we are revitalized. As we enter 5782, may these High Holy Days give meaning to the past year and bring renewal for our future. We really need to focus on caring for each other, a most important Jewish value – Kehillah Kedoshah – protecting the community by safeguarding the health and dignity of all. So, in being guided by what we have read and heard from health professionals, we have decided that High Holy Days services – with the exception of Family Services and Tashlich – will be conducted virtually again this year. We are saddened that COVID will again keep us apart physically, but we can take something positive out of this by knowing we are still spiritually together in the moment. - Sincerely, Paula Selvitella, President

Hashiveinu Adonai eilecha v’nashuva, chadesh yameinu k’kedem –Return us to you Adonai, and we will return; renew our days as before. (Lamentations 5:21)

A Note from Rabbi Valerie

This verse could be the slogan for the High Holy Days. We cry out to God: You go first! You bring us back to You! Not the other way around. This verse says that God initiates our teshuva, our repentance, and once God does God’s job, then we can return to God. Only then can we return to the right path. And once we return, all will be renewed – made new – just like it was

before we turned away.

When I read this verse as I began preparing for 5782, the words shouted at me: it’s now – this is exactly what is happening today! If we return back to public spaces and gatherings of people, everything will be like it was before, right? Not exactly, not in repentance and not in our every-day lives. Once we return from brokenness – our own or the world’s or both, nothing will be the same because we have changed. But in the turning, in the steps of moving forward in a positive way, we can be renewed. Made new. Like emerging from a cleansing rain or a mikvah… the past

is not erased but given meaning, and we are revitalized.

As we enter 5782, may these High Holy Days give meaning to the past year and bring renewal for our future.
