High Holy Day Preparation

Traditional Greetings for the High Holy Days

For Rosh HaShanah the complete and elegant greeting is:

L’Shanah Tovah Tikateivu May you be inscribed for a good year.

This greeting is based on the idea expressed in the High Holy Day liturgy that God writes the fate of each individual on Rosh HaShanah and seals it on Yom Kippur. A shortened version of this greeting (and theologically simpler) is:

Shanah Tovah A good year

You can use the above greetings throughout the holy day season, but during the Ten Days of Repentance and Yom Kippur we also greet each other with the wish that our inscription in the “Book of Life” be sealed in a good way. The full greeting is:

Gamar Chatimah Tovah May it conclude with a good seal

Many people shorten the greeting to:

Gamar Tov A good conclusion or

Chatimah Tovah A good seal

For the festival of Sukkot and Atzeret/Simchat Torah, the message changes to happiness and celebration. In the traditional, elaborate Sukkot greeting, one person greets another:

Moadim L’simchah Special times are for happiness!

The other person responds:

Chagim U’zmanim L’Sasson Holidays and festivals for Joy!

Of course, most people will greet each other with the equally appropriate and much simpler:

Chag Sameyach Happy Holiday or

Good Yontiff Anglo-Yiddish for “Happy Holiday”

Roasted Chicken and Eggplant in Pomegranate and Date MolassesCantor Rebecca Robins

Rosh Hashanah is not just apples and honey! Jewish communities around the world remind us that the new year celebration includes many more delicacies. Check out this amazing recipe from Vered Guttman celebrating the pomegranates eaten in Israel for the new year! (I made it, and I’m definitely making it for Erev Rosh Hashanah with some simple roasted veggies – even the toddler ate it, once I scraped off the ‘sauce.’ Yum!)

1 eggplant, peeled in stripes and cut into 2-inch cubes2 T. plus 2 t. kosher salt, divided½ cup date molasses (I definitely bought this on Amazon)¼ cup pomegranate molasses (This too)1/3 cup olive oil6 chicken thighs (I left the skin on. Yum. It’s a holiday after all!)6 chicken drumsticks2 lbs baby potatoes or golden potatoes, cut into 2-inch cubes (I used baby Yukon golds. Pretty!)

Preheat oven to 400°. Put eggplant cubes in a large bowl, cover with water, and mix in 2 T kosher salt. Set aside for 30 min – 2 hours. (This totally changes the taste – no bitterness – and texture of the eggplant. I left it for the whole time!) Mix date and pomegranate molasses with olive oil and 2 tsp kosher salt in a bowl.

Pat dry chicken. (If using kosher chicken, give it a rinse). Drain and pat dry eggplant. Mix chicken and eggplant with the molasses mixture. Spray a large ovenproof pan with oil. Arrange potatoes at the bottom, sprinkle with salt, and then chicken and eggplant over potatoes. Push the eggplant pieces aside so they are not covering the chicken.

Roast for 45-50 minutes, basting the chicken and eggplant about every 10-12 minutes. Serve hot.

Elul: Are You Ready?Fridays in September

The month of Elul is all about preparation- doing the introspection, and the teshuva (repentance) that will enable you to be spiritually prepared for the High Holidays.

At Temple Sinai, we use our Friday evening Shabbat services during the month of Elul as an opportunity to do this preparation collectively. We will integrate the themes of the High Holidays into our worship and the sermons will be focused on getting us ready as well. This year, each of the sermons during the month of Elul

will focus on a part of the High Holiday liturgy, prayers that address the distinct themes of the season. Join us to prepare, reflect and learn.

Elul, Selichot, & Tashlich

TashlichMonday, September 30; exact time and location to be announced

Throw your sins away! Join us for Tashlich on the afternoon of Rosh HaShanah. A liturgy is read and sung

and we toss bread crumbs (symbolic of our sins) into the flowing creek. Bring your shofar and join the communal shofar blasts. This is an event for everyone – families with young children and adults of all ages. No tickets are required.

Selichot ShabbatFriday, September 27 at 6:30 PM

Its almost here! Selichot (forgiveness) is your last chance to get yourself in the right headspace for the High Holidays. The traditional Selichot liturgy is a series of penitential prayers. At Temple Sinai, we bring the themes of Selichot into our final Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah. At the service, we will begin to hear the familiar musical themes of the holidays and change our Torah covers to white as we mark our final Shabbat of preparation before the days of awe.

Break the Fast sponsored by the TSWRJ

Tickets are not needed for afternoon programs or the Healing Service. One ticket covers all afternoon services beginning at 3:15 PM.

The times listed for Yom Kippur afternoon services are close approximations. We try to keep as close to the listed times as possible but the services flow one into the next and may not end exactly as noted here.

All are welcome to attend the Break-Fast.

Healing ServiceYom Kippur is a time of prayer and introspection, and it is also a day when we are asked to stand before God as our most vulnerable selves. Our healing service is open to all who seek a comforting and peaceful place to ask God for healing of body, mind, and soul. The service will incorporate our healing liturgy with moments of music, silence, and meditation. Tickets are not required.

Afternoon (Mincha, Yizkor, & Neilah) ServicesOur Mincha (afternoon) service will include a reading of the story of Jonah. Members of Temple Sinai’s Multiracial Sinai Committee will reflect on the Jonah story through personal stories of challenge and change. As we contemplate how we hope to change in the New Year, Jews of color and white Jews will reflect on how their racial experiences connect to their commitment to antiracist action in pursuit of social change. The Yizkor (memorial) service will follow at 4:45 PM. At approximately 5:30 PM, we begin the Neilah (concluding) service. At the end of the Neilah service, we will continue our tradition of a communal “Tekiah Gedolah” (Great Sounding) of shofars, when all who have brought a shofar will be invited to join in the final blast. We expect to end Neilah and break fast as a congregation at approximately 6:45 PM. Tickets are required for the afternoon services; all are welcome at no charge.

Congregational Break-Fast

To conclude Yom Kippur, the Temple Sinai Women of Reform

Judaism will sponsor a light congregational

Break-Fast in the social hall.

All are welcome.

Learn, Connect, ReflectThere will be several simultaneous discussion groups in different areas of the temple. These discussion groups are designed as opportunities to focus on the new year through various lenses.

Lessons from the Campaign Trail & Communications OfficeTeshuva requires us to look deeply into ourselves to acknowledge and fix our past misdeeds. Crisis communications and political campaigns involve the most unforgiving and deep examinations of a person’s or business’ past. Who better to give us insights than the people who help today’s national candidates and multinational organizations to manage their reputations and images? Speakers TBA.

Music MeditationThis hour will provide an opportunity for self-reflection as we listen to the music of Yom Kippur.

“Hear our call, Adonai our God, Show us compassion.”Our prayer today is an inward journey that takes you deep within yourself, pierces you to the core…You stand on the holy summit of your prayer and see before you the land within: A weary soul yearning to be forgiven, longing to be loved.

(adapted from From T’filah to Vidui to s’lichot, based on a concept by Rabbi Elaine Zecher)

Racial (In)Justice in the News and at HomeJoin Rabbi Goldstein and Adam Serwer, a senior editor of The Atlantic and a lifelong member of the Temple Sinai community, for a conversation about systems of racial oppression in our country and how they impact us.

Join us as Adam shares his deep insights on race and culture in America while also reflecting on his own experiences growing up in our community.

Festival Services

SukkotJoin us Sunday evening, October 13th, as we welcome Sukkot with our Tots (kindergarteners and younger!) and their families on a fun and festive sensory journey of Sukkot. Come along as we smell, see, taste, touch, and listen to the beautiful sounds of this holiday at 5 PM, and stay and hang in our sukkah for dinner immediately following.

On Monday morning, October 14th, join us at 10:00 AM at Temple Emanuel as we celebrate the start of the Sukkot festival with our congregational partners from Temple Emanuel and Temple Shalom, and summon the rain to begin to fall!

The Sukkot celebration continues into the week – and join us on Friday October 18th for a Shabbat Sukkot celebration where, embracing the tradition of welcoming all into the sukkah, we can celebrate our Temple Sinai community. Join our membership committee at our 2nd annual ‘Find Your Connection Fair’ beginning at 6 PM, and stay for a festive service honoring our new and 50-year members.

Do you need a lulav and etrog for your own sukkah? A form is included in the order form packet.

Shemini Atzeret & Simchat TorahAt Temple Sinai, we celebrate two holidays on the same day: one celebrating the Torah, the other for the end of Sukkot. On the evening of October 20th, we will simultaneously complete and begin the annual cycle of the reading of the Torah. At this Simchat Torah festival service, congregants of all ages will join in seven hakafot (processionals) around the sanctuary with flags, festive music, and dancing and singing in honor of the Torah. The service will be followed by a sweet Oneg.

The next morning, a Community Festival Morning Service will be held at 10 AM at Temple Shalom. We will meet for prayer, the recitation of Yizkor (the communal memorial ceremony), and more Torah processionals as we observe Shemini Atzeret (“the 8th day of Assembly” described in the Torah, an add-on day to Sukkot). A Kiddush Luncheon will follow the service.
