We trust our lives to it. Radar technology
equals safety for passengers and cargo on
craft travelling sea, air and space.
No mechanical system can match this. Rosemount TankRadar STaR gives you
independent, radar-based high-level and overfill alarms for safe and reliable
loading of cargo tanks. The system is virtually maintenance-free. Never any
need to open the tank.
This is the first radar-based high-level and overfill alarm system in the market,
part of the technology pioneering within Emerson Process Management.
Introducing radar-basedhigh-level & overfill alarms
Whenever onboard a plane we
trust the pilot and the operatives
in the air traffic control tower.
But what about them? Where do
they put their trust to be able to
track planes and guide them to a
smooth landing?
You know the answer: the radar
instruments. We trust the people,
knowing they trust the radar.
For demanding applications
Just as the captain of a ship trusts
the radar for navigating. Meteo-
rologists use radars for weather
forecasts, for monitoring storms
and tornadoes. At NASA, radar
technology is used for mapping
the topography of the earth and
other planets.
The superior technology
It’s safe to say that radar is a
trusted and proven technology.
In 1976, we introduced radar tech-
nology to tank gauging.
What we pioneered then is
accepted as the industry stan-
dard today – because radar offers
safety, reliability, accuracy and
operational benefits that no other
technology can match.
Thanks to radar technology
there are no moving parts inside
the tank. Nothing ever gets stuck,
breaks down or requires any
maintenance. Thirty years and
five generations systems later,
more than 2,500 tankers have
been equipped with Rosemount
TankRadar systems. This is trust.
Liability or reliability?
In fact, those who run ships with
Rosemount TankRadar systems
onboard trust the gauging func-
tionality for topping tanks to the
limit.
The radar gauging system is so
reliable that the mechanical high-
level and overfill alarms in use
never come into play. They are not
called upon.
Some operators do not even
know whether their floats work or
not, because they cannot recall
having had any need for them.
And who knows what would
have happened if they really had
needed them?
The safety, efficacy and conve-
nience of radar is unsurpassed,
and trusted throughout the global
marine industry for accurate and
reliable tank gauging.
A superior technology
But what about mechanical sys-
tems? Considering the facts, they
can never be an alternative to
radar gauging.
Mechanical systems are not
proven. They are based on moving
parts inside the tank. They don’t
stand up to the challenge of an
aggressive tank environment. They
wear down, break down, get stuck,
get bent and can’t be trusted. And
when they break down you have
to get inside the tank to sort them
out. That’s why about 90% of tank-
ers sailing today use radar level
gauging.
Still, when it comes to high-level
and overfill alarms, more than 90%
use mechanical systems .
These are used only because
they are located separately from
the tank gauging system – they
are not used on the merits of their
reliability, safety or quality perfor-
mance.
Trust the radar
The ideal solution is to apply the
proven technology also to sepa-
rate, independent high-level and
overfill alarms. This is exactly what
we have done. Besides level gaug-
ing, Rosemount TankRadar STaR
offers independent, radar-based
high-level and overfill alarms.
In fact, high-level and overfill
are less complex applications than
level gauging. It stands to reason.
Since you can gauge accurately
and reliably over a whole measur-
ing range by means of radar, you
can also measure by means of
Reliable high-level & overfill alarms, anyone?
Rosemount TankRadar STaR offers you fully
integrated radar-based high-level and overfill
alarms – ensuring safe and reliable operation
and a long problem-free service life. The most
significant benefits are:
Virtually maintenance-free
All service from outside
No tank intrusion
No moving parts inside tank
Password-protected limits
Separate, independent channels
Battery back-up
radar a certain point of high level
and another certain point of maxi-
mum tank capacity.
Independent systems
The Tank Gauging Unit (TGU) of
Rosemount TankRadar STaR is de-
signed as three separate systems
contained in the same unit.
The three systems operate
with separate signals in separate
channels, working independently
of each other. The electronics
for data capture and information
processing outside the tank is also
designed as three separate, intrin-
sically safe systems.
Reliability at work
This system is the first radar-based
high-level and overfill alarm system
in the market, with all the benefits
of radar-based level gauging:
No moving parts inside the
tank. This means increased safety
and reliability, as well as minimal
maintenance requirements.
All service is carried out from the
outside under closed tank condi-
tions.
Automatic self-testing ensures
uninterrupted reliable function.
Battery back-up ensures unin-
terrupted operation for 30 minutes
in case of temporary power failure.
High security: password-pro-
tected change of alarm limits.
Rosemount TankRadar STaR reference: Bro Jupiter
When Swedish shipping company Broströms purchased Bro Jupiter,
the tanker was thoroughly upgraded. As part of this, a Rosemount
TankRadar STaR system was installed, utilizing both level gauging and
high-level alarm functionality. STaR replaced previous level gauging
and high-level alarm systems. Bro Jupiter, built in 1999, is a product
tanker of 14,369 dwt with 12 cargo tanks.
Multiple solutions: Depending on tanker notification,
class and type of cargo, the system can be used for level,
high level and/or overfill alarms using one, two or all
three electronic boards.
Up to three independent channels for Level/Ullage
Gauging, High-Level & Overfill Alarms – galvanically
separated and intrinsically safe. Separate systems for
data capture and information processing.
Integrated solution keeps cost down: Quick and
easy installation. One single deck penetration means
more space on deck, less cabling and a competitive
price compared to other systems.
