Is giving back part of your routine? Start today by incorporat-ing philanthropy into your monthly budget. Become part of our Sustainers Club by giving $20 or more a month! It is an afford-able way to invest in helping others and significantly further our work.

Your consistent, monthly donations will help us do things like provide snacks in our afterschool programs and pay for other program needs not covered by grants. Sustainers Club mem-bers receive unlimited joy and satisfaction from helping our community.

In 2014, Neighborhood House startedoperating a new program, ShelterDiversion. This program prevents people from entering the shelter system by help-ing stabilize their existing situations.

Shelter Diversion helps people like An-toinette, who had been homeless for six months, find secure housing. Antoinette grew up with a stable family life and de-sired the same for her children, but when she lost her housing voucher because she owed back rent, her world unraveled.

Working part time, owing several months of back rent and having poor credit made it hard for Antoinette to find a home for her family. For six months she stayed in her car while her kids moved between homes of her family and friends. With favors wearing thin and options for her children becoming fewer and fewer, Antoinette needed help.

With staff and resources at our Birch Creek Career Center, Elsa found housing and a job.

In 2005, Elsa was pregnant, home-less and living in a shelter with two of her four children. A recent di-vorce had left her without a stable home and with very few resources.

Eventually, she secured a spot in transitional housing, but the road to becoming self-sufficient was still long and riddled with obsta-cles.

Elsa was determined to make positive changes in her life, which included returning to school.

By using our computer lab to do homework, Elsa graduated with a degree in business management.

At her graduation ceremony, Elsa met Marla Brown, the career cen-ter coordinator at Neighborhood House’s office in Kent.

07.2015

Marla helped her develop a re-sume, practice interviewing, and became her advocate.

Recently, Elsa secured a full-time job and now supports her family.

“Neighborhood house provides all the tools one needs to find suc-cess,” she says. “However, the path is not easy, but the eventual tri-umph is exhilarating,” she adds.

CoHo Team of Windermere Agents, Comcast, King County Housing Authority, Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, Starbucks Coffee Company, Umpqua Bank, Vigor Industrial, Vulcan Inc., and Washington Dental Service Foundation.

Neighborhood House helped Antoinette negotiate an arrangement with her family to ensure that she and her children had a safe place to stay. To guarantee her long-term stability, we paid her back rent so she could receive her housing voucher again, making rent more affordable, and connected her to resources so she could rebuild her credit.

Eventually, Antoinette was able to save enough to move into her own unit with her children, and gained the confidence and fi-nancial savvy to assume rent responsibilities on her own.

Antoinette’s predicament is not unusual. So many times we’ve seen clients move to Se-attle without a safety net, or have their plans to stay with friends and family fall through. Since the program started, we have been able to help 322 people avoid shelters and work towards housing stability.

Many thanks to our 109th Anniversary Breakfast sponsors:

Meet the Trumbowers

In 2014, first-time homeowners Olym-pia and Adam Trumbower celebrated a year in their High Point home in West Seattle with a gift to Neighbor-hood House. They value their diverse community and seeing programs just blocks away at Neighborhood House’s High Point Center.

“We are very intentional with how we give,” says Olympia. “We give to just a few organizations where we know our giving will have a higher impact.”

Each time they give, they amplify their gift by a match through Olympia’s employer, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation generously matches gifts at a rate of three dollars for every one dollar donated.

Thank you Adam and Olympia for be-ing great neighbors!

Knowing their donations help their neighbors inspires the Trumbowers. “We love seeing the local reach first-hand,” says Olympia.
