High School Show ChoirTo Perform At NationalConference

TThe Perth Amboy High SchoolShow Choir will be performingthis spring at the AnnualNational School Boards Confer-ence in Florida.

The Show Choir is a uniqueensemble of over 20 talentedstudents that combines singing,dancing, and elaborate costumesin a highly theatrical perform-ance of Broadway musicalselections.

The group was selected fromamong more than 100 schoolsthat provided audition tapes tothe conference judges. They were one of only three schoolsselected, and according to their letter of acceptance, theycompletely “wowed” the judges.

“Just being able to bring our hard work to this level ofexcellence is exhilarating for all of us,” said DirectorAnita Dowd. “It’s a reward in itself.”

The Show Choir performs at regular competitions andwon last year’s Grand Championship at the NationalCompetition in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They havealso performed at New York’s Lincoln Center and atCarnegie Hall.

The group won the audition with a tape of perform-ances from the Musical CATS. At the National Conferencethey will be performing works from The Lion King. �

El grupo fue escogido entremás de 100 escuelas queproveyeron cintas con audici-ones a los jueces de la confer-encia. Ellos fueron una desolamente tres escuelas quefueron escogidas, y según sucarta de aceptación, ellosimpresionaron a los juecescompletamente.

“Solamente poder traernuestro duro trabajo a este nivelde excelencia es de gran regocijopara todos nosotros,” dijo laDirectora Anita Dowd. “Es unarecompensa por si propia.”

El Coro se presenta encompetencias regulares y ganó el año pasado laCompetencia Nacional del Gran Campeonato en MyrtleBeach, South Carolina. También, se han presentado en elCentro Lincoln de New York y en el Carnegie Hall.

El grupo ganó la audición con una actuación por cintadel musical CATS. En la Conferecia Nacional estaránpresentando obras del The Lion King. �

Chinese Delegation Visits McGinnis

IIn November, McGinnis School, Perth Amboy HighSchool, and theDistrictAdministrativeHeadquarters werevisited by adelegation fromChina.

Dr. Searson ofKean Universitybrought the group toPerth Amboy as partof a cross-culturalteacher trainingexperience duringtheir two-week visitto the US. TheChinese middleschool educators andadministratorswanted to see how anurban districtoperates.

Upon arrival, theywere welcomed by theMcGinnis School Band,and then visited a varietyof classrooms. They werevery interested in ProjectBased Learning Activities,and the use of technologyat the McGinnis School.

The delegation metwith some of the students,teachers, and admini-strators in the MediaCenter for some dialogueabout education beforeproceeding to theAdministrative Head-quarters to learn aboutcentral administrationactivities.

Lunch was served at Fu Lin’s restaurant onSmith Street, and then the afternoon was spent at Perth Amboy High School,where they visited more classrooms and observed theuse of iPods in the classroom. �

TThis year marked the commence-ment of James J. Flynn’s VocabularyWord Wizard Kickoff Extravaganza.As many of the teachers, students,and school staff walked the halls,they were pleasantly surprised to seeriveting bulletin boards that illu-strated how capably students havebeen mastering a brilliantvocabulary.

“It is magnificent to see and hearour children using terms that arequite extraordinary,” said teacherVirginia Morales. “They love feelingas if they could conquer the world,and they can!”

Flynn teachers are indeed intro-ducing a “magical world of words.”

Recently, Miss Morales’ “Wizardsin the Making” traveled along thehalls going into many of the class-rooms. Each student marched downthe hallways with pride wearing anew vocabulary word around theirneck.

“A great sense of pride seemed tojust pour out of them as they toldstaff and students about the vocabu-lary word they wore,” said MissMorales. “They were all sodelighted to be able to define anduse their ‘wizard’ word in asentence.”

As eloquently stated on Mrs.Malloy’s bulletin board, “We’re off tosee the wizard ... the wonderfulwizard of words!” �

Lenape Indian Assembly

TThis fall, R.N. Wilentz Schoolstudents enjoyed a visit from LenapeIndian Kevin Two Steps, whopresented a wonderful program onthe history and life of the LenapeIndian Tribe.

Kevin Two Steps brought beauti-ful clothing, blankets, jewelry, toolsand other artifacts that the tribemakes. He told many exciting storiesabout his own life and that of hisfellow natives.

The students were able to join himin some games that the Indianchildren loved to play, and they wereable to get up close to all thefascinating artifacts he brought.

All in all, it made for a veryinteractive and entertaining assembly. �

Administrators, staff and students enjoyed “Crazy Socks Day” at the Dr. Herbert N. Richardson 21st CenturySchool. Though it was a fourth grade fundraiser, connections were still made in literacy and math by writingabout how much everyone enjoyed seeking each other’s “crazy socks” and graphing and plotting information formath connections. It was truly a fun-filled day and learning experience for everyone involved. � Administradores,personal y estudiantes disfrutaron del “Día de Medias Locas” en la Escuela del Siglo 21 Dr. Herbert N.Richardson. FFun is in the forecast this winter,and it all began with a railroad trip toToyland! Each student had theopportunity to be the conductor oftheir own train as they rode toToyland. Once they arrived, studentswere photographed at the ToylandStation for their families to have avery special keepsake.

There was also a blizzard ofactivity as students and staff preparedfor the BLIZZARD OF FUN BookFair. Family Literacy Night providedfamilies a chance to shop at the bookfair in the evening, while enjoyingstorytelling, games and a visit withClifford, the Big Red Dog!

Then there was GingerbreadAdventure Day with musicalentertainment for a family dance, andyummy snacks from the GingerbreadBoy.

The flurry of activity will continuein 2008! During January andFebruary the school’s NutritionProject will be up and running. TheNutrition Project is a collaboration ofthe NJ State Department ofAgriculture and Rutgers University,and consists of eight classroom visitsfrom a nutrition specialist. Thechildren will enjoy activities such asblending smoothies and making fruitsalads. Through this initiative,children are learning about makinghealthy food choices for themselves,as well as learning to try new foodsand tastes.

In January, Winnie the Pooh andfriends also visited in celebration ofWinnie’s birthday. Character visitsand storytelling truly made this a dayto remember.

This year’s Annual Moonlight Ballfeatured a 1950’s Sock Hop theme,with the DJ spinning plenty of“golden oldies.”

And finally, love is in the air forFebruary as the school hosts aSweethearts’ Dance. �

However, Shull Vice Principal Dr.Alfred Cresci is out to change historyso to speak.

The Magnificent Seven MathSeminar is the name he’s given to thegroup of students who meet in hisoffice for a bit of individualizedsmall group instruction. The studentsgather during regular class time for alittle individual attention as needed.

“It’s just that small extra push agood student often needs to get oversome troublesome material,” said Dr.Cresci. “They like it. It changes theenvironment and allows for an easierconnection to the material.”

Dr. Cresci, a former math teacher,likes transforming his office into aclassroom.

“Once a teacher, always a teach-er,” he said. “It’s also a pleasure to

welcome students into my office whoare here by choice, and not becausethey’ve done something wrong.” �

“Inferring Through the Arts”

TTeachers, like students, never stop learning. Anthony V.Ceres teachers are certainly no exception. Recentlyteachers were offered “Inferring Through the Arts,” aunique workshop created by Ceres Reading SpecialistLeanne Cosentino.

“My idea was to introduce participant teachers tomulti-sensory approaches to instruct students in inferen-tial thinking skills,” she said. “A motivating way to do thisis through the use of the arts in all the content areas.”

The workshop was designed to demonstrate how thearts can open new doors to help students learn complexstrategies necessary to comprehend text. The compellingtechnique is meant to help students understand theconcept of inferring through multi-media strategies, andbetter enable them to transfer this strategy to text.

Workshop facilitators guided teachers in interactive,student-centered learning activities useful for classroomapplication.

For example, teachers learned how to introduce“feeling words” to K-1 students using a “Color Collage.”They also learned techniques for using music to generateinferential thinking. In addition, the popular Harry Potterseries also became a teaching tool, with teachers makinguse of the beloved characters of Hogwarts to infermeanings of content area terms.

“The model presented in this workshop is a sample ofmotivational lessons we can use to help our students learnand achieve higher levels of success,” said Mrs. Cosentino.“Integrating the arts into our lessons can help us to better

reach all learners and meet their diversified needs.”Workshop participants also received a packet of sample

lesson plans and resources for classroom use. All lessonplans could be modified to match individual standards forall grade levels. Additional resources and read aloud textswere also available in various classrooms. �

EEach year in November, schoolsacross America celebrate AmericanEducation Week. Each year, EdwardJ. Patten School’s Home-SchoolRelations Committee plans severalevents that allow parents to partici-pate in a variety of activities duringthat week. Education in Action wasthe theme for this year’s activities.

An open invitation was presentedfor parents to not only attend themeeting of the Home-SchoolRelations Committee, but toencourage more parental partici-pation at the planning and advocacylevel. Parents were also invited to themeeting of the school’s NutritionCommittee to join other parent andstaff committee members to discussschool and family nutrition issues.

During the school’s celebration ofthe “Day of the Young Reader” in theParent Library / Literacy Center,parents were given gift bags withvarious prizes, small gifts, readingincentives and books to share withtheir children. In addition, parentswere able to view the educationprocess as “silent observers” duringclassroom instruction, or participatein classroom projects as part of theweek’s activities.

The highlight of the week was theParent-Student Luncheon, whereover 200 parents had the opportunityto have the school lunch with theirchild and watch their recessactivities.

Two workshops were also pre-sented during the week. There was aworkshop for parents on languagedevelopment, outlining strategies andtechniques for helping children buildvocabulary, and a family workshop,New Horizons in Science, wherefamilies worked together on scienceprojects and experiments.

The week’s activities ended withthe Saturday Morning Family School’sannual Thanksgiving Luncheon,

which was a covered dish eventattended by over 250 of the pro-gram’s participants and staff members.

This year nearly 500 parents,guardians and adult family membersattended Edward J. Patten School’sAmerican Education Week activities.It was indeed a great success. �

CCada año en noviembre, lasescuelas a través de America cele-bran la Semana de la EducaciónAmericana. Dos talleres de trabajo tambiénfueron presentados durante esasemana. Hubo un taller de trabajopara los padres sobre el desarrollodel lenguaje, delinear estrategias ytécnicas para ayudar a los niños aaumentar su vocabulario, y un tallerde trabajo para la familia, NuevosHorizontes en la Ciencias, donde lasfamilias trabajaron juntas enproyectos de ciencias yexperimentos.

FFollowing up on the Richardson School’s school theme,All Kinds of Friends, students celebrated a ThanksgivingFeast together. The children shared foods from differentcultures as well as traditions, customs and various waysthat families celebrateand give thanks.

The theme ofRichardson School’sannual Peace Rallythis year wasFriendship. As part ofthe celebration,students created theirown individual USS“Friendships” todemonstrate how eachclassroom is unique.Students designedtheir own “portholes”which were thenplaced on the ships atthe school’s PeaceRally.

The “Fleetof USS Dr.H.N. Rich-ardsonFriendships”consisted offive “Friend-ships.” Eachporthole onthe individualships repre-sented aclassroom inour school onevery gradelevel.

Students also decorateda letter, which made up the banner “All Aboard the USSDr. H.N. Richardson Friendships.”

“Every student was ‘on board’ to join together asfriends for our peace rally,” said Principal Helen Horan.

The culminating activity was an assembly duringwhich each student became a participant in the rally itself, with special performances, poems and songs. �

SSpecially trained, uniformed lawenforcement officers enter the WilliamC. McGinnis and Shull Schools togive students the skills that they needto avoid gang pressure and youthviolence. The G.R.E.A.T (GangResistance Education and Training)Program continues to improve, now inits third year.

“This is my first year at McGinnis,and I have already noticed thatstudents have shown an increasedinterest in school,” said Ana MariaMascenik, McGinnis School Principal.“It has had and continues to have asignificant impact.”

“The G.R.E.A.T program inspiresstudents to become positive rolemodels,” said Lorraine Morgan, ShullSchool Principal. “ It also enhancestheir ability to avoid negative peerinfluences, while exhibiting leadershipand respect for their schoolenvironment.”

Under the instruction of officersfrom the Perth Amboy PoliceDepartment, 7th grade students at bothmiddle schools are presented with askills-based curriculum designed toproduce knowledge and attitudinal andbehavioral changes through the use offacilitative teaching, positive behaviorrehearsal, cooperative and interactivelearning techniques, and extendedteacher activities. The curriculum hasintegrated National Learning EnglishLanguage Arts Standards and NationalHealth Standards and is based oneffective research practices.

“Children also have the opportunityto look beyond the badge and see thatwe are a human being just likeeveryone else,” said Officer Lisa Capo,G.R.E.A.T. instructor at the ShullSchool. “Interacting with kids is greatbecause they are our future.”

At the end of January approxi-mately 375 McGinnis and 310 ShullSchool students graduated from theG.R.E.A.T. program. Before anattentive audience they performedvarious skits, recited poems and sang

songs to illustrate all that they havelearned. �

Lunch and Learn

LLearning never tasted sogood.

At least that’s the way itmust seem to someambitious Shull students.The students are takingadvantage of their school’sLunch and Learn Program.Students spend part of theirlunch period getting thatlittle extra boost a student often needs to master new or more challenging classroom material. Of course, they eat as they learn.

Teacher Andrew Kmiecthinks it’s a great idea.

“Traditionally lunchperiod is when a studentunwinds and relaxes,” hesaid. “We haven’t alteredthat one bit. We’representing a low key,informal environment where relaxing and learning work extremelywell together. I get the ideathey enjoy it as much as I do.” �
