The heater on the left-hand side of the church has broken down, and will be replaced within the next
fortnight. The heater on the right-hand side of the church is still
working. I'm sure that the people who might normally sit on the right
-hand side of the church would warmly welcome people who
might normally sit on the left-hand side, if they are feeling cold!
Perhaps this is a good opportunity for moving around?!
Please join us for morning tea in the hall
after the service.

Philemon
The letter of Paul to Philemon – and the church that meets at Philemon’s house – is a remarkable pastoral letter, wonderfully preserved for us in the Bible. Philemon was a Christian, apparently having been converted by Paul’s own ministry. He had a slave, Onesimus, who had run away and turned up in the place where Paul was being kept in detention. In the ministry of Paul and Timothy, Onesimus was converted too, and proved helpful to Paul in his imprisonment – living up to his name, which means “useful”. (By the way, I think it’s pronounced “o-ne-si-mus”)
In this letter, Paul is sending Onesimus back to Philemon, asking that he be received back “not just as a slave… but as a dear brother in Christ”. And so for us begin a number of questions. Was Onesimus still going to be a slave, albeit well treated? Or was he hinting at Onesimus being granted freedom? Do we expect that Paul might have challenged the entire institution of slavery here? How might Philemon have interpreted Paul’s words? How might Philemon have responded? How did Onesimus feel about this?
We only get half of the conversation here, but perhaps that is a good thing – it puts the questions back onto us! Here are just three to think about:
1. Does is make a difference to us if those who serve us (in various ways) are Christian sisters or brothers?
2. Is there something to learn from Paul’s surprising approach, which focussed less on the injustice of slavery and more on the personal appeal of the Christian person in front of him?
3. How might we react if we were involved in that situation?
God’s peace, David
