Sheep and goats Proverbs 19:17 says “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and
will be repaid in full.”
In today’s passage we hear that even more strongly. The parable of the
sheep and the goats is a part of Jesus’ teaching on the Mount of Olives,
in which he looks beyond the destruction of Jerusalem, beyond the “wars
and rumours of wars”, ahead to the time when God makes all the world
new in resurrection life.
At that time, Jesus is seen in several perspectives. He is the Son of Man
who has suffered and been crucified. He is present in the “poor and
needy”, with whom he identifies himself. He is also the one who renders
judgement among the people and nations, and who like a shepherd
safely separates the sheep from the goats.
This passage invites us to reflect on how we treat Jesus’ brothers and
sisters in the poor and needy.
As it happens, today we are drawing attention to the ministry of
Operation Larder, through which the church has been providing food
and personal items to people in need in the Frankston community.
Today’s morning tea will be a fundraiser for Larder. There are also
donation envelopes available. As was reported at the recent AGM, about
half of the money raised by Larder is from grants and half from
donations.
Through this and other projects like the Brekky Club, the Wednesday
lunch, Voices of Frankston, and in many other ways as individuals we
participate in the life and priorities of God.
God’s peace,
David
