In the midst of a fragile world that totters on the edge of brokenness, there is a deep desire for belonging, communi-ty, participation and wholeness. What drives this desire for the whole? By looking through the lens of modern science and the vision of Teilhard de Chardin, Sr. Ilia will explore the relationship between evolution and religion with a fo-cus on the unfinished nature of human life, the emergence of Christ and transhumanism as the next level of evolution.

Jackie Welsh, Corresponding Secretary 277-1968,
scHolArsHiP luncHeon februAry 25, 2017 SMC President Janice Cervel-li received a warm welcome from LND/SMC at the luncheon hon-oring its 2016-17 scholarship recipients and their mothers on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at Rice C o m m o n s ,
Saint Mary’s College. The atmosphere was some-what electric with subdued anticipation from the 54 attendees of what Pres. Cervelli would say. She related, “It is great to be home!” A graduate of Holy Cross Grade School and Saint Joseph High School, Pres. Cervelli related that being at SMC she is reconnecting her family life and faith, with her academic and professional life. Now nine months into her presidency, she spoke with confidence concerning the women students at SMC. She cited some areas of their personal lives where the College could help them more than it has in the past. She recognized the high level of anxiety that students bring to their col-lege lives, much of which is fueled through social media. She would like for freshmen students to spend some time at SMC in the summer prior to their enrollment with hopes of lowering this anx-iety. In addition President Cervelli is joining with
Br. John Paige, csc, and Fr. John Jenkins, csc, presi-dents of Holy Cross College and the University of Notre Dame, in an effort to reduce the incidence of sexual assault on the three campuses. In addition she presented many ideas of where the College could further enhance, not only its undergraduate students academically but also the local community, with a listing of potential post-graduate degrees in nursing, psychology,
gerontology, occupa-tional and physical therapy, environmen-tal sciences and sus-tainability farming. Pres. Cervelli holds that SMC, which has a strong liber-al arts education for their undergraduate women and a Cath-olic identity, can give
power to women in educating both their hearts and minds. She cited Sr. Madeleva, csc, a former President as a model. In the past decade, SMC has expanded its out-reach to under-represented young women. To-day, 20% of its student body of 1600+ students is from under-represented groups. Pres. Cervelli stated that women educated at women’s colleges graduated at a greater rate than at mixed gender colleges, have a higher rate of income, graduate with less debt, receive more assistance in their ed-ucation and are more philanthropic in the course of their lives.
LND/SMC President JoAnn MacKenzie introduced the schol-arship recipients from the col-lege, junior, Madison Gonzales, and the university, senior Erin Foldesi. Each of the recipients spoke to the audience about their studies as well as their activities.

Erin Foldesi, UND ‘18 & Elizabeth Foldesi
Erin Foldesi is a 2013 graduate of Marian High School. During her time at Notre Dame she has been involved with the McGlinn Hall Council, a member of the IDSA (Industrial Design Society of America) student chapter, and has been a student assistant at the Kaneb Center for Teaching and Learning, the lat-ter for all four years. Last spring 2016, she had the opportunity to study in Athens, Greece. In fall 2016, she was in a collaborative design class where they en-tered the Disney Imagineering Competition. Her team placed as a semi-finalist. Presently a senior Industrial Design major she is working towards a B.F.A. degree. This requires the completion of a thesis project, which will be dis-played in the Snite Museum of Art in the spring. Her thesis is re-designing the SCBA, (the air tank which is carried by firefighters on their backs) to be better suited for female firefighters. After graduation, She hopes to work in the Midwest as an Industrial De-signer.
Madison Gonzales is a 2014 graduate of Saint Joseph High School. She is a junior SMC psychology major with minors in so-ciology and Intercultural Studies. Her mi-nor reflects her belief that women have an equal voice , especially those women who are abused and/or marginalized. Madison choose to study abroad in South Africa during her sophomore year because it is infrequent that SMC students go there. She loved it. Presently, she works in the CWIL (Center for Women’s Intercultural Leadership) office at SMC as the peer ad-visor of the South Africa Program of stud-ies. In the future she plans on going to grad school to pursue studies in Social Psycholo-gy. She hopes to do something with cultures and psychology.

Ellen also taught at McKinley, Marquette and Madison Schools. The couple en-tertained many Notre Dame benefactors at formal events as well as more informal home gatherings. Dorothy R. LeaderMarch 5, 1923 - March 2, 2017
✙ Dorothy Riehl was born on a farm near Raleigh, North Dakota, to German emigrants from Western Russia. One of seven children, she learned English in a one-room schoolhouse. At age seventeen, she left home to attend nursing school in Bismarck, ND. During World War II Dorothy enlisted in the Navy Nursing Corps, serving in several Navy hospitals before being discharged as a Lieutenant (j.g.) in 1946. Dorothy then earned a B.S. in public health nursing at New York University. In 1949 Dorothy married Robert Leader, a man she cared for in earlier years as he recovered from wounds suffered on Iwo Jima during World War II. Robert and Dorothy moved to South Bend, IN, where he was a Pro-fessor of Art at the University of Notre Dame. Meanwhile, Dorothy continued her advanced stud-ies, earning an M.S. from the University of Illinois then, in 1970, a Ph.D. in gerontology from the University of Michigan. After raising five children, Dorothy resumed her pro-fessional life. First she was deputy director of the Visiting Nurses Assn. of St. Joseph County, IN. Then she became director of the nursing program at Lake Michigan Col-lege, Benton Harbor, MI. Dorothy was promoted to Dean of Health Sciences at Lake Michigan College, a post she held until retiring in 1986. Dorothy also remained involved in volunteer activi-ties at Notre Dame and in the South Bend community. She served as President of the Ladies of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s College during 1963-64. She also taught English as a second language and, because of her strong faith and her dedication to the Brothers of the Holy Cross, funded the Leader Legacy of Faith Center at Holy Cross College. Dorothy is survived by children Charles (Becky), Eliz-abeth (David Hill), Damian (Joan), Andrew and Christo-pher (Linda), as well as by nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her beloved husband Robert died in 2006. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Dorothy on March 6, 2017, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
