Editor’s Column

The year has flown by so fast! It feels like just yesterday that I was writing my first Editorial for Clean Middle East, and I am already on my seventh! To top it, we are so much closer to the Middle East Cleaning Technology Week (MECTW) – just 50 days to go! We are geared up for the Mega Cleaning Event of the Year! Are you?

The magazine has a beautiful spread previewing what you can see at MECTW – some of our key exhibitors have mentioned the various products that they plan to showcase and launch at the show. Do go through them to know which stand you would like to visit and why. We have also included the registration forms for our conferences towards the end of the magazine. You can sign up for some extremely interesting insights on the Cleaning & Hygiene, Laundry & Dry Cleaning, Car Wash & Car Care industries in the Middle East!

Apart from this, this issue is all about hygiene. Our cover story speaks about ‘Smart’ washroom hygiene – where leading professional companies from the industry in the UAE present their take on what is ‘smart’ and what isn’t. Our feature is on hand hygiene – a crucial topic that must be addressed in today’s times! With the increase in the reports of cases of MERS-CoV in the Middle East, hand hygiene practices must be focused on more keenly, and that is pretty much the conclusion of the article.

We also speak with Vishal Sharma, the new Senior Vice President MEA at Ecolab. He presents some extremely interesting insights on the cleaning and hygiene market globally in our interview. Finally, we have a very interesting article by a renowed housekeeping manager, Pamini Hemaprabha, Executive Houskeeper and Rooms Specialist, Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates, who addresses the issue of third-hand smoke in hotels and how hotels must learn to cope with it.

The next issue of Clean Middle East is the show issue and we have lots more to offer beyond the usual articles. Till then, do let me know your feedback on this issue and anything specific you would like to see in the show issue.

QRC launches WASH in Kurdistan Beach cleaning at Salalah Rotana Qatar Red Crescent (QRC), in partnership with UNICEF, has launched a project to help Iraqi internally displaced persons (IDP) who fled the recent violence in different parts of the country to Iraqi Kurdistan.

The joint initiative aims to ensure all water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) standards are met in a new permanent IDP camp to be built in Ashti in Sulaymaniyah Governorate. Over one year, the partners will establish water and sanitation facilities in the

camp for some 1,038 most-affected families, including 40 per cent children, 52 per cent female and 48 per cent male. The project budget is $1,515,494-$599,648 to be contributed by QRC and $915,846 by UNICEF.

A WASH provision plan was developed for the permanent IDP site, with the directorates of water and sewerage and UNHCR to ensure safe water, gender-appropriate toilets, improved hygiene and sanitation services, and reduced diseases.

As part of its CSR initiative and to boost team building, Salalah Rotana Resort set a day aside for a ‘Beach Cleaning Drive’ where colleagues were invited for a day to clean its private beach by picking up any visible waste material. The resort utilised the services of its employees for cleaning the beach, which houses the waterfront resort with an 11,000-sq. m. private beach. The activity brought together 40 colleagues from different departments who together collected 112 kg waste in 28 bags.

Hossam Kamal, General Manager of Salalah Rotana Resort, said, “CSR is of paramount importance to us as our daily activities have a great impact on our environment.”

“The beach cleaning drive depicts our commitment towards providing a safe and clean beach to our guests and also reinforcing the Rotana corporate sustainability initiative, Rotana Earth, which addresses environmental, economic and social issues.”

Infection control in KSARegular washing of hands is the best preventive measure against infectious diseases during Haj, but pilgrims claim the lack of washrooms in Mecca makes this difficult. Hence, the use of hand sanitisers is essential. “Carrying small hand sanitisers can help, but washing your hands is the best preventive measure,” said Dr. Fatma Al Attar, Head of International Health Regulation at the Ministry of Health, UAE. “People from different backgrounds and levels of education gather for Haj, and we try to educate people at each stage,” she said. “In the UAE, we give the pilgrims pamphlets and brochures on preventive measures even as they are departing at the airport. We advise them, but not everyone takes our advice or follows our recommendations.”

“When hands are not visibly dirty, a hand rub can be used,” said Rana Sidani, Senior Communication Officer at the World Health Organisation regional office. WHO is coordinating with the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia to make sure that health and welfare of pilgrims will take priority. WHO stressed on the importance of hand hygiene as a preventive measure against the spread of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS. Saudi Arabia expected between two and three million pilgrims for Haj this year. However, pilgrims have mentioned that there are proper no hygiene facilities or waste managemet. The UAE Haj authority makes additional efforts to ensure good standards for Emiratis.

Report: Spread of MERSThe number of MERS-CoV cases in Riyadh’s outbreak climbed by 10 earlier last month as Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health (MOH) made its first statement about a hospital-linked outbreak, which said the facility’s emergency department has been closed to curb the spread of the virus. The MOH has now confirmed 69 MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory coronavirus) cases in Riyadh last month. Looking at another aspect of the MERS threat, the agency also said sacrifices involving camels—thought to be a reservoir for the virus—will be prohibited in connection with Haj religious rituals later this year. These cases boost the country’s overall total from MERS-CoV to 1,128 infections, 485 fatal. So far 592 people have recovered.

Health Minister Khalid Al Falih held a press conference, at which he said more cases are likely to be reported and that the virus could spread to other facilities. MOH advised the public not to worry and added that school closures and activity bans aren’t warranted. It added that people should follow basic hygiene procedures and observe precautions when visiting hospitals.

In other MERS-related news, The Kingdom of Jordan also reported two imported MERS cases late last month. The patient had a history of having travelled to Saudi Arabia.

Record water and energy savings for eco-conscious Mövenpick Hotels & ResortsA company-wide commitment to adopting environmentally friendly practices saw Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts cut energy and water consumption by record levels across its Middle East portfolio in 2014. A range of innovative hotel-led initiatives - many pioneered by general managers and staff members - led to energy and water reductions of 7.8 per cent and 6.3 per cent, respectively in 2014, compared to 2013.

The company’s Middle East hotels saved 271,000 hours of energy over the course of the year, which

is the equivalent of one 75-watt incandescent light bulb running constantly for 31 years. They also saved enough water to fill 46 Olympic-sized swimming pools or 105 million 1.5-litre bottles of water. Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is the most Green Globe certified hotel

company in the world and all of its green initiatives fall under the company’s global sustainability programme called ‘Shine’, which concentrates on three areas - Environment, Employer and Social Sustainability - with a focus on Education.

These initiatives have paid dividends with the group’s Middle East hotels introducing a range of environmentally friendly practices from ‘green’ meetings packages with naturally-lit rooms, paperless solutions and sustainable food choices at Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Lakes Towers

in Dubai, to energy- and water-saving strategies such as the use of LED lightbulbs, motion-sensor light timers and special water faucets at Mövenpick Hotel & Resort Al Bida’a Kuwait. Meanwhile, the Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Bur Dubai has introduced Green Wrap Technology, using a steel framework and filtration system that increases the reliability of the hotel’s air-coolers and even provides additional shading and protection against sandstorms. It’s a move that has reduced the electricity bill for these ‘chillers’ by a significant 16 per cent.

City Centre Mirdif attains LEED Gold EBOM certificationMajid Al Futtaim has set a new global benchmark in sustainable retail development and property management with the world’s largest shopping mall to achieve a prestigious sustainability rating.

The U.S. Green Building Council confirmed City Centre Mirdif in Dubai as the largest mall in the world to achieve the LEED Gold EBOM (Existing Buildings Operation and Maintenance) rating, which is located in one of the hottest places on earth. A commitment to enhancing people’s lives through sustainable real estate is at the heart of Majid Al Futtaim’s business strategy.

The company has set ambitious goals for 2018 to deliver results across three key areas – developing and managing high performance

assets that support prosperous communities and in doing so deliver pioneering standards across its business. The 3 mn. sq. ft. City Centre Mirdif encapsulates the very best example of this five-year Sustainability and Green Building Strategy, which has set the standard for developers not just in the UAE but across the Middle East region. Through its assets, Majid Al Futtaim continually develops and advances its understanding of sustainable development, using innovative techniques to reduce the impact on the planet and improve operational performance and efficiencies.

The initiative at City Centre Mirdif required co-operation from more than 500 retailers in the mall including Carrefour and leisure and entertainment brands VOX Cinemas,

Little Explorers and Magic Planet. The mall operations team, retailers, and brands supported efforts by achieving targets across 110 category areas including alternative transport, water efficiency, waste management, green cleaning policies and efficient energy management.

Working in partnership with Enova by Veolia, a Majid Al Futtaim facilities and energy management provider, the success at City Centre Mirdif will serve as a catalyst to increase the adoption of sustainable building practices across the MENA region.

Buildings that were previously ineligible to be considered for LEED certification can now target ratings, following the combined efforts of Majid Al Futtaim and the U.S. Green Building Council.

Qatar Red Crescent provides health education and hygiene kits to 1,000 expatriatesQatar Red Crescent (QRC) has continued to implement the first phase of its National Communicable Disease Prevention Campaign (Weqaya), funded and sponsored by the Supreme Council of Health (SCH). During the Eid season, a QRC medical affairs team organised a health education and psychological support festival for the visitors of the workers’ health centres, managed and operated by QRC with funding from and under the SCH supervision.

The event involved training sessions about personal hygiene and infection prevention for a total of 1,000 expatriates visiting the workers’ health centres. The target workers received useful information about applying health and personal hygiene standards, common communicable diseases and how to avoid them and medical advice about health protection against workplace risks, such as sun strokes and heat exhaustion and how to administer first aid to their colleagues who happen to suffer any such emergencies.

The lecture was delivered in different languages to ensure full understanding of the information. Following the lecture, the workers received 1,000 hygiene kits that included tooth brushes, soap and other

personal hygiene items. Co-launched in August 2013 by QRC and SCH, the three-year Weqaya campaign is intended mainly to improve health and safety conditions among expatriate workers through educational lectures, awareness fliers and personal hygiene kits.

Moreover, the campaign distributed 5,000 hygiene kits with training in how to use them and 10,000 brochures and fliers on the most prevalent infections and health problems, suchas Coronavirus, Ebola virus, influenza, tuberculosis and heat exhaustion.

Dubai real-estate sector sales exceed the mark of AED 129 billion The Dubai real-estate sector achieved an average annual rise of 2.5 per cent in the first half of 2015. Ismail Al Hammadi, Founder and CEO of Al Ruwad Real Estate Consultants, drew attention that the real-estate sector in Dubai showed notable success much against the number of international studies, which predicted that the real-estate sector will see a downfall of 20 per cent in the beginning of the year.

Hammadi stressed that the volume of real estate sales exceeded by 129 billion dirhams during the

first six months of this year (According to the Land and Property Department in Dubai), compared to 57.6 billion dirhams during the same period last year, and that about 20,000 investors belonging to 142 different nationalities pumped nearly 53 billion dirhams from January until June (6 months).

In general, there were concerns as a result of the repercussions of the aggressive global and economic changes, like globally accelerating oil prices and its impact on the state as one of the top oil producers in the world.

Imdaad announces strategic plans for the GCC’s robust FM industryImdaad has revealed its strategic growth plans that will complement the region’s bustling FM sector. It has announced that growing awareness amongst consumers about the benefits of FM along with governments’ interest in sustainable initiatives have accelerated the global FM sector.

The realisation that management and maintenance – including for energy – accounts for up to 80 per cent of total building cost while development takes up just 20 per cent has been

the major driver for the sector’s unprecedented growth.

Jamal Lootah, CEO, Imdaad, finds that the world has finally realised the true potential of the FM industry in creating an optimal, safe, healthy and ‘green’ environment, which benefits occupants and facility owners alike.

A proper implementation of FM plans can result in increasing a building’s lifecycle and performance, reducing operational cost, increasing revenue, and saving considerable time and efforts. While Europe

Rising energy consumption calls for a more sustainable and integrated strategy in the UAE The UAE’s gross domestic electricity consumption has more than doubled over the past 10 years, and is expected to grow even more rapidly over the next five years as the country undergoes substantial population and economic growth, according to a study by management consultancy Strategy&, formerly Booz & Company.

The study reveals that energy usage in the UAE has grown at an annual average of 4 per cent over the past six years, and is projected to increase to 5 per cent through 2020.

A recent forum organised by the Energy Working Group of the UAE-UK Business Council and facilitated by Strategy&, highlighted three key aspects of energy efficiency, which comprise smart cities, building efficiency and water usage. Although

numerous initiatives have already been launched in the UAE, implementing additional comprehensive measures and policies can help reap the full benefits of an improved energy efficiency strategy, as challenges cannot be overcome in isolation.

and the US are mature FM markets, the concept is still in the nascent stages in the GCC. However, the outlook for the region’s FM industry is bullish due to the regional governments’ emphasis on ‘smart’ and sustainable solutions; growth in construction of high-rises and vast mixed-used developments, all of which require specialised FM services; and the growing consumer awareness.

Imdaad is looking to play a major role in the growth of the region’s FM industry by introducing breakthrough technologies and innovative concepts such as Material Recovery Facility and Polished Water Plant.

Transguard uses robotic cleaners for the first time at Dubai Festival City

3M’s Commercial So-lutions team recently launched the Cleaning Institute – a one-of-a-kind workshop that provides in-depth knowledge about the needs, technologies, and new innovations in smart cleaning and work-place safety. The work-shop, which has been or-ganized by 3M across the world since a while now, was successful conducted by Pedro J. Recio, Global Business Manager Clean-ing and Workplace Safety. Recio has been conduct-ing such workshops since November 2014.

He says, “We are cur-rently developing this programme to change traditional seminars into events that are more focused on bringing in-

novation to the cleaning market. Our focus is on three major factors – total cost of ownership, safety and liability and environment friendliness.” He adds that the pur-pose is to try to focus on bringing to the market an event that allows the top decision makers in each country to be exposed to

the innovations on offer. These people are invited to review how 3M ad-dresses cleaning. Thus, this is different from a traditional seminar. “We share our innovations and help understanding how they can help drive the change in cleaning. The people we invite make decisions about whether it is time to change some-thing about cleaning,” says Recio. Recio has been conduct-ing workshops across the globe. After Dubai, he had planned to visit Kuwait, Qatar, Riyadh and India. He adds, “It is not easy to change cleaning when there is a cost attached to it and when there is resistance to change. Cul-tural change is hard and

requires a lot of effort and acceptance and has to be supported by savings. Hence, it is important that we have decision makers attend these workshops.”

The response to the workshops globally has been quite positive. The next year will see a more aggressive approach in terms of the workshops. Several people have al-ready been trained enough to go across the globe to conduct the workshop.

The impact of the Clean-ing Institute has been ef-fective. Several countries where the workshop has been held are seeing great results – faster adoption of products, increased satisfaction and closer interaction with 3M.

Dubai-headquartered Transguard Group, in con-junction with US-based multinational company Sealed Air, are currently trialing cleaning robots at Dubai Festival City Mall, in what is widely consid-ered as a first for the UAE and the wider region. As a part of Sealed Air, there are three different types of cleaning robots in the Diversey Care products range, called ‘Intellibots’. Each machine is designed for a particular type of floor and environment - the robot on trial at Dubai Festival City Mall is the Hands-Free Cleaning Hy-droBot Scrubber, which is specifically intended for

hard floors and is ideal for retail environments, such as indoor shopping malls. “The versatile HydroBot allows the operator to switch between manual cleaning and Hands-Free Cleaning. So, at the push of a button, the operator can walk away to clean in other areas while the floor is being cleaned and the quality of cleaning is also consistent. The Hands-Free Cleaning operating system incorporates up to 19 sensors, giving the robot a 360-degree view of its surroundings, and allowing it to oper-ate and clean on its own. Advanced navigation and sensors detect obstacles

as well as people - stop-ping to let them pass before proceeding - and stairs, to prevent unwant-ed spills.

The HydroBot also comes equipped with Eco Save, which is an advanced

four-stage purification system that can filter wa-ter to one micron, provid-ing clean, reusable water and eliminating up to 85 per cent of its wastewater and chemicals, which sig-nificantly lowers its impact on the environment.

Hand hygiene and flu shots should be mandatory for healthcare workersIn the US, leading patient safety advocates have suggested that clinicians must no longer refuse to follow best practices for hand hygiene and influenza vaccinations in a Health Affairs blog post. Although there may be exceptions in the case of emergencies, healthcare organisations must demand 100 per cent adherence to ‘must-do’ practices, wrote Robert Wachter, M.D., Professor and Associate chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Hand hygiene and influenza vaccinations

for healthcare workers address significant safety problems and substantial literature has shown that widespread adherence to these two practices are associated with major reductions in harm. Universal compliance is feasible; indeed, compliance rates close to 100 percent have already been achieved in some institutions though such rates are far from typical.

Although proper hand hygiene is considered the most important measure to prevent the spread of infections; nearly one in four hospitals

fail to fully comply with recommended guidelines, it was found earlier. Wachter further wrote that to obtain full compliance with these practices,

healthcare leaders must hold clinicians accountable and set

up effective monitoring and disciplinary systems. Compliance expectations must be included in bylaws and contracts. Leaders must also be willing to fire

clinicians for deliberate and repetitive non-compliance, he wrote.

Industrial cleaner MSIS targets international expansion following acquisitionEarlier this June, private equity financier Primary Capital Partners paid £20million for a controlling stake in Inverurie- and Invergordon-based MSIS - an industrial cleaning firm that primarily focuses on the FPSO market. Ian McPherson – part of the management team that still holds 30 per cent of the business – is confident that the deal will not derail MSIS’ commitment to invest £1million in kit and a new facility at the Kirkwood Commercial Park in Inverurie, either. Rather,

it will put more money in the coffers to spur on the expansion drive. The acquisition will bring further investment to grow the business in terms of our products

and services, and the other aspect would be internationalising the business. International trade already makes up about 10 per cent of turnover at the firm,

whose attention is now focused on the Middle East, with support coming from Scottish Enterprise.

The company has identified the Middle East – Qatar specifically – and potentially West Africa as the areas where it needs to risk profile.

The company has also successfully completed a project for a major client in Qatar. Since then, it has registered and put an agreement in place with a local agent to develop the business further.

Smart’ in today’s world is fast being looked upon as a definition for high-tech products,

automation, and even intelligent solutions. The same holds true for the washroom. The past few years have seen the global washroom hygiene market grow multifold. And, with the rather alarming rate at which infectious diseases like Ebola, Bird Flu and – closer to home – MERS-CoV are cropping up, upping the ante of hygiene levels in public washrooms has become even more paramount.

“Public washrooms are areas prone to infections/transmission of bacteria, and hence, most of the public entities give utmost priority in ensuring cleanliness and hygiene in washrooms,” says John Colley, Chairman, Intercare Ltd.

He adds that over the years, many new products and innovations have been made available in the washroom, engineered to a high standard and designed for ease of use and reliability, and delivered with style. Today, the washroom is filled with gadgets that are intelligent, hygienic and offer user comfort. From dispensers, to hand care and even surface care – the

list is endless. Take for instance the use of auto-sanitisers that release disinfectants to control odours and sanitise urinals and toilet bowls with each flush. Or the automatic seat-cleaner, a hands-free step that gives users enhanced toilet-seat sanitation where the activated motion sensor automatically cleans, disinfects, and completely dries the toilet seat in 15 seconds, flat! Add to that waterless urinals, sensor-driven faucets and even intelligent air-fresheners, and we have a portfolio of washroom hygiene products that are designed to increase hygiene levels, user-friendliness and finally, the appearance of the washroom.

Smart Washroom Hygiene

Smart products are being used to avoid decreasing customers or dirty washrooms.

Appearances matterLooks can be deceptive – they say. But, washrooms can’t look good without actually being clean. According to Seifeddine Beldi, Key Accounts Manager MEA, Newell Rubbermaid Middle East, the image a customer forms of a facility is most often defined by the appearance of the washroom. “To ensure this,” he says, “one must take into consideration two major factors – ensure that there are no micro-organisms or infection and keep the space clean.” In a region like the Middle East and more specifically the UAE, malls and hotels, being the key drivers of the economy, require good-looking washrooms.

Some steps to consider washroom hygiene as Beldi suggests, include, surface care, where disinfectants, chemical cleaners, auto-sanitisers, etc. come in; hand care, which includes soap dispensers, paper dispensers; and air care, air fresheners, fragrances, deodorisers, etc.

Beldi adds, “For us at Rubbermaid, smart means Specific, Measureable, Achievable, Right Timing.” In other words, he refers to applicability. To ensure that the best solution is offered, it is important to identify the specific area, how long the solution will last, and how applicable it is in that situation. “For instance, take aerosols – which are known to dispense VOCs. VOCs or volatile organic compounds are known to be toxic – however, that is if one is exposed to them continuously and long-term. In a shopping mall or airport a customer would probably be exposed to VOCs for not more than a few minutes at a time. Obviously, one cannot use aerosols in healthcare settings, where patients are vulnerable.”

Hence, when it is a more reasonable option for an ideal application, it must be used to ensure that the space gets optimum performance, while meeting price demands. In fact, aerosol-based dispensers and refills represent 95 per cent or even more of the air-freshening industry across the world.

The UAE MarketAwareness and the rise in projects has given the market an awakening when it comes to washroom hygiene. According to Hydros Jassem, CEO, Fragrance Delivery Technologies Ltd., “Businesses and facilities managers are waking up to the fact that visitors, tenants and employees want a better environment, while solving odour problems. Each facility is designed to create a confident, caring and lasting positive impression.”

Beldi agrees, “Dubai is the international hub of the Middle East. The market has reached the prevention stage where the right products and technologies are used to avoid repercussions of decreasing customers or dirty washrooms.” Moreover, he adds that the institutionalisation of the industry through shows such as Clean Middle East Pulire and conferences, etc., leads the business towards regulations and standardisations.

Speaking on the air-freshening systems market, Jassem says, “The market has been characterised by minor development and innovation. With the UAE government’s green mandate, people are becoming more and more aware about environmental safety and responsibility and the on-going effectiveness of products. At least 90 per cent of air fresheners used in commercial or institutional premises are aerosols, pump spray or fan-driven gel systems, which are not environment friendly.

“Organisations are now looking for cleaner and greener products that are effective and solve the underlying problem,” he says.

Smart and eco-friendlyRubbermaid, too, boasts of washroom hygiene products that are green and eco-friendly in that they do not use natural resources like gas or power to run. Moreover, Jassem informs that only around 10 per cent of the air-freshening systems market uses sustainable technology, with Fragrance Delivery Technologies providing the patented Oxy-Gen Powered system – a more energy efficient and eco-friendly option. This fuel-cell technology, based on a medical grade innovation used in the pharmaceutical industry has revolutionised the field of fragrancing with its emission free and precise fluid delivery.

Another extremely interesting product in washroom hygiene is the hand dryer – a gadget that was first introduced as a mere box with a lever that had to be pressed to produce hot air that would intern dry the hands. But over time, and more recently, research has shown that the traditional hand dryer does more harm than good. Studies have proved that hand dryers tend to disperse any remaining micro-organisms into the air allowing for the spread of infectious diseases.

Toby Saville, Senior Performance Engineer and Microbiologist, Dyson UK, says, “Damp hands can spread up to 1,000 times more bacteria than dry hands – so, effective hand drying is important. Unlike paper towels the environmental impact of hand dryers occurs during use. But most hand dryers simply suck this air in, and blow it on to the customers’ hands.” This is probably why general hand dryers have been given a bad name for spreading infection.

However, at Dyson, engineers have come up with the Dyson Airblade technology that passes washroom air through a HEPA filter to remove 99.9 per cent bacteria. By investing in new technology and striving to do more with less, Dyson engineers have developed a machine, which not only works effectively and hygienically, but also has a low impact on the environment. They produce up to 71 per cent less CO2 than paper towels and are able to dry 18 pairs of hands for the price of a single paper towel.

It is probably the only hand dryer worldwide that has been approved globally by NSF, and HACCP International has accredited it for use in food preparation environments. Hence, the Dyson Airblade hand dryer has been proven to be as hygienic as paper towels, through research commissioned by Dyson and conducted by the University of Bradford (published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology), Institut de Recherche Microbiologique, the College of Medicine (University of Florida), and Campden BRI.

Technological intelligenceColley says, “Smart control and monitoring is the latest generation of electronically products for wash basins, WCs and urinals. Rather than merely receiving control instruction, the new products are also capable of providing data on frequency of use and times of use. This bi-directional flow of data simplifies the operation, service and maintenance of the washroom and reduces operation costs.”

Intercare is working with select accounts on high-traffic public areas for smart washrooms by using web connectivity and sensors in dispensers and bins, which give real-time information to a remote location with the number of users, checks for refill levels, move from static cleaning schedule to cleaning when needed.

The Dyson Airblade dryer also shows that ‘smart’ is also about technology. For instance, in this dryer, every second,

“With the UAE government’s green mandate, people are becoming more and more aware about environmental safety and responsibility and the on-going effectiveness of products.”

- Hydros Jassem, CEO, Fragrance Delivery Technologies Ltd.

Products are now designed to increase hygiene levels, user-friendliness and the washroom’s appearance.

Page 23: High-Tech Hygiene...model ISAL 6000 - On The Road one of its kind, tested in different market segments and well-suited to the UAE market segments. A “mechanical suction” Sweeper

the digital motor V4 draws in up to 35 litres of air through a HEPA filter, and forces it through apertures 0.8mm wide. The result is 430 mph sheets of filtered air that scrape water from hands, like a windscreen wiper – drying them quickly and hygienically in as little as ten seconds without the need for an energy intensive heating element. This makes it extremely quick to dry hands hygienically – 10 seconds, versus the 25 seconds other dryers take.

Similarly, Rubbermaid’s soap dispenser technology ensures that the amount of soap that comes out in the form of foam is limited yet effective in helping the customer wash his/her hands consistently and within a wash. Rubbermaid’s auto-sanitiser is also quite a revolutionary device in that its non-return valve prevents any back flow that can contaminate water with chemicals during the process of sanitisation. In fact, Rubbermaid’s auto-sanitisers have been used at the Dubai World Trade Centre since 2005 – which speaks volumes about its technological advancement and consistency in performance.

At Fragrance Delivery Technologies, their Oxy-Gen Powered system is based on a medical grade innovation, which uses pure oxygen. Combined with Neutra-lox - a proprietary odour-neutralising agent, this eliminates - not masks - any bad aromas, leaving only

fresh scent in the air. The Oxy-Gen powered method ensures exposure of only precise doses of fragrance oil, while protecting the reservoir. This guarantees that the freshness of the first day is maintained throughout the 30 days of the refill cycle, providing round-the-clock freshness. The 2 AA Alkaline batteries last for over a year, which also reduces the hassle of frequently changing and disposing the batteries. All these features add up to the smart air freshening solution for facilities and service managers.

Comfort in designNot very surprisingly, hygiene is also related – rather obscurely – to design. As Colley from Intercare Ltd., mentions, concepts in the washroom involving minimal bodily contact are being preferred. Labyrinth entrances (door-less) are commonly seen and have the distinct advantage of no surface to contaminate as bodily contact is avoided during entry and exit. This aids in ease of cleaning, a pleasant overall appearance, and excellent hygiene as a result. Beldi informs, “We decided to introduce the clean look two years ago. Today, all our products – soap, skin care, surface care dispensers or air fresheners all have a standardized look. They come in chrome, black or white.

Fragrance Delivery Technologies offer the option of the colourful Viva!e air freshening system, or the practical Shield model, which is tamper-proof and perfect for facilities more susceptible to vandalism. The smooth, contoured design of the anti-vandal dispenser makes it difficult for anyone to grip and tamper with the dispenser, particularly when positioned at height, while adding to the overall décor.

As the market for washroom hygiene continues to mature, and institutionalisation simply supplements this growth – it is evident that what takes priority in the smart washroom hygiene space is Applicability, Technology, Eco-friendliness, and Design. It will be interesting to see what more the industry can offer to ensure this.

The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), USA,

defines hand hygiene as ‘the act of cleansing hands with water or liquids and including the use of water, soaps, antiseptics, or other substances, including alcohol-based hand rubs’.

The effectiveness of hand hygiene in preventing infection has been demonstrated for more than 200 years, now. It is one of the cornerstones of reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and preventing occupationally-acquired infections. An HAI is a ‘localised or systemic condition resulting from an adverse

reaction to the presence of an infection agent(s) or its toxin(s) that was not present on admission to the acute care facility’. Depending on the type of infection, HAIs can occur between 24 to 72 hours after hospital admission, 3 to 10 days following discharge, or within 30 to 90 days after a surgical procedure. They increase the complexity of treatment, healthcare costs and poor patient outcomes. Because of the negative impact on patients, increased risks for providers and the escalating costs associated with these occurrences, HAI prevention is a major focal point for patients, healthcare personnel, insurers, governments, and regulatory bodies.

When it comes to hand hygiene in a healthcare setting, training and compliance are two important parameters that must be met consistently.

Training and Compliance in Hand Hygiene

Page 25: High-Tech Hygiene...model ISAL 6000 - On The Road one of its kind, tested in different market segments and well-suited to the UAE market segments. A “mechanical suction” Sweeper

Infection controlIn fact, hand hygiene practices are essential to reducing the spread of HAIs. Healthcare personnel across the globe are being held accountable for their hand hygiene practices to prevent transmission of infection, and healthcare institutions are facing increasing regulation and hand hygiene mandates while being challenged with economic consequences of failing to meet those mandates.

In the GCC region specifically, there is quite a contrast. While countries like the UAE and Qatar are almost at par with international standards in hand hygiene, other GCC countries like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are struggling with infectious diseases like the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome caused by the Coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Just last month, as stated by the World Health Organisation, the National IHR Focal Point for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia notified WHO of 12 additional cases of MERS-CoV infection, including 1 death.

In this region, there is no better time to implement strict infection control programmes to improve the quality of care and patient outcomes. Comprehensive infection prevention programmes must address a range of important interventions, including cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, infection monitoring, antibiotic stewardship, and isolation and control measures. And, as the single most important measure to prevent infection, hand hygiene continues to be the cornerstone of infection prevention activities.

Hand hygieneAccording to the Centre for Disease Control, at any given moment, 2 million to 10 million bacteria can be found from the fingertips to the elbow of a human being. The skin contains a mixture of both resident bacteria and transient bacteria – the latter being potentially disease-causing. The number and types of bacteria on the hands increases with contact with the environment, patients or other healthcare workers. Cross-contamination can occur every time healthcare personnel come in contact with a patient, other healthcare personnel, or the environment. While it is not known where infection transmission begins or ends, the chain of infection transmission occurs when the contamination from one surface is transferred to the susceptible host. Interruption of any part of the chain of infection is expected to reduce transmission by interrupting the chain of transmission.

This is where strict hand hygiene practices come in. Michael Rollins, Consultant Environmental Infection Prevention Specialist, UK, says, “The WHO guidelines on hand hygiene in healthcare involve a multi-modal strategy incorporating the use of alcohol-based hand rubs at point

of care. The 5 moments of hand hygiene methodology defines when healthcare workers should practice hand hygiene during patient care. Healthcare worker compliance with these indications is part of routine performance feedback - an essential strategy for behaviour change.” To obtain a true picture of hand hygiene compliance in a particular facility, it is important to understand current hand hygiene practices and estimates of compliance. Hence, monitoring hand hygiene practice is an important method to drive compliance in a strong hand hygiene programme.

Dr. Mohamed Berer, Medical Director, Medeorx24 Hospital, says, “We follow the WHOs five moments of hand hygiene. We also educate and train our staff during induction and monitor their hand hygiene activity.” To facilitate compliance, the hospital also conducts surveillance to help managers identify barriers to non-compliance.

Training tipsWhile the promotion of a safety-oriented ‘hand hygiene culture’ at the organisational level can have a broad impact, affecting change requires time and should be considered a long-term goal. Education and training must be accessible in a range of formats for different audiences. The WHO guideline on hand hygiene in

healthcare has produced success globally. It offers standardised content and training components. Having hand hygiene principles incorporated into local medical and nursing educational curricula can also strengthen hand hygiene programmes.

Skills training is an integral component of learning appropriate hand hygiene techniques and should include a variety of methods like supervised activities, self-directed group sessions, mentored one-on-one instruction, or short web-based modules. Skill testing may be advisable to assess the effectiveness of training.

In the Middle East, it has been seen that while hand hygiene is given importance, it is not yet on top of the priority list at most hospitals. Henrik Mahaini, COO, Viking Gulf, says, “We have observed through our training and presentations that the level of hand hygiene is not up to the mark in the Middle East. There is definitely room for improvement. Moreover, while the infection control departments are interested in improving hygiene in general in their hospital, we would like to see the hospital administrators take more interest in this concept.” Viking Gulf distributes and promotes Surewash - a computerised machine that aids in training health-care professionals in proper hand hygiene techniques. The machine has a camera and a very sophisticated motion-recognition

technology. It records hand movements. The moment one places ones hands under the lens, the movements are recorded and simultaneously compared with the correct poses that have been pre-programmed into the machine. Correct movements elicit a good score.

Along with equipment like Surewash, it is important that training and education

sessions be well planned, skillfully conducted, and contain the most up-to-date information. Effective education and training programmes need to connect individual existing knowledge with the organization’s policies, compliance expectations, and hand hygiene culture. Once training is done, compliance monitoring comes into effect. Compliance monitoring can increase and sustain engagement, resulting in increased compliance and commitment to process improvement.

One effective way of ensuring compliance is through reminders - targeted messages that are focused on improving hand hygiene practices. These should be regularly updated and changed to remain effective. This can trigger knowledge to action and motivate individual practice improvement. At Medeor 24x7, hand washing posters are available above any hand wash facility within the hospital, describing the right technique and the time required for hand washing as a constant reminder. Similarly, Surewash can monitor, report and train people in hand hygiene without the need for any supervision staff. Through its consistent reports, the machine can improve the base level of hand hygiene significantly and effectively. According to Mahaini, “Our research has revealed that significant results can be obtained within a month of starting training with Sure Wash.” Challenges in hand hygiene trainingIn an article on Patient Safety, Rollins mentions that a study of 60 professional infection control healthcare workers and epidemiologists concluded that technique is of crucial importance in hand hygiene Moreover, significantly, major deficiencies in the hand hygiene technique were detected amongst even highly trained healthcare workers.

There are several challenges that obstruct training in hand hygiene. One is low motivation amongst healthcare workers. And, this can be due to several factors – handwashing agents causing irritation and dryness, inconveniently located sinks, lack of soap and paper towels, lack of time, understaffing or overcrowding, and patient needs taking priority. Other challenges include lack of knowledge of guidelines/protocols, forgetfulness, and disagreement with the recommendations.

While monitoring for compliance is crucial, ensuring that healthcare workers adhere consistently to hand-hygiene training is paramount. For that, motivation is a strong factor. Mahaini suggests, “Hospital housekeepers can motivate their staff to train and practice hand hygiene by turning it into a fun game. Maybe a contest between departments would work. The idea is to ensure that people who are curious about a machine like Sure Wash try and use it at least once. This sends a message to the entire staff about the importance and seriousness of hand hygiene.”

Equipment like Surewash, which is computerised, accurate and efficient seems to be the need of the hour. The lower the need for manual supervision and the higher accuracy in report generation can aid in motivating healthcare workers to engage in proper hand hygiene training and technique. And, going beyond that, the importance of the need for awareness, consistent training and compliance can never be undermined.

Surewash is a computerised machine that aids in training in proper hand-hygiene techniques.

Come, Visit, Network!

With the global cleaning market growing rapidly across regions, the Middle East is catching up, and fast! The growth of the construction, hospitality and healthcare verticals on the backdrop of Qatar 2022 and

Dubai’s successful Expo 2020 bid, has resulted in the hospitality sector looking to add around 45,000 rooms in Qatar and about 280 new hotels in Dubai, fuelling steady growth, leading to companies, especially in the service industry, to step up the quality of their solutions.

The hospitality and healthcare sectors are growing rapidly in the GCC region creating a demand for commercial laundry and cleaning services. Similarly, the need to wash and maintain the UAE’s 11.87 million vehicles is spurring new technologies and innovations in the Car Wash and Car Care sector. In view of the burgeoning market requirements, Jayaraman Nair, Chairman, VIS Exhibitions and Conferences, says, “Keeping this growing sector in thought, the Middle East Cleaning Technology Week (MECTW) aims at reinforcing the Middle East’s position as one of the world’s leading commercial cleaning industry in terms of quality, innovation and environmental responsibility.”

MECTW, which will take place from 2nd to 4th November, 2015, at Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, draws attention to creating a sustainable future by bringing all three facets of the cleaning industry – through its three trade shows – Clean Middle East Pulire Expo 2015, Gulf Car Wash-Car Care Expo and Gulf Laundrex-Linen Care Expo – under a single umbrella. This combined show gives companies the opportunity to combine their expertise and collaborate to create better service solutions across the segments. MECTW is an extraordinary exhibition. The highlight of the show will be the display of innovative sustainable technologies across all facets of the cleaning and hygiene industry, the car wash and car care industry and the laundry and dry cleaning industry. Moreover, the international presence at MECTW is huge. Foreign exhibitors from the United States, United Kingdom, Italy, Turkey, Germany have already confirmed their participation.

Through the three trade shows, three conferences, awards ceremony and associated events - the exhibition continues to grow with over 90% of the show area already booked.

Here, we offer you a glimpse of some of our key participants.

Tell us about Dhofar Global’s expectations from the Middle East Cleaning Technology Week (MECTW).As the Washroom Hygiene Partner of MECTW, Dhofar Global is looking forward to maximising its reach in the distribution of cleaning and hygiene products in the Middle East. In addition, we will launch new products with an aim to showcase our innovations and solutions to our visitors. The presence of global manufacturers and suppliers will enable us to get a deeper insight into the latest innovations and solutions in the cleaning and hygiene industry as well as learn more about our clients’ requirements. Aside from establishing long-term relationships with our existing clients, we are keen to forge ties with new clients.

How is the market for cleaning and hygiene in the UAE comparable with the global industry?According to recent studies, the Middle East cleaning and hygiene industry is set to grow from AED 80 billion to AED 300 billion - a growth of a staggering 275 per cent - by 2020. Within the UAE, the sector is witnessing unprecedented growth because of its expanding population, construction of mega-projects, and rising demand from sectors such as hospitality, education and healthcare. With construction activities gaining momentum as Expo 2020 draws closer, the cleaning and hygiene sector will become more relevant. Hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and other leisure and entertainment complexes will look for state-of-the-art cleaning and hygiene products.

Commercial cleaning is one of the fastest growing service industries and is on a rise in the UAE due to the growing trend of hiring professional facilities management (FM) service provider for cleaning services. Moreover, the UAE’s emphasis on environment-friendly and sustainable solutions has led to an influx of new cleaning and janitorial products. Above all, the country’s desire to attain international standards in hygiene, cleanliness and sterility will continue to drive the local cleaning and hygiene industry.

How do you expect MECTW to impact the market in the UAE? As one of the largest and most comprehensive specialised exhibitions in the Middle East’s cleaning and hygiene sector, MECTW will promote scientific cleaning practices, latest products, innovative technologies, and services along with international cleaning and hygiene practices. Through a series of trade shows, conferences, awards, and associated events, it aims to generate awareness about cleaning and hygiene solutions in the region. This will positively impact the UAE market, enabling local consumers to network with regional and international manufacturers, suppliers and distributors for their cleaning and hygiene requirements, contributing towards the growth of the industry. In addition, it will bring together industry leaders, policy makers and investors from across the world, opening up the possibility of exploring new business avenues and knowledge sharing, which will further help in expansion of the cleaning and hygiene industry in the UAE.

Consumer’s Response

Cleanliness and hygiene in the hospitality industry are the most important factors to

evaluate the quality of any hotel and consequently customer satisfaction. And, Vijay Yannapu, Housekeeping Manager, Holiday Inn Express Dubai Jumeirah, is keenly aware of this. He says, “As a Housekeeping Manager, I have to ensure that all guest rooms are cleaned as per health and safety standards; we follow standard cleaning and sanitising procedures to ensure that all the rooms are cleaned and sanitised in a consistent manner.”

What is the most challenging cleaning task in your properties? On a daily basis, the most challenging cleaning task is sanitising guestrooms and bathrooms. In our day-to-day operations, the vital business activity in the hospitality industry is to maintain hygienic guestrooms, bathrooms, lobby, fitness center, restaurants, meeting rooms and bars.

The goal of the housekeeping is to leave the guest rooms with no traces of the previous occupant. We train our housekeeping personnel to strictly follow proper procedures.

Which hygiene/cleaning product or equipment do you find most useful in combating it?In our day-to-day operations, for all our Holiday Inn Express properties in Dubai (Airport, Dubai Internet City, Jumeirah, Safa) we rely upon Oxivir TB (liquid)/Oxivir wipes from Sealed Air Diversey. These products are highly effective in eliminating a wide variety of pathogenic microorganisms including bacteria, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, viruses and fungi. I would highly recommend this product as it is user-friendly, environment-friendly and cost effective.

Based on your experience with the product, why would you recommend it?We have been using Oxivir TB (liquid)/Oxivir wipes since the past two years. We are able to sanitise

and keep the property hygienic at an affordable cost and low environmental impact than most products available in the market.

The 2-in-1 cleaner disinfectant Oxivir TB (liquid)/Oxivir wipes have significantly reduced our cleaning time by being more efficient. This disinfectant helps to stop spread of germs. .What is the USP or special feature of this product? How does it help in maintaining cleanliness at your hotel?

The main advantage of Oxivir TB (liquid)/Oxivir wipes is that it kills any pathogens, such as bacteria, norovirus, MRSA, VRE, Hepatitis B and C, viruses and fungi. It is efficient and effective. Moreover, they are very safe and pleasant to

use with no strong chemical odour.

Are there any cons of using this product? Oxivir disinfectant cleaner is not recommended to be used on brass, marble and copper.

How would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10?We are very satisfied with the Oxivir TB (liquid)/Oxivir wipes and would rate it at a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10. It works well for daily care.

Holiday Inn Express believes in efficient sanitisation of its premises

Interview

40 CLEAN MIDDLE EAST | SEPTEMBER 2015 www.cleanmiddleeast.ae

Having started off his career in the cleaning and hygiene industry with Johnson

Wax in India, Vishal moved on to head the erstwhile Diversey (now part of Sealed Air) business first in India, then South East Asia, and finally globally for the hospitality, healthcare, commercial laundry and food safety verticals. Vishal Sharma has been an integral part of the global cleaning industry since the past 14 years now. Currently the Senior Vice President and Regional Head – Middle East and Africa (MEA) at Ecolab, Vishal has led teams and businesses towards success in multiple geographies over the last decade. In 2013, he joined Ecolab as the India Country Head and that was the beginning of a new and exciting phase in his career.

Vishal speaks about his current position with the company, his views of the global cleaning and hygiene industry and his plans for the MEA region of this multimillion dollar business, in a candid conversation with Shanti Petiwala.

Tell us a bit about your time with Ecolab in India. I joined Ecolab in India in 2013 and ran the business there for about 18 months. Ecolab’s a great company with a huge variety of businesses

primarily in three industry pillars – hygiene, water and energy. Its hygiene business was established in India in 2007 – albeit a little later than our competitors – but we have made excellent progress and are successfully helping our customers achieve the best global standards.

I feel starting off in the company’s Indian division was a great experience because it enabled me to understand on-ground how the business works, what our practices, our business values and our value propositions are like and how we create value for the customer. While I was there, we successfully improved the performance of the business from all perspectives. Then, I was given the opportunity to run the Ecolab’s business in the MEA region and I’ve been here since the past five months.

How different are the industries in India and the MEA region? In fact, I’ll offer you a global perspective. Let me put it like this. If you think of a hotel in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Morocco, Mumbai, Sydney and San Francisco – typically, their top-most priority would be satisfied guests. That’s what any hotel aims for because that will give them their revenue at the right operating margins. However, this can only be achieved if they provide

a combination of the right level of facilities, hygiene, visual appearance, services and customer interaction. So, if a hotel anywhere in the world is looking for satisfied guests, what they expect in terms of how they manage their operations and their facilities doesn’t differ much. The variation is not more than +/- 20 per cent anywhere.

So, in our business, given that we are in the B2B space and have 15 target segments roughly, the requirements of specific industry segments does not vary much from geography to geography. The business model is pretty much the same. We tweak it where we need to, depending on the needs in any given geography. I think the actual difference lies is in the buying behaviour, the value understanding, the communication protocols, the relationship management, and the understanding of what ‘quality’ and ‘value’ are.

So, how is the buying behaviour and cultural understanding different across the MEA region? The MEA region in itself is a huge geography! Morocco and Dubai are poles apart. Let’s talk in a few parts. If we take the developed Middle East – Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the UAE, and Kuwait to a large extent – the way we do business here is in no way different from

“The focus is on serving our customers with excellence, bringing in best practices and growing our business profitably.” - Vishal Sharma

what is done globally. But the moment you go to, say, Algeria, it’s going to be pretty different. The differences are heavily cultural as is the maturity in understanding hygiene. Dubai is rich with people with international experience, which brings in international expertise, knowledge and benchmarks. So, the standards are sky high, and Dubai is no less than any place in the world. It’s different in the rest of the MEA region. So, the different benchmarks and quality orientation requires focused customer needs understanding and corresponding applications to serve those needs.

What are you working on at Ecolab MEA currently? As we speak, we are present in practically all the verticals in this region. With specific reference to the UAE, we are yet to launch our pest management business, which is extremely specific and requires the right technical capability. At the end of the day, we want to do good business, which means we are helping our customers succeed. By doing so, we can continue investing in the marketplace. The business in the MEA region is building up well. The focus is on serving our customers with excellence, bringing in best practices and growing our business profitably; that’s what we are about. And, if we take care of our customers with the right solutions, if we can solve their problems, growth and profitability are automatic. The idea is to bring in innovation and help them become efficient and effective in what they do.

What are your plans for the company, now? I shall tell you what we are doing based on my analysis over the last few months. There’s a clear understanding that this is a very diverse geography, and it is important for us to pick what we are doing where. We don’t want to do everything everywhere; that’s never a successful formula. The choices have to be careful and clear.

Firstly, the supply chain is very important here. Our idea is to try and localize what we are selling. It’s a key initiative - about how to increase the local content of what we sell versus importing and selling it. Secondly, I’ve observed that the region has staff with several non-MEA nationals, which is good, but it always helps to have strong local talent as well, with a strong understanding of the local fabric and landscape. So, as I look to add talent to our workforce, I want to be sure that we are considering local MEA nationals – not only in the overall employee population but also at the leadership level.

All this comes under the umbrella of innovation. This market is ripe for it. While there are certain developed pockets in this market, there are also several underdeveloped pockets, such as Nigeria, which is the most populous country in Africa (80 million population) and has the highest GDP. There is so much scope there and every country is looking for something new – if businesses like ours offer concepts that make sense and create value, it will be successful. Innovation for us is across the board – from increasing the local content of our product or talent and even in our technology offerings.

How do you educate the price-conscious customer? We often tend to believe that price is a number. I always replace the word price with value. Now, you are looking at a number versus what you are getting for it – it becomes relative instead of an absolute. Yes, the market is sensitive – sensitive to the money spent versus what it gets for those money. This is where the concept of TOC – total operating cost – comes in. For instance in a laundry operation, energy and labor are the biggest costs. If we can bring in a system or solution, which is 50 per cent more expensive but lowers energy consumption by 25 per cent, we provide a great ROI (return on

investment) to the laundry manager. We build technologies and systems to lower the TOC and enhance the overall performance. We are the largest company in the world in all the three industry verticals we play in. We have not got there by offering the lowest price; it’s about offering the highest value and markets do understand this well.

Coming back to the point of education, for us, the entire customer interaction process, the sales process, the service process, is all about education. That’s what we are great at and will continue investing there.

What are the challenges that you are currently facing in the market? That’s an easy one. First is talent, which can be challenging to find in these markets. This region (apart from the UAE, which is doing a great job) needs to invest heavily in the education and university systems. There needs to be a focus on getting a skilled young population that can contribute to the workforce. We have 1.8 billion people with 1.1 billion in Africa and 700 million in the Middle East. Without a growing talent base, companies will struggle and won’t grow, GDPs won’t move and the spending power won’t rise. This is an organic challenge, and if it is not addressed, the region will struggle to reach what it deserves to be in the next 25 years.

Finally, what are your plans for the next five years? It’s very simple. We want to significantly grow our business here. We want to clearly establish ourselves as the best solution provider for our customers, and the most preferred partner for all our customer segments. When someone thinks of hygiene, we would like to be thought of as the best, and we are quickly getting there. We want to be seen and known as the most innovative player providing the best service and best value for money for our customers.

The Smoking Gun

Housekeeping

42 CLEAN MIDDLE EAST | SEPTEMBER 2015 www.cleanmiddleeast.ae

The Smoking Gun

Earlier this year, under the anti-tobacco law, the UAE Ministry of Health imposed a ban on

smoking in public areas and indoor spaces. Moreover, establishments were asked to not provide smoking rooms, ashtrays and the likes in their premises, and no-smoking signs were made mandatory. Despite this, health experts have claimed that smoking habits have been on the rise in the country, attributing it to the growing popularity of sheesha.

Third-hand smokeWhile we have all heard about passive or second-hand smoke, not much is known about third-hand smoke. Extensive research has been carried out on this concept, which is the long-term pollution of indoor environments with carpets, furniture, curtains, mattresses, wallpaper, and even drywall becoming reservoirs of tobacco toxicants long after the last cigarette has been extinguished. In fact, studies have shown that places like airports that allow smoking rooms or designated smoking spots in airport restaurants, still expose

their non-smoking travelers and employees to surprisingly high levels of cigarette smoke. And, a 2002 study found that these toxic brews can re-emit back into the air and recombine to form harmful chemical compunds that remain at high levels long after smoking has stopped occurring.

One of the largest pools of victims is formed by hotel guests. While beautiful, swanky, 5-star hotels across the UAE and international have to mandatorily allot some rooms for non-smoking patrons, in the UAE, the average proportion of smoking to non-smoking rooms remains 70:30. Research has found that tobacco smoke cannot be confined to a hotel room but may spread to adjacent and other non-smoking rooms, hallways, ventilation systems, windows and even utility ducts. Despite immense care taken by the housekeeping teams across hotels, it has been seen that the public remains largely ignorant of third-hand smoke. A study published in Tobacco Control – an international peer review journal – some time ago, found that hotels

that have a partial smoking ban have two times higher nicotine levels on their hotel room surfaces than hotels with a complete smoking ban. The researchers studied the air quality and nicotine residue on the surfaces of smoking and non-smoking rooms in 30 hotels with partial smoking bans and 10 hotels with total smoking bans in California. They also took urine and finger swipe samples from non-smoking participants who spent the night in the hotels to assess their exposure to nicotine.

Not surprisingly, levels of nicotine in the air were much higher in smoking than in non-smoking rooms, but levels in non-smoking rooms in hotels with partial bans were still 40 per cent higher than in hotels with complete bans. The non-smokers who stayed in hotels with partial bans also had higher levels of nicotine and tobacco byproducts such as cotinine in their urine and finger residue samples. Rooms that previously housed smokers retained traces of nicotine and other potential cancer-causing compounds (third-

With hotel guests across the world becoming sensitive about indoor air quality – especially when it comes to smoking - hotels too must take into account the importance and solutions to the ever-green debate of smoking vs. non-smoking rooms, observes Pamini Hemaprabha, Executive Housekeeper and Rooms Specialist, Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates.

Page 43: High-Tech Hygiene...model ISAL 6000 - On The Road one of its kind, tested in different market segments and well-suited to the UAE market segments. A “mechanical suction” Sweeper

hand exposure) that were up to 35 times higher than levels found in hotels that enforced a complete ban on smoking.

The solutionPublic health experts say that the only effective way to clear the air will be to eliminate indoor smoking altogether. While the obvious suggestion is that non-smokers choose hotels with complete smoking bans, the list of such establishments is minimal to say the least. So, far news reports suggest that specific Westin and Marriott properties in the U.S. and Canada have introduced a no-smoking policy since a while now.

However, in the peak season, we are sometimes compelled to allow smoking patrons to occupy non-smoking rooms. Therein lies the dilemma – what if the patron does smoke in the non-smoking room? While it may seem like a minor issue, the sensitivity to air pollution – both public and indoors – in the average patron, might prove this to be a cause of concern. It has been noted, in the UAE and internationally, that smokers who use non-smoking rooms, despite being warned about the room being for non-smokers, do continue to smoke in their rooms. Several hotels, especially abroad, also impose a penalty on such guests; however, sometimes guests dispute the charges and if charged on their

credit card, get it reversed. American Lawyer, Professor, Author, Keynote Speaker and Entrepreneur, Stephen Barth has, in a news report, suggested that must ask guests who are checking in to sign a document – or a new clause on an existing check-in document – that makes it clear that smoking cigarettes in a room and disposing used cigarettes in the hotel room trash can is banned and can result in additional charges.

Another option is for the housekeeping team to take matters into their hands. We can invest in devices that are now creeping into the market. For instance, a company FreshAir Sensors from New Hampshire, USA, has created a sophisticated smoke detection unit that can be hand held or fixed to a wall and send out Wi-Fi alerts as to when tobacco or marijuana smoke is detected. The company plans to launch two versions of this device – one later this year – and the other in 2016. The battery-powered, handheld unit communicates with the central system by Bluetooth

connection to an Android phone. The other unit is a plug-in device that covers over and replaces a standard two-plug power outlet. It attaches via tamper-resistant screws, draws its own power from one outlet and provides a pass-through power outlet from the second. A wearable unit, too, will be launched to detect in real time nicotine from secondhand cigarette smoke or components of marijuana smoke. It records smoking events to internal memory so that a permanent record of time-stamped smoking events is retrievable.

This not only helps us detect tobacco smoke but allows us to assess a room before it is allotted to a non-smoking guest.

The dilemma is not so much one if hotels are clear in their outlook – if they are looking for a casual revenue stream to boost business, then penalizing guests makes no sense, neither does investing in a device. However, if they are looking at preventing damage to their hotel rooms and reputation – policies regarding smoking vs. non-smoking must be strictly put in place.

W yndham Hotel Group, one of the world’s largest hotel companies

with over 7,000 hotels in 66 countries, is leaving a mark on Dubai’s hospitality industry with its clean practices. In 2012, the company arranged for eight hotels in the region operated under its brands to clean up a major section of the Jumeirah Open Beach. The event aimed to support the local community and visitors to the area by clearing the beach of litter, while encouraging staff to engage in more sustainable activities in their daily roles.

Today, Wyndham’s hotels, under the Ramada brand, are leading the Middle East hospitality industry with effective waste management practices. Iftikhar Hamdani, Cluster General Manager, Ramada Hotel & Suites Ajman and Ramada Beach Hotel Ajman and a speaker at the forthcoming Vision Conference during The Hotel Show Dubai 2015, said, “We believe that Ramada provides the best case study for sustainability and waste management throughout the hospitality industry in the region. Based on our waste composition analysis, we can reduce the waste that is being thrown into landfills by 90 per cent. The majority of the hotel’s waste is from food or organic products, which are now converted into fertilizers through our compost

machine. The other portion of waste - paper, plastics, boxes and metals - is being collected for recycling. We launched the ‘Zero Landfill Project’ in 2012 and can say that we have been successful in this initiative, as for three years, we have been able to divert approximately 985,500 kg of waste from the landfill. This is based on an average computation of 900 kg of diverted waste per day.”

Hamdani continued, “Our good practices have changed a lot in the region. We are the pioneer, and 25 hotels across the Middle East are following us in our waste management guidance and have installed compost machines. Many other hoteliers have visited the Ramada to learn more. We have received support and recognition from different institutions including Ajman Municipality and the Green Hotelier program by International Tourism Partnership, and have won the Wyndham Green Award for two consecutive years, which is a notable achievement as our initiatives have been recognised not just in the Middle East but across different continents where Wyndham is present.”

Iftikhar Hamdani will be speaking about Why you should follow our lead in waste management at the Vision Conference 2015. He said, ‘The Hotel Show is one of the busiest

events in the hospitality industry and attendance is increasing year-on-year. For me speaking in its main conference provides a good opportunity to share good practices by Ramada Ajman as I want more hotels to join our club in CSR activities, particularly in waste management, celebrating different events like Earth Hour, Earth Day, and World Environment Day, and overall in our environment campaign.”

In 2014, 45 per cent of The Hotel Show’s 600 exhibitors were from the Operating Equipment and Supplies and Technology and Facilities Management sectors including cleaning and hygiene equipment and solutions, waste disposal and management services, recycling systems and facilities.

This year exhibitors include Reza Hygiene, providers of cleaning and disinfection products and services with a focus on sustainable hygiene; EPSCO (Environment Protection Services Co. LLC), the first company in the Middle East to have achieved ISO certification for a joint 9000, 14000 and 18000 systems; and Greentech, an integrated energy solutions company with recent projects including Hilton Ras al Kamiah, Intercontinental Dubai and the new Dubai Sustainable City.

At the 3rd annual Vision Conference, 2015 Vision Conference Partner, Canon Middle East will join the panel debate on Sustainability for a better tomorrow, while other presentations include: Defining green hospitality, areas of actions and change and UAE trends; F&B waste management and water waste; and How sustainability standards can drive business performance.

The Hotel Show and the Vision Conference are free-to-attend events taking place on 28-30 September 2015 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Register your place now at: www.thehotelshow.com

The UAE – with its burgeoning economy and its international feel and

exposure – seemed the ideal place to pursue bigger dreams. So, in 2006, the company was launched in Dubai with cleaning services and building maintenance at the helm.

Jamal Mohd. Abul Kalam, Managing Director, Al Najma Al Fareeda, says, “Cleaning is an activity that the world cannot live without, and we identified the need of the public at the right time when we launched our company in Kuwait and consequently in Dubai.” He adds, “The market in Kuwait had specific requirements to the local culture – quite a contrast from the UAE market. In fact, before we started the UAE company, we were only exposed to the Kuwait market. However, with UAE, we gained enough international experience to grow.” As the company got increased exposure to the international market, it started to add more segments to both its Kuwait and UAE companies – security, office boys, MEP and even Facilities Management.

The USPGiven that the country is currently filled with scores of cleaning and facility management companies, Al Najma Al Fareeda finds that experience and knowledge of local culture is its USP. With more than 20 years of experience under their belt, the company is more than equipped to tap people’s needs and demands and meet them well. They train their staff through a strict training process. Kalam says, “Our people are experienced and well-trained. Being ISO certified, we ensure our new staff undergoes 15-20 days of basic training to understand our services, after which they undergo technical training for another 15 days.” Thus, the staff is filtered well before being deployed on site.

The biggest challenge in the industry is the increasing competition from small companies that set up shop without any knowhow or expertise in the field of total facilities management. Kalam says, “They don’t know the market and deliver poor services on the basis of low quotations. Several times, our customers have not renewed our contracts, hired such inexperienced

companies and then come back to us for our quality services.”

Quality servicesQuality and trust are the biggest strongholds of the Al Najma Al Fareeda services. “We ensure that if we are hired for a service, the customer gets his/her worth. In fact, this is our 10th year in this business and we are here because of these principles,” informs Kalam, proudly. Kalam finds that the UAE market is only growing, especially with Expo 2020 on the threshold. The company is expecting many more facility management contracts with all the investments that are taking place in the country.

Al Najma Al Fareeda is positioned to add more quality services to its portfolio. Soon, it plans to start rope access services along with tank cleaning and car wash. Other services, which are in the pipeline, include swimming pool maintenance, security equipment trading, fire fighting services, etc. “By 2020, our aim is to be the one-stop-shop for any facilities management needs,” concludes Kalam.

Focus

Al Najma Al Fareeda International Group of Companies, is a total facilities management company that has its roots in Kuwait. Started in 1998, the company provided janitorial and recruitment services. With building maintenance particularly, clean buildings were the key requirements cross the Middle East at that time, and it was only natural for the company to seek new avenues beyond Kuwait.

Essential elements of our everyday life, home care products are increasingly

being criticised because of the danger of some petrochemical ingredients used in their composition. For instance, quaternary ammonium and bleach may represent a real hazard to human health, animal well-being, as well as the environment. That is why currently they are sources of frequent questioning and are quite alarming too.

Bio productsThere is now an international awareness programme aimed at limiting the risks linked to the use of chemical products. In addition, a recent European Regulation aims to restrict the distribution of dangerous chemical components as well as strictly regulate their use. Throughout their life cycle, detergents and particularly biocides, represent a danger for health and the environment. The active substances found in these biocide products are in general toxic, and the toxicity persists long after they have become waste. At present, no lasting and safe alternative, comparable in terms of use and biocide efficiency, is available to replace the chemical-synthetic products. There is no concentrated disinfectant solution of renewable origin, which could be:

• Used at the same dilution rate compared with those required by the professional market; • In conformity with the effectiveness required ; • Without risk when in use; • Biodegradable of 100 per cent of the formula and without eco toxicity after elimination.

Salveco - chemistry inspired by the futureMeet a new generation of biodegradable biocide products. These products are made from plant-based actives with an ultimate biodegradability of 100 per cent on the formula. They all conform to the disinfecting standards, concentration, dilution, contact time and referenced strains. The disinfection Salveco products are concentrated and of comparable effectiveness to the leading market products, and they are based on components exclusively resulting from renewable resources and are plant-based. The biocide substance used is an organic molecule from agrarian resources, which does not introduce toxicity compared with

the above-mentioned common chemical-synthetic surfactants.Efficient and safe, the Salveco products conform to the European standards for biocidal activity of chemical disinfectants required by hygiene specialists, while protecting the user and the environment, throughout its life cycle. In fact, Salveco received the ‘Innovation Price Inovana’ in 2009 and the ‘Innovation Trophy’ Rocher Group Supplier in 2015.

Tried and testedA test with System Sure Plus revealed that the disinfectant from Salveco successfully removed all bacteria from the cleaned area. Salveco is available with Fayfa Chemicals, UAE.

Stone Restoration System The Sanwa Kenma stone restoration system is a revolutionary cleaning system that brings stone back to life. It consists of pads coated with billions of microscopic diamonds. The pads clean and polish the floor mechanically instead of chemically – all you need to do is add water. The SR system is unique and intended for cleaning of all hard floors. This benefits both costs and the environment by completely eliminating the use of chemicals and the need for periodic maintenance. A great advantage of the SR system is quick processing to complete restoration in a limited renovation period.

Sanwa Kenma is currently available with Continental Trading in the UAE.

Innovative Sweeping Solution Scandia, by Swedish brand Broddson, is a unique sand-sweeper due to its sheer ability to clear 1.2 tons of sand per minute. It is ideal to clean a high volume of sand, especially on the sides of flyovers and highways. Moreover, it is user-friendly, easy to transport, has low-maintenance cost and covers a large area within a short period of time.

With a sweeping path of up to 3,000 mm, Scandia comes equipped with automatic relief valves, PPS on all of its three brushes, support legs and an electric water pump. The sweeper is also equipped with articulated arms that enable the unit to move sideways, which makes it easy to clean narrow passageways. The system’s air filter is a top Donaldson topspin with a self-cleaning cyclone filter/oil bath. The unit’s fuel tank capacity is 120 litres and has a maximum transport speed of 40knt/h. The on-board water tank’s capacity is 1,150 litres. Scandia can also be customized with a variety of options. Scandia Sand Sweepers are available with Al-Bariq Equipment.

Robotic Pool CleaningMarlin is a new, innovative, robotic pool cleaning system that stays in the water all the time. It has no wires or cables and is free to move without any restrictions. It recharges itself in the water by induction whenever necessary and does not require the pool to be covered. It has a smart filter that collects the heaviest dirt, while the lighter dirt (which could clog up the filter) floats on the water and will be absorbed by the swimming pool filter. Marlin is installed in four easy steps: activation of the robot after initial charging, positioning of the charging base (in water for existing pools, hidden for pools under construction), configuration, immersion of the robot in the pool. The robot can be programmed and the software updated via Bluetooth using the console supplied or via a dedicated App for smartphones and tablets.

Marlin is designed to provide maximum reliability with no noise. It comes complete with Lithium-ion batteries, two next generation turbines (brushless), belt driven by magnetic couplings, and perfect isolation of the motors. Another major USP is that Marlin guarantees the same performances in horizontal and vertical walls; it also adapts to pools of different shapes and sizes: small, large, smooth or rough walls, corners, bends, steps.

Marlin is currently available with Aroma Est.

Advertorial

Junco Trading was established in 1993 and has been an authorised distributor of 3M industrial tapes

and adhesives since 1995. Over the last 20 years, the company’s product range has expanded to include 3M abrasives, marine, aerospace, automotive-aftermarket and commercial care solutions and products. It also has a portfolio of power tools (cutting, grinding and polishing machines) of brands such as 3M, Dynabrade, Chicago Pneumatic, Cibo, Desoutter, Loeser. Junco strives to pursue of consistent excellence in catering to niche industries such as industrial, marine, aerospace, commercial care, and oil & gas in the Middle-Eastern, Asian and European markets.

Given the wide expanse of the 3M products range, Junco started its cleaning and hygiene division in 2012. Its entry into the commercial care and cleaning sector was relatively straightforward due to existing clientele from other sectors. Over the years the company has been able to successfully penetrate cleaning companies, facilities management companies and end users such as hotels, restaurants and hospitals.

The cleaning industry Rishi Dhingra, Executive Director, says, “The cleaning industry, unlike the construction industry in this part of the world, is not project-driven or affected (as much) by the local economy. Everyone needs to clean and maintain existing infrastructure at all times – be it towers, hotels, malls, offices, residences, hospitals, etc. The cleaning goes on unaffected regardless of the market outlook, making it essentially

recession-proof.” And it only gets better for companies like Junco since the supply of completed projects is almost always on the up. There are, however, a lot of players in the cleaning industry already present. The risk for increasing competition is always there in a growing economy. Moreover, there is a lot of focus on ‘green’ products in this region now, observes Dhingra.

The global commercial, industrial, institutional and home segments are catching up with the growing awareness about clean and hygiene standards in the Middle-Eastern region. He adds, “According to rough estimates, the cleaning products market is estimated to be over AED 100 billion.”

The Junco portfolioDhingra says, “We cover a fairly well-rounded and complete range of products in the cleaning and maintenance sector.” From the 3M range, the company carries the ‘Easy Clean System’, ‘Easy Trap Duster System’, and ‘Easy Shine Applicator Systems’. Getting into pads, they have the Scotch-Brite Hand Pads and griddle cleaning products, 3M Floor Pads and others like sanding screens and marble floor-care products. 3M Shortening Monitors, 3M Hard Floor Maintenance Products (Doodlebug Pad Holder, Floor Sweeper), 3M Twist n Fill Cleaning chemical management system, general and restroom cleaning products, 3M Scotch Guard Products (Marble, Carpet, Glass), 3M Safety-walk Matting, Tapes and Treads including Tub and Shower Safety Strips are also part of the portfolio.

Junco has been fairly successful in the hotel, restaurant and hospital industries, and the cleaning and facilities management companies that

in turn cater to these. “Though, by no means have we been able to do full justice to them as yet. Other target industries would be schools, building towers, warehouse and office spaces.”

Towards the future“No business comes without its fair share of challenges,” observes Dhingra. He says that a major challenge that Junco faces is the customer’s lack of product awareness. Customers tend to compare well-branded, top quality products with low cost and unbranded ones, purely on the basis of unit cost while not considering the life and finishing quality of these products. Hence, the education of the customer is critical.

Another would be the sheer competition of top tier products in the market. The middle-eastern market is still in its nascent stages and still finding its footing. Apart from local companies, the region is witnessing an influx of a new range of cleaning and janitorial products of late, thanks to key factors that include efforts of GCC nations to diversify, the renewed economic activity despite political uncertainty looming over some parts of the region, and the economic slowdown in Europe. In fact, these very recession-hit European companies are looking to enter the Middle-Eastern markets.

But, Junco remains undeterred. Its immediate plan is to add an entirely new segment of products to its existing portfolio. The company is also venturing into cleaning equipment and janitorial items along with cleaning machines such as dry and wet vacuum cleaners, steam machines and others in this range, again from quality European manufacturers to distribute across this region.
