FST Analysis Introduction

This software is designed to automate the forced swim test.

The software analyzes the video image of up to eigth animals simultaneously and automatically calculates the time spentstruggling, swimming and floating as suggested by newlyenhanced approaches.


FST Analysis

Mice & RatsMice and rats show diffrerent behaviors during the forced swim test. Oursystem can be used with both species.

High throughputUp to 8 animals can be tested simultaneously what allows high throughputtesting. All acquired data are calculated and presented in real time alreadyduring the experiment. The possibility to save different setup configurationsand to generate pdf based summary reports automatically makes it even easierto deal with your test sessions.

Three behaviorsComparing the active versus the inactive time provides only a small amount ofresults that are possible to get from the forced swim test. Our system iscapable to distinguish between the three behaviors struggling, swimming andfloating and considers also the temporal course of the shown behaviors.

Real time individual and group performance calculationDuring the experiment the acquired data are calculated anddisplayed graphically in real time. Thus you are able to reallysee what is going on.

Extensive statistic functionsThe software offers a big number of statistical test to analyzethe acquired data. You don't need to go through the data withother programs. Just select the algebraic function or test youwant to be calulated and see the results instantly. Onebehavioral test - one software.

Useful diagramsAlready during the experiment the acquired data areanalyzed and presented in convincing diagrams. All diagramscan be exported in different file formats (bmp, wmf and emf).

Report generatorAn integrated Acrobat pdf based report generator makes it easy togenerate standardized experiment reports for each animal or group in avery short time.

Further processing of data and diagramsThe collected data can be exported for other applications. Furtherindividual data manipulations can be conducted.All diagrams that have been generated during the experiment or thedata analysis are saved in the vector graphic format (wmf) therebymaking them easy to integrate and work with in other programs.

Database integrationThe software offers standard interfaces to communicate with otherapplications like databases. Thereby it is for example possible totransfer data into existing animal databases easily. You can importdatabase records into the FST software, perform experiments andexport the data back into your animal databse. That is true highthroughput!

FireWire supportThe software supports the FireWire/iLink port for digital videocameras. You can use any DV-Camera with a FireWire port.This simplifies the installation because no framegrabber card ordriver problems occur. It´s just plug and measure.

Here you can configure theexperiments and save differentinformation about the animals andthe experiment.

You can put in a description of theexperiment as well as a descriptionfor each animal.

You can also combine animals to agroup so the data are summarizedlater on automatically.

In this section the filter settings for thedetection of the three differentbehaviors are done.

This only needs to be done once,when the whole system is set up. Afterthat, no filter adjustment is necessaryany more.

During the filter configuration the videoinput and the detected behaviors areshown in real time so it is very easy toadapt the filters until the results meetyour expectations.

In the upper left corner, the video inputof the 8 animals is shown. Underneaththe video image, the currently detectedbehaviors are presented in real time foreach single animal.

On the right side the summarized dataare shown in a table and in diagrams,again for each single animal and also forthe animal groups.

The table and the diagrams are updatedin dependence of the analysis intervalselected in the configuration (in thisexample every 60 seconds).

The table and the diagrams show thedata of the entire experiment (360seconds). In the table there is nowalso a row that shows the meanvalues for each behavior.

All data and diagrams can beexported in various file formats.

The integrated data analysis offers extensive possibilities to analyze and visualize the data. You can forexample group the data of different animals of several experiments and perform intra- and inter-groupcalculations and comparisons.

FST Analysis Add-on products

Custom made infrared illuminationdevices improve the results of the videoanalysis. These units also contain acamera. Each unit can be used with twoanimals.

An A/D video converter can be used tofeed analog video material (either live ortaped) into the system.

We offer all inclusive "out-of-the-box"systems that include all devices(computer, camera, cables, illuminationetc.) that are necessary to set up anautomated FST.

Digital video cameras (FireWire/iLink)are used to feed the video signal into thecomputer with the FST Analysis software.

A remote control to start and stop theprogram without the keyboard can beuseful in behavioral experiments.
