HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

David Burns Course: Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care

Developing an interest in the sector whilst working with young people at Blaydon RFC and passionate about helping people with learning disabilities to have a voice in society and achieve their potential, David secured a job as a Support Worker at Dilston College.

Whilst working here, he heard about the

higher education opportunities at the

college and how a professional qualification

could help him progress in his career.

David went on to become a Learning

Support Worker at Dilston College, which

provides further education for young

people with learning disabilities, where he

learned about the opportunity to study

HE at Gateshead College. He enrolled

on the Foundation Degree to enable his

progression within the health and social

care sector.

“I heard great things about Gateshead

College because of the partnership they

have with Dilston College. They have a really

strong reputation for delivering excellent

health and social care programmes and I

wanted to progress my career so I enrolled

on the Foundation Degree part time, which

was ideal as it allowed me to continue with

work.

“I’ve found the course to be really hands on

and what I’m learning can easily be applied

in the workplace. The modules in assessment

methods have helped me to interact with

social workers and understand how we can

work together for the best outcome.”

David also found the level of flexibility and

support has helped him with his studies.

“The support I’ve received in my studies

has been great; the teaching team are

knowledgeable and are always happy to be

flexible around my work commitments.

I’ve also had fantastic personal support; the

teaching team identified that I had Dyslexia,

something I wasn’t aware of, and helped

arrange financial support for me which was

a great help.”

Longer life expectancy, a growing population and the

availability of new treatments are all serving to push

employees are needed. The NHS is one of the top five

largest employers in the world and the largest employer

in the UK. The sector offers many career paths and

many opportunities for career progression and career

diversification.

Supporting children, young people, families and

communities is an increasingly high profile area of

social policy, with a huge emphasis on safeguarding and

accountability within public service.

Our programmes are hands on with an emphasis on

work based learning. If you’re not already in a related

job, we can help you find placements and make valuable

connections. Our aim is to make your learning as

relevant as possible to your employer and our close links

Phil Duggan Course: HND Computing

Self confessed ‘nerd’ Phil turned his passion for web design into a successful business start-up, thanks to his programme at Gateshead College.

After working for years in a contact centre,

Phil wanted to pursue a career in something

he really loved and decided to follow his

interest for web design by enrolling on an

HND in Computing at Gateshead College.

He said: “I’d always been a bit of a nerd

when it came to building websites and I

knew web design and build was a growing

industry. I saw an opportunity to change

my career path and do something I was

passionate about.

“I’d previously been to Gateshead

College when I was younger, I had a great

experience at the time so it made sense for

me to go back and study at a college I had

confidence in.”

Phil studied his HND around work and

family commitments and was impressed

with how flexible the college was to his

needs.

“The lecturers were really understanding

and supportive, they realised I had other

commitments outside of the programme

and did their best to accommodate me.

I found the programme was really flexible

for me and I managed to juggle studying

with looking after my two children.”

One of Phil’s projects was to create a

commercial website for local firm Sullivan

Roofing Company. Phil built the customised

site using a mix of software and HTML, he

then presented the project to his client.

John Sullivan owner of Sullivan Roofing said:

“I was really impressed with Phil’s work, his

whole attitude to the project was extremely

professional and I’ve ended up with a really

great looking site that shows what services

we can offer our customers.”

Phil has now set up Noiseworks, a creative

digital strategy company and is enjoying

working for a varied client base and applying

his new skills.

“The business is doing really well and I’m

enjoying the challenge of working for myself.

“My programme really helped me not only

with the programming side of things and

learning how to use new software, but it also

taught me other valuable skills such as how

to market my business, which has been a

real help when setting up on my own.”

hands on course that would prepare her for

going straight into a job.

Jennie said: “I chose Gateshead College

because I wanted to do something more

vocational, I knew the college was really

successful in the area of sport and a friend

of mine had studied the Foundation Degree

in Sports Coaching, she showed me the

structure of the course and it seemed like

the perfect option for me.”

As well as a the practical focus of the Sports

Coaching programme, Jennie also enjoyed

classroom lessons and found the college to

be a supportive learning environment for

her.

Jennie added: “The lessons were interesting

and the teachers were really passionate and

kept me engaged the whole way through

as well as being really approachable. I think

the smaller class sizes are a huge plus point,

you feel like you’re getting a much more

personal experience than you would get by

going to university.”

During her time at college, Jennie took part

in work experience placements where she

was able to apply her learning in the work

place. This practical focus gave Jennie the

transferable skills needed to set up as a self-

employed personal trainer.

“I worked in schools and took part in work

placements to get experience in coaching

which really helped me develop my

personal skills and fully prepared me for

going out on my own.

“The modules were really practical and

learning about nutrition and sports injury

has been crucial as a trainer. My course

was great at preparing me for working in

different situations and with a wide range of

people, from different ability levels to those

with disabilities; it’s essential as a personal

trainer that I can adapt the way I train to

suit the individual client.”
