At Darlington College we offer a broad range of higher education courses whichcan be undertaken in a number of ways. From degrees and Foundation Degrees toprofessional and postgraduate qualifications, covering a wide range of subjects,there really is something to suit everyone.

You will study in our dedicated University Centre and have access to the manyexcellent facilities at the college, all aimed at maximising students success. Ourcollege resources and facilities include; careers guidance, friendly and professionalstaff and small class sizes in all subjects.

We offer many university level qualifications and recruit approximately 1,000students annually. The courses range from those designated by respectiveprofessional institutes to those validated by various examination bodies and thosedelivered in partnership with universities.

The majority of our higher education courses are delivered on a part time basis tofit in with other commitments you may have. We can provide tuition during thedaytime or evening and can accommodate students who attend on a day-releasefrom work basis.

We want to help you to succeed in your chosen career and have the ability to aim higher.

About Higher Education

Higher Education (HE) is usually defined as a course that isclassed as Level 4 or above. Here at the college, you canchoose from an extensive range of qualifications, including;Higher National Certificates or Diplomas, Foundation Degrees,degrees, postgraduate courses and work based qualificationssuch as NVQ Level 4. There are specific entry requirementsrelating to all qualifications which are detailed in thisprospectus alongside each course. For more informationrelating to any of the courses speak to our Customer ServicesTeam on 01325 503030.

University Partnership

Thanks to a partnership agreement with the University ofTeesside we can offer a wide choice of higher educationqualifications. Awards of the University of Teesside aredelivered in partnership at Darlington College. This is ideal forstudents who prefer to study locally rather than having to travelto university out of the area and is the foundation of the ‘Study High Study Local’ ethos.

The college also offers teaching and learning courses inconjunction with the University of Huddersfield and theUniversity of Sunderland.

Qualifications Explained

Foundation Degrees

Foundation Degrees are work related qualifications that havebeen developed directly with employers to encourage people of all ages into higher education. These are flexible coursesmaking them ideal if you are already employed. Courses cantake two years full time or two or three years part time tocomplete. You can choose to use the Foundation Degree as aspringboard to an Honours degree, or progression to advancedprofessional qualifications.

• You can combine study and work in a convenient way to obtain this qualification

• You can achieve higher level skills which meet industry needs

• You will receive high levels of support

• They have agreed progression routes with the university

• You will work on practical projects which stimulate real industry environments

Professional Courses and Postgraduate Qualifications

We offer innovative professional courses that have beendeveloped using the experience and expertise that our tutorshave acquired through close links with industry. Thesecourses have been designed for people developing theircareers in areas that include; accountancy, management,marketing, engineering, construction, teacher training,childcare, health and social care, computing and journalism.

Higher National Certificate/Higher National Diploma Courses

These courses are offered on a part time basis so if you are in employment, or have limited time available you can still study towards a higher qualification. Like FoundationDegrees, they are highly regarded by employers and relevant to the world of work.

Work-Based Studies Level 4

These courses are a modern way of gaining a degree atundergraduate and postgraduate level by recognising that you gain valuable learning through work. This can be used as the basis of your individual course.

These courses are degree routes which:

• Offer you accreditation for previous relevant learning and qualifications

• Build on your existing skills and experiences

• Develop new learning opportunities

• Enable you to study within a flexible timescale

Access to Higher Education Courses

If you do not have the required entry qualifications for adegree course, you may be able to study an Access coursewhich will enable you to progress onto a degree aftersuccessful completion. Access courses are open toeveryone, regardless of previous qualifications. Pathwaysthrough the Access course include; humanities and socialscience, mathematics and science, teacher training, nursingand routes allied to medicine. Access into higher educationcourses can be studied full time over one year or part timeover two years. Impartial Advice and Guidance

Counselling

If you are finding that your study is putting extra pressure on you, or you would like to talk to somebody in completeconfidence about a personal issue, the college offers a free and confidential counselling service.

Childcare

A range of childcare services are available at the modernpurpose built centre which caters for children aged 6 weeks to 14 years old. Additional Learning Support

The Additional Learning Support Team can provide the extrasupport you may need to help you succeed on your course.Studying at the college is not only about gaining a qualification,but about enjoying the whole experience while you are here.

Learning Resources

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) provides access to a wide range of textbooks, reference books, journals,magazines, DVDs, CD-Roms and online resources. Most books can be taken out on loan on production of a current college ID Card. Within the LRC students haveaccess to fully networked and internet enabled computers.Information and online resources are available through Fronter,the college’s Virtual Learning Environment which can beaccessed by all students to obtain course materials uploadedby your tutors.

Student ID Cards

When you enrol here at the college, you will receive anIdentification Card. Your ID card will need to be on your personat all times when you are on college premises. Access intocollege will not be granted without your card and you will needyour card to access the Learning Resource Centre. This card is your responsibility and a cost will be incurred if you require a renewal.

What do I do next?

Have a look through this publication to find the courses ofinterest to you. If you know which course you want to studyand have the necessary qualifications there are two waysof applying depending on whether it is a part time orfull time course.

Part time higher education courses

You can enrol at the college at any time. There is no need tocomplete an application form (although the partner universitymay require you to complete a university application form).You will, however, be required to complete the College’sLearning Agreement and where necessary arrange anappointment to meet the course tutor to discuss the entryrequirements. Just drop into the college and our friendlyCustomer Services Team will take you through every step ofthe process.

Full time higher education courses

If you would like to join a full time Foundation Degree, HND ordegree course you should apply through the Universities andColleges Admissions Service known as UCAS. To applycontact UCAS direct:

Applications through UCAS should be made by January ofthe year you intend to commence the higher educationcourse, although later applications will still be processed.Applications that reach UCAS after 30th June (route A) or12th June (route B) will be held for clearing.

Money Matters – fees, grants and loans

Part Time Study

If you are a part time higher education student, financialhelp is available towards your fees and other costs related to your course. How much you receive depends on yourpersonal circumstances and the type of course you do.

Fees

Details of fees for September 2009 courses will be available from August 2009 and you can obtain thisinformation by calling the Customer Services Team on 01325 503030. For Foundation Degrees, HNCs, BAs andUCPD courses linked to a partner university, fees will beinvoiced directly to you from the relevant university.Professional course fees will be payable to the college.

Grants

Help may be available with fees depending on yourcircumstances. You can apply to Student Finance Englandfor non repayable help towards the costs in the form of a“Fee” and “Course” grant. The “Fee” grant is available tohelp with the cost of the course tuition fees and is provideddirectly to the university or college. The “Course” grant is tohelp with study costs, such as books, materials and traveland is paid directly to you. The support is means testedbased on your income and that of your partner if you haveone. The maximum “Fee” grant you can get is based on thenumber of credits you are studying in an academic yearcompared to the full time equivalent course.

To find out more and to apply you should contact StudentFinance England. The PTG1 form is not normally madeavailable until mid August prior to the beginning of theacademic year. However, your form will not be assessed until you have attended your course for 2 weeks. If you need to know whether you will receive support for your feesor a grant, please check the following websitewww.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance and click on forms andguides, the form you will need to fill in is the PTG1 Form.

Access to Learning Fund

The Access to Learning Fund provides extra money if youneed help for your course or to stay in higher education. Itcan provide help if you are a student on a low income or infinancial hardship. You can for example use the fund forspecific course or living costs that aren’t already met byother grants such as childcare, books, equipment and travel.Money from the Access to Learning Fund is paid on top ofthe standard student finance package. It is not meant as asubstitute for it. You would be expected to apply for all theloans, grants and bursaries to which you are entitled beforeasking for help from the Access to Learning Fund.

Eligibility is decided on an individual basis and applicationforms are available from the University of Teesside by calling Student Services on 01642 342277 or by [email protected].

Employer Payment

If your employer is paying for your course fees then you will need to provide a letter from your employer stating thiswhen you enrol.

Disabled Students

If you are a student with a disability or specific learningdifficulty, you may be able to receive extra help from theDisabled Students Allowance. It is a grant to help meet theextra costs of studying that student’s face as a direct resultof a disability or specific learning difficulty. They aredesigned to help disabled students study on an equal basiswith other students. The amount you receive doesn’t dependon your household income. Full Time Study

If you are starting a full time Foundation Degree in 2009 you will not have to pay your tuition fees up front (althoughyou may do so if you wish). New full time students can getloans, grants and bursaries to help with their tuition fees and living costs. These help you study first, and pay backwhen you’re earning.

Tuition Fee Loans

Student loans for fees are paid direct to the college oruniversity and you have to apply for every year of yourcourse. You won’t have to start making repayments untilyou’ve left your course and are earning over a certainamount a year. Your repayments will be a percentage of your earnings over the set amount. Deductions are usuallymade through the PAYE tax system by your employer in thesame way as tax and National Insurance contributions.

Maintenance Grant

Around half of all full time students are also likely to beeligible for a yearly maintenance grant. You will be assessed for this grant when you submit your application for support from Student Finance England. This grant is means tested based on household income and alsoaffects the amount of student loan you will be eligible toreceive. This is non-repayable money to help with your livingcosts. Bursaries / Scholarships

Please check with the individual university for moreinformation on their bursaries/scholarships, as this can varybetween each institute.

Full time Cert Ed and PGCE students should apply toStudent Finance Direct for financial support, visitwww.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance and fill out a PN1 Form.

Maintenance Loan

All full time UK students can apply for a maintenance loantowards their living costs. All students are entitled to borrowup to 72% of the maximum amount made available by theGovernment. The remaining 28% is means-tested. Howmuch of this remaining support you can get depends onyour household income and the amount of maintenancegrant you receive. This loan is repaid together with the“Tuition Fee” loan mentioned earlier. Contact StudentFinance Direct online at www.studentfinancedirect.co.uk

Access to Learning Fund and Disabled Student Allowance

The Access to Learning Fund and the Disabled StudentAllowance is also available for full time students. Accounting

Association of Accounting Technician (AAT)Level 4

Duration – 1 year part time.

Entry requirements – If you don’t have one of the followingthen you will need to speak to the tutor for further direction;an AAT intermediate NVQ Level 3, PE1 or equivalent of the senior accountancy qualifications or a UK degree in accounting.

About the course – This course will give you the knowledgeand skills you need to go far and get the rewards youdeserve. You will be assessed via exams which are set by theAAT, a project and also a skills test. The modules which areexamination assessed are; contributing to the planning andcontrol of resources, contributing to the management ofperformance and the enhancement of value, drafting financialstatements and preparing personal taxation computations.The project module is managing systems and people in theaccounting environment. The skills test module is operating acash management and credit control system.

Further progression – You may want to study a fullprofessional accounting qualification such as CIMA orprogress onto a degree course.

Foundation Degree in AccountancyLevel 5

Duration – 3 years part time.

Entry requirements – NVQ Level 3 in accounting or CIMACertificate in Business or equivalent. If you do not have theseacademic qualifications you are encouraged to apply asrelevant work experience will be taken into account.

About the course – This course will help you develop acareer in accountancy by enabling you to obtain practical andcritical knowledge and an understanding of the accountancyprofession. The course covers; financial accounting,management accounting, taxation and organisationalmanagement. You will be assessed in a variety of waysincluding; examinations, collating case studies, presentations,assignments and work based projects.

Further progression – BA (Hons) Business Management atthe University of Teesside. You may also choose to study for aprofessional accountancy qualification.

Accounting is concerned primarily with the measurement and communication of financialinformation to aid decisions and control in a variety of organisations. Accounts aretherefore at the heart of information systems – the fastest growing area of business activity.

Careers in this industry include;

Financial accounting

Management accounting for both private and public sectors.

Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA)

(CIMA) Advanced Diploma

Level 5

Duration – 2 years part time.

Entry requirements – There are a number of qualificationswhich allow entry onto this course; AAT Technicians, or CIMACertificate in Business Accounting, or Bachelor Degree inAccountancy, Business Studies/Business Administration orequivalent. Other qualifications are acceptable, please speak to the course tutor for more information or enquire with CIMA directly.

About the course – If you wish to pursue a career in theareas of strategic business and strategic financialmanagement then this CIMA qualification is for you. Thecourse covers; organisational management and informationsystems, performance evaluation, financial accounting and taxprinciples, integrated management, decision management,financial analysis. Assessment on this course is by a formalexamination at the end of the course. You must completethese six modules before you can progress onto the strategiclevel subjects which are; business strategy, risk and controlstrategy and financial strategy. After successful completion,you are required to pass CIMA’s test of professionalcompetence in management accounting.

Further progression – CIMA Strategic Level.

(CIMA) Strategic Level

Level 6

Duration – 1 and half years part time.

Entry requirements – CIMA Advanced Diploma.

About the course – This course builds on the knowledgegained on the CIMA Advanced Diploma. The modulescovered are; business strategy, risk and control strategy andfinancial strategy. After successful completion, you arerequired to pass CIMA’s test of professional competence inmanagement accounting. Assessment on this course is byformal examination at the end of the course.

Further progression – You may want to study a MBA or DBA at the University of Teesside or other universities whichdeliver the chartered management accountant courses.

Business and ManagementThe business world is an ever increasing and changing environment and is brought aboutby advances in knowledge, technology and improved communications. Businessorganisations need more than ever to maintain their competitive edge in the face of suchchanging environments. In striving to do so, they require an informed and responsiveworkforce with the relevant knowledge, skills and competencies.

Foundation Degrees

Foundation Degree in Business Management

Level 5

Duration – 2 years part time.

Entry requirements – You will be expected to be in relevantemployment and have the support of your employer. Desiredentry qualifications include; an A level, BTEC Award or anNVQ Level 3 in an appropriate subject. Alternatively you canapply if you have the relevant work experience.

About the course – This course is aimed at developingbusiness and management skills for people in either paid orvoluntary employment. These skills are vital to successfulmanagement across a range of sectors. You will be expectedto attend college on day release from work and you will learnthrough tutor led lectures and tutorials as well as workshops.You will also be expected to undertake substantial work basedlearning projects and home study of about 8 hours per week.Units on the course include; personal development, theorganisation, the customer and the competitive environment,managing financial resources.

Further progression – This course emphasises the tacticaland operational aspects of business management. Thecourse provides a foundation of good practice in problemsolving, analysis and managing in business. This qualificationoffers you the opportunity to progress onto the BA (Hons)Business Management at the University of Teesside.

Foundation Degree in Project Control*

Level 5

Duration – 2 years part time.

Entry requirements – You will be expected to be in relevantemployment and have the support of your employer. Desiredentry qualifications include; an A level, BTEC Award or anNVQ Level 3 in an appropriate subject. Alternatively you canapply if you have the relevant work experience.

About the course – This course is aimed at developingproject control skills and techniques for people across a rangeof project centred sectors. These skills are vital to ensure thatprojects are delivered on budget and within time constraints.

You will be expected to attend college one day per week from12.30pm – 8.30pm and you will learn through tutor led

As part of thecourse you will be expected to undertake a substantial work-based project and cover areas such as; communications andthe organisation, business context and results, strategy andchange in the business environment, principles of projectmanagement, risk management, quality management, changeand configuration management, project planning, managingpeople and project monitoring and control.

Further progression – This course emphasises the tacticaland operational aspects of project control and produces abasis of good practice from project inception through toclosure. On successful completion of this qualification youhave the opportunity to progress onto a relevant Honoursdegree at the University of Teesside.

Chartered Management Institute (CMI)

(CMI) Diploma in Programme and Project Management

Level 4 (including NVQ Level 4)

Duration – 1 year part time.

Entry requirements – You will need a level 3 qualificationand be working in a management role.

About the course – This course is aimed at developing theknowledge, understanding and skills which are necessary tofunction as a project manager in any organisation. Thiscourse is a dual qualification which is ten modules deliveredon a day release basis. In addition, if you are in amanagement role, there is an opportunity to complete theNVQ Level 4 in Management. The modules covered in thiscourse include; business context, principles of programmeand project management, risk management, qualitymanagement, change and configuration management,managing people, programme and project planning,monitoring and control and an integrative assessment. Inaddition to attending college you will be expected to devote an equal amount of time for self-directed study for assignment work.

Further progression – This Diploma can be used as a routeonto higher generic management qualifications, progressingup to the MBA at the University of Teesside.

(CMI) Diploma in Management and Leadership

Level 5 (including NVQ level 4)

Duration – 1 year part time.

Entry requirements – You will need to be working in amanagerial or leadership role with a level 3 qualification.

About the course – This course is a dual qualification where you have the opportunity to take two separate butcomplementary qualifications in one. Management trainingand development will help you to broaden your knowledgeand understanding and fully realise your managementpotential, so as to develop your career in your chosen field.Assessment is a continuous process by completingassignments. The modules you will study include; human resources, operational management, informationmanagement, financial management and marketing. This course can either be undertaken at college one day per week or via distance learning.

Further progression – This course can lead you on tovarious management career paths. Alternatively if you wish to continue studying, you may want to complete the level 7Strategic Leadership and Management qualification, whichcan take you straight on to the MBA programme. This isoffered at the University of Teesside.

(CMI) Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership

Level 7 (including NVQ Level 5)

Duration – 1 year part time.

Entry requirements – You need to have one of the following;a management qualification at level 5 or above, a businessmanagement degree or extensive experience as a manager.

About the course – This course will help you broaden yourknowledge and understanding of management. You will studynine units, the modules include; develop the management andleadership roles to meet strategic objectives, manage thestrategic performance of teams, financial planning andbudgeting, manage business challenges, plan, implement andevaluate a work based project, information management andhuman resource and strategic marketing, planning andbusiness continuity. This is a dual qualification where youhave the opportunity to take two separate but complementaryqualifications in one. This course can either be undertaken atcollege one day per week or via distance learning.

Further progression – Masters degree in BusinessAdministration with the University of Teesside. If you havecompleted this course, then entry on to the second year ofthe MBA may be possible.

Institute of Operations Management (IOM)

Diploma in Operations Management

Level 5

Duration – 2 years part time.

This qualification will help you becomea reporter with a local weekly or daily newspaper. The collegehas a regional, national and international reputation for trainingjournalists. The modules you will study are; practical journalism,media law, public affairs, shorthand, news video production andonline journalism. You will be expected to be in college fourdays a week with the Fridays being used for work experience,directed study and research. During the course you will sitnational examinations in journalism, media law and publicaffairs. These exams are set externally and are moderated bythe NCTJ. About the course – This course is for you if you teach ortrain in the post-compulsory sector and already have a cert edor PGCE or equivalent and you are wishing to study for adegree related to key issues and real life experience of yourown practice. You will study the following modules; issues inpost compulsory education, issues in professional learningand development, research methods and critical enquiry. Ifyou are studying for the diploma you will learn by attending athree hour class per week at the college. In the final year youwill be required to attend classes at the University ofSunderland. You will also need to commit approximately eighthours of home study a week. Each module has a writtenassignment, although sometimes this may be accompanied bya presentation, poster display or seminar paper. The final yearcomprises of three modules with the option of a dissertationto achieve honours.

Duration – 1 year part time.

Entry requirements – You need to have native speakercompetence in English and a degree or 2 A Levels in anappropriate subject. The tutor will discuss your qualificationsbefore completing an application.

About the course – This course prepares you for the TrinityCollege London Certificate in TESOL which is the first levelqualification for working in this profession. In addition toattending the college you will need to be observed and teachin ESOL classes during the day. You will also need to dosome home study which will be approximately 8-10 hours aweek. The modules include; awareness of the Englishlanguage and its phonology, teaching and learning strategies,a foreign language (new to you), ESOL materials andteaching practice. You will need to complete all requirementsfor this course and you will be interviewed by your moderatorat the end of the course. The major component is assessedteaching practice, assignments include; learning an unknownforeign language (new to you), profile of a learner, languageawareness and phonology quiz and evaluation of materials.

City and Guilds V1 Verifiers Award

Level 4

Duration – 1 year part time.

Entry requirements – You must have the following; D32 and D33 or A1 and your role includes; evaluating the internal assessment process, monitoring and reviewinginternal assessment audit systems and carrying out externalquality assurance requirements. If you would like to becomean NVQ trainee internal verifier you must be registered withan assessment centre and have appropriate quality assurance experience.

About the course – This V1 award replaces the D34 and itqualifies you to work as an internal verifier within yourvocational area. You should be able to fully achieve thefollowing modules; operate and evaluate internal assessmentand quality assurance systems, support assessors, monitorthe quality of assessor performance and meet external qualityassurance requirements. You can work at your own pace. Youwill need to access in total 7 hours of tutorial support and afurther 2 hours for assessment and verification of yourcompleted portfolio. You will need to spend about 40 hoursassembling your portfolio. A wide variety of assessmentmethods are used including professional discussions, writtenquestions, natural observation and product evidence. You willbe required to keep in contact with your primary assessor.

City and Guilds Learning and Development

Level 4

Duration – Flexible.

Entry requirements – You must be in a teacher/trainer roleand to be able to produce evidence and written assignments.

About the course – This course will satisfy the Governmentdesire to have all teachers in the Learning and Skills Sector tohold a suitable teaching qualification. This course includes;contribute to the learning within the organisation, evaluate anddevelop own practice, design learning programmes, agreelearning programmes with learners, manage the contributionof other people to the learning process, create a climate thatpromotes learning, evaluate and improve learning anddevelopment programmes either at level 2 or 3, identify thelearning and development needs of the organisation, identifyindividual learning aims and programmes. Then, four optionalunits from the following; prepare and develop resources tosupport learning, enable group learning, support learners bymentoring in the workplace, support and advise individuallearners, monitor and review progress with learners, respondto changes in learning and development, provide learning anddevelopment in international settings, plan how to providebasic skills in the workplace, introduce training for basic skillsin the workplace, assess candidates using a range ofmethods, assess candidates’ performance throughobservation, or conduct internal quality assurance of theassessment process.
