Higher levels of automation – building in resilience

They are to act as a guide and crosscheck for the safety assurance and oversight of the human performance aspects of the design, development, transition and in service operation of ATM automation. They need to be considered in their totality, as they are inter-dependant and are not intended to be used sequentially. They should also be considered recurrently through life from initial concept design through to decommissioning.

• IFATCA embraces more technology to support the operators • Automation means different things in different parts of the world • Distraction versus involvement in processes (building in resilience) • Enhance the system capabilities and performance • Liability changes immensely with more technology - at the same time the models to understand the 'new system’ remain the same • IFATCA promotes the human centred approach - you have to involve us in the processes
