A Cicada is one to two inches long.

The insect has long wings for flying.

The Cicada also has five eyes !The eyes can be red, white, blue, yellow, gray or brown.

America has different kinds of Cicadas.

Some Cicadas live underground for a very long time. One group of Cicadas went underground 17 years ago. Was that before you were born ?

These Cicadas will return this summer.

Cicadas live in groups. Each group lives in a different area of the U.S.

This year’s big group lives on the East Coast. Most Cicadas will be from Maine to North Carolina.

Cicadas may cover the streets and buildings.

People may also see the Cicadas in other places. People may hear the insects too !

The male Cicadas move specialmuscles. They make a loud sound to call the females.

The female Cicadas like the sound.

Some people do not like the Cicada’s sound.

The sound can be loud, like thunder !

But do not be afraid of Cicadas. They will not hurt people. They will not bite or sting.

Watch for Cicadas when the weather is warm. They will crawl out of the ground.

Female Cicadas will lay eggs in tree branches.

The adult Cicadas will live only a few weeks. We will not see them after September.

The Cicada eggs will hatch after six weeks.

The young Cicadas will drop from the trees. They will go to live underground. They will rest and grow larger.

See you again in 17 years, little Cicadas !

UNDERGROUND

Cicadas live underground for many years. They dig a hole one to eight feet deep.

The young Cicadas drink juice from underground roots. After years of rest, they dig to the surface.
