Korte Earns Bidfor State Contest

Moose Brother Kent Korte’s son and Moose Brother Nick Korte’s Brother, Colin, a Highland High School se-nior, not only captured the Illinois High School Association Collinsville Bowling Sectional title, but he also carved out the highest six-game series in the entire state out of the four sectionals when he fired a 1,470 at Camelot Bowl in Collinsville. Korte’s 1,470 equates to a jaw-dropping single-game average of 245 and bested Hillsboro senior Ryan Rob-inson (1,440), the Collinsville Sectional runner-up, by 30 pins. Korte’s state-topping sectional performance also was 45 pins above Lincoln-Way West (New Lenox ) senior Eric Ullian’s sectional runner-up effort of 1,425, which was shot at the Plainfield North Sectional. In the morning session, Korte rolled impressive as-cending games of 213, 256 and 276 for a 745 series. His 276 third game tied for the third best single game of the entire slate of games shot at the Collinsville Sectional. He came back nearly as strong in the afternoon with stout games of 267, 226 and 232 for a three-game set of 705. His 267 also ranked among the top five. And, as a well-deserved capper for his senior season, Korte  received  the honor  of  competing on  the  final  two days of the prep bowling season, as well as his last two days of his prep bowling career, when he competed at the IHSA Boys State Bowling Finals Tournament at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon. He finished 35th out of 127 competitors, with a 12-game series of 2,530, which was good for a 210.833 average. Despite missing the cut for state, Highland junior Brandon Munie, son of Moose Brother Larry Munie, had a noteworthy 1,253 series and high games of 235, 234, 223 and 214.

Moose-Ings Special thanks to Dave Schwend, Gary Werner, Chris Cooper, Chris Schwend and Red E Mix LLC for providing the mett sausage at our February 27 meeting. Thanks to Jean Wirz for preparing it! Meeting January 23 - Queen of Hearts - Randy Manley; 50-50 - Brendan Bargetzi; Birthday - Neal Niggli. Thanks to Brother Jared Klaus and Sam’s Pizza for hosting our annual Valentine’s Sweetheart Night on February 13. Congratulations to new member, Scott Clark, who bowled 300 at Poplar Junction on September 13, 2016 and 300 at Hank’s Bowl on January 19, 2017. Thanks to Brother Bruce Bellm for hosting Moose Night Out at the Highland Country Club on a wintry night on January 14. Please wear your Moose shirts when attending the Lunch Bunch and Moose Happy Hours in addition to MAD Thursdays - get the word out!

And now, you know! A “Shot” of Whiskey: In the old west, a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a “shot” of whiskey. The Whole Nine Yards:  American  fighter  planes in WW2 had machine guns that were fed by a belt of cartridges. The average plane held belts that were 27 feet (9 yards) long. If the pilot used up all his ammo he was said to have given it the whole nine yards. Buying the Farm: This is synonymous with dying. During WW1 soldiers were given life insurance policies worth $5,000. This was about the price of an average farm so if you died you “bought the farm” for your survivors.

From the GovernorGreetings Brothers, With recent temperatures hovering around 70 degrees, it looks like we’ve lucked out with another mild winter. Hopefully the pleasant winter weather doesn’t come back to haunt us in the spring. The meat shoot will be here before we know it and everyone knows that a warm spring day will provide a significantly larger turnout. Mike and Tim Elliott have taken over as co-chairs and if they only have half the success that Wayne Sackett and Wayne Marti enjoyed, we will continue to have an outstanding event. Please remember to start collecting old clothes from your friends and family; the annual clothing drive at Langhauser Sheet Metal is on March 4th. Finally, thanks again to Sam’s Pizza for hosting our sweethearts night on the 13th. We had a large group in attendance and the buffet was terrific, as usual. Best Regards, Jon
