May is Mental Health Awareness Month

The National Alliance on Mental

Illness created the StigmaFree

reason. Stigma can even come from an

internal place, confusing feeling bad

with being bad. NAMI’s three steps

for being StigmaFree are:

1) Educate Yourself and Others

2) See the Person, Not the Condition

3) Take Action.

Highlands Area Community Cabinet

The Highlands Area Community Cabinet is a parent,

student and resident group collaborating with the sole

purpose of communicating and addressing issues, creating

solutions and establishing programs in order to improve

the quality of life of those residing in the Highlands area.

Whether you grew up here, own a business here or

currently reside in the community, you are welcomed to

bring your ideas, resources and volunteerism to the table!

Let's change the things we can ... together!

Next Meeting:

When: 12:15p-2:15p, Wednesday May 10th, 2017

Where: Generations House of Worship,

*If any of our enrolled families would like to attend this

and need transportation, please call the center.

Highlands School District News:

*We are in the process of planning summer field

trip/s. We would love to include everyone, but

with limited tickets & funding we just cannot do

so. Therefore those families who are active

participants will be given priority. Please make

sure to schedule and keep your home visits and

attend weekly play groups & other center events.

*Because we are an educational program, we

cannot condone older children being taken out of

school for any field trips. We will have other fun

events during summer break in which the older

children can attend.

Memorial Day is a day of

remembrance for those who

have died in our nation's

service. Please take a moment

this Memorial Day to remember

the brave men and women who

have sacrificed their lives.

*Field Trips*

Community Voices

Why should you be involved in Community Voices?

Parents are the best spokespersons and make the

strongest case for services, prevention programs,

and community change.

Parents have hands-on experience that gives them

authority to make decisions about programs that

serve families.

Parents get support and information at the

meetings that they may not otherwise receive.

Parents can build on leadership and grow

further in the Family Support movement.

Community Voices parents are recognized as

leaders and called to speak at conferences and

public events on behalf of families.

What is Parent Council?

Parent Council is a governance body in place at

the Center to demonstrate the principles of family

support. Parent Council involves parents as members

and at least one center staff as equal partners. Their

job is to identify, design, develop, implement and

evaluate the activities, services and programs of their

Center.

Parent Council works with Center Staff to col-

laborate with field trips and other activities. Parent

Council may hold fundraisers to raise money to help

defray the costs for field trips.

We are on Facebook! Search for Highlands Family

Center Parent Council, or contact Miss Krystle if you

would like to be added, as it is a private group.
