Pop Tabs for Ronald McDonald House

Keep on saving the pop tabs! Thanks so much for saving pop tabs for the St. Charles Golden K Kiwanis Club’s project. The pop tabs are taken to Delnor Hospi-tal.  They, in turn, give them to Ronald McDonald House Charities. The Ronald McDonald House provides a home for families of seri-ously ill children who receive treatment at nearby hospitals.  There are several in the Chicago area but the one most recently completed is in Winfield, near Central DuPage Hospital.  Amazing how all those little pop tabs together can raise enough cash to help build and main-tain needed housing.  You can bring pop tabs to the church at anytime – if you have just a few, put them in the little green bag in the hutch outside the office.  Or if you have a bunch, put them in my mailbox in the office.  They are always welcome, and this is a never-ending project, reaching to infinity and beyond...thank you!  -Pat Kitner

MEAL MINISTRY If you could provide an occasional meal for a church member, please contact Patti Molloy at [email protected] Mary Lou Bracken at [email protected] or sign upon the Parish Nurse bulletin board.

Thank you all so much for the food, fellowship, cards, calls, and words of support during Wilson’s illness and passing. You all made a very difficult time much easier to bear. Words simply can’t express how much your kindness meant to us. We are deeply grateful and humbled to be part of such an amazing & gracious church family.Tracey, Lauren & Spencer Mohr

Gale Mack, in her own words: My earliest memories of quilting came from when, as a child, I played under my grandmother’s large quilting frame in her farmhouse in Alabama.During WW II she made the Blue Butterfly quilt for me, using scraps of material from family clothing that had been made from flour and seed sacks. Grandmother let me pick out the scraps for the butterflies. I still recognize the scraps in the quilt, and I remember who wore the dresses that provided the parts for my quilt. Two of the scraps came from dresses that I wore. The hand quilting done by my grandmother was just exquisite. In the 1980’s I started to make small wall hangings and Christmas tree skirts. My first bed size quilt is the Ha-waii Floral one, done in the stained glass method. I drew simple flowers, matching the flower to the ones that are in the framing of each block. It took several years for me to complete this quilt.I have since become faster and now I can usually finish two to four quilts each year. Most of them are made as gifts to family members. (I borrowed some of them back for this display.) The only one that I also took years to finish is the Iris quilt. One reason that it took so long is because, like the Hawaiian quilt, it is all hand work. Each quilt presented new challenges. Most of the chal-lenges were met with the help of other quilters, especially my forever friend Suzanne Driver and good friend Barba-ra Vlack. Both are quilters extraordinaire. They have the patience and take the time to help novice quilters.I always have at least two quilts in progress and mate-rial and ideas for several more. Through the years I have bought fabric across the United States. There is a saying among quilters that, “She who dies with the most fabric wins.” Not really wanting to “win,” I went through my stash of fabric and donated and helped make more than 800 pillowcases (requiring 800 yards of material) for Children’s Hospitals in Florida and North Carolina. Most of these quilts are my designs, but I have them machine quilted. I do not sell my quilts, however I have donated several to charities for auction.I hope that you enjoy looking at these quilts half as much as I enjoyed making them.

At the May gathering of Novel Approaches the group chose the books for 2015 and 2016. Titles, Dates and Locations are listed below. Please sign up on the Congregational Life bulletin board. Hope you will join us!

November 13 – “All Our Names” Dinaw MengestuA sweeping, continent-spanning story about the love between men and women, between friends, and between citizens and their countries, All Our Names is a transfix-ing exploration of the relationships that define us. Fleeing war-torn Uganda for the American Midwest, Isaac begins a passionate affair with the social worker assigned to him. But the couple’s bond is inescapably darkened by the secrets of Isaac’s past: the country and the conflict he left behind and the beloved friend who changed the course of his life—and sacrificed everything to ensure his freedom. From acclaimed author Dinaw Mengestu, here is a love story for our time. You are invited to Susan & John Rodgers’ home at 2018 Bridle Court, St. Charles.

January 22 – “Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit” Jeanette WintersonWinner of the Whitbread Prize for best first fiction, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit is a coming-out novel from Winterson, the acclaimed author of The Passion and Sexing the Cherry. The narrator, Jeanette, cuts her teeth on the knowledge that she is one of God’s elect, but as this budding evangelical comes of age, and comes to terms with her preference for her own sex, the peculiar balance of her God-fearing household crumbles. Our discussion will be held at the home of Rich & Nancy Doerr. They live at 4206 Prestwick Court, St. Charles.March 18 – “How Green Was My Valley” Richard Llewellyn

2015-2016Novel ApproachesWinner of the National Book Award in 1940 and the basis for the Academy Award Best Picture film of the same name, How Green Was My Valley is full of memorable characters, richly crafted language, and surprising humor. Huw Morgan remembers the days when his home valley was prosperous, verdant, and beautiful—before the mines came to town. The youngest son of a respectable mining family in South Wales, he is now the only one left in the valley, and his reminiscences tell the story of a family and a town both defined and ruined by the mines. Huw’s story is both joyful and heartrending—a portrait of a place and a people existing now only in memory. The Ball’s have invited us to their home this evening, 43W213 Whirlaway Court, Elburn.

May 13 or 20 – “The Blind Assassin” Margaret AtwoodThe Blind Assassin opens with these simple, resonant words: “Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge.” They are spoken by Iris, whose terse ac-count of her sister’s death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental. But just as the reader expects to settle into Laura’s story, Atwood intro-duces a novel-within-a-novel. Entitled The Blind Assassin, it is a science fiction story told by two unnamed lovers who meet in dingy backstreet rooms. When we return to Iris, it is through a 1947 newspaper article announcing the dis-covery of a sailboat carrying the dead body of her husband, a distinguished industrialist. Brilliantly weaving together such seemingly disparate elements, Atwood creates a world of astonishing vision and unforgettable impact. Our last gathering for the year will be at Ken & Debby Graham’s home, 509 15th Court, St. Charles.

[email protected] FOR THIS YEAR FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL - PASSING ON GOD’S LOVE THE VOTES ARE IN! On Sunday October 4th dur-ing Jr. Worship, everyone got to vote for the animal through Heifer International our Sunday school would like to purchase using our offering collected from now through December 20th. After being given the choice of sheep, goat, llama, heifer (cow), water buf-falo, or bees, the animal with the most votes was……. sheep. It was close with the bees getting 11 votes and sheep getting 12. Then the kids voted to have as a goal to purchase 6 sheep. Now math came into play. How much would 6 sheep cost at $120 each? Could our of-fering from now through December 20th be enough to purchase 6 sheep? We all agreed we will work hard to reach it. Blessings from our church community are on our side too. Last spring Richard and Grace Caldwell donated a big bag of coins to our fall Sunday school mission project that they had collected. When counted it totaled $121.60!!! We are already able to purchase 1 sheep!! Thank you Richard and Grace!!! Check out the thermometer on our bulletin board in the Sunday school hallway to see where we are.In November during Jr. Worship we will discover just how a sheep will help the family that receives it.For more information on Heifer International and how they work throughout the world to “have power over hunger and poverty” visit their website at www.heifer.orgPSALM READERS: We again look forward to having as many students from our Sunday school sign up to read a Psalm. The only requirement - being able to read. The sign ups are posted on the bulletin board in the Sunday school hallway. If your child would like to give it a test at the pulpit, please let Tassie know. We can meet after a worship service at the pulpit to get a feel for what it is like to be up there.ACOLYTES: These are the 2 students who light our candles on the altar each week. If your child would like to try this, but may need a little encouragement, please feel free to sign them up and walk down the aisle with them.“No matter who you are or wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.”Blessings,Tassie Brautigam

WHAT’S NEW IN THE LIBRARY

The focus this month is on Chautauqua and highlights from the experiences shared by members of our congregation. Chautauqua Institution is a non-profit adult education center located in Chautauqua, New York, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Reverend Doctor John Rodgers and Susan have shared numerous experiences there with church members and friends over the years. This month in the library you will find a CD of the morning devotional services for Week Eight. The minister for the week was the Reverend Doctor Anna Carter Florence, Professor of Preaching at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. She is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA). With the CD is a list of sermon titles and scripture texts. I encourage you to read the scriptures preceding listening to each sermon. Also, there are two CDs focusing on the Middle East which was the theme for Week Eight. The programming brought together the brightest thinkers and doers in global affairs for a weeklong inquiry to further understand this troubled region. The two presenters on Wednesday, August 19, discussed Iraq. On Friday, August 21, the speakers focused on Iran and U.S. Relations. Chautauqua also focuses on programming for preschool children through high school. The Young Readers program selection for Week Eight was the Young Readers edition of Malala Yousafzai’s memoir ‘I Am Malala’, How One Girl Stood Up for Education, Was Shot by the Taliban and Changed the World. On the library table are two copies of ‘I Am Malala’, one for our youth, ten and older, and one for adults. I suggest families consider reading and discussing together the book. After reading the book, if you are interested in talking about the story with a group of families, please let me know.Thank you for your interest and support of a new format for this month.
