January Presidents Message
Dressage is now the fastest growing equestrian discipline in the U.S. and HDS is growing right along with it. Did you know that HDS is the largest dressage Group Member Organization in Region 9? Those of you who have been involved with HDS over the past years have witnessed an impressive expansion of competitions and educational opportunities for club members. In 1996, HDS sponsored only two shows and an annual awards banquet. In 2014, HDS will offer an ambitious schedule of TEN major events including seven competitions, a Region 9 clinic with Jeremy Steinberg (USEF Dressage Youth Coach), an HDS Educational Symposium with USDF Hall of Famer Anne Gribbons and Olympic rider Christine Traurig and the HDS Annual Awards Banquet. The competitions include the 4th annual CDI, the SWDC/USDF Region 9 Championships, the Schooling Show Championships and four other Recognized Level 2 and 3 shows.
The story behind this phenomenal growth comes down to three things: visionary leadership, steel nerves, and financial resources. Special kudos go to past HDS President and visionary Kathy Jones, who led HDS in 2011 to host the first-ever CDI (international show) in the region. The “steel nerves” component is necessary because our events are big and complex endeavors with a fair amount of risk involved. The third component, financial resources, is increasingly essential to grow our portfolio of events to provide members with new opportunities. HDS hopes you will continue to see the value of being a member and contributing to the club. Kim Parker, the HDS Advertising/Sponsorship Chair, is presenting HDS to new sponsors and advertisers who may like to market their products or services to our members. If you know a company or person who may be interested in partnering with HDS, please let Kim ([email protected]) or I know. Networking is the best way to find like-minded people and organizations. Every dollar makes a difference so we hope members will continue sponsoring a show class or level, buying an ad, etc. in honor of your barn, trainer or in memory of a beloved equine partner. New resources will help advance our sport in Region 9 and increase the opportunities available for all of us in 2014 and beyond! Leslie R.

Learn from two of the top Dressage Professionals in the US! An Olympic rider and an FEI 5* judge will lead the symposium!
Anne Gribbons is internationally known as an
FEI 5★ dressage judge. She served for ten years on the USEF Board of Directors, was a long time member and Co-chair of the USEF Dressage Committee and is a member of the USEF High Performance Committee and the USET National Advisory Board. In 2009, Anne was appointed Dressage Technical Advisor/ Coach by the USEF Active Athletes’ committee. She held the position until resigning in 2012 after the London Olympics. In 2013, Anne was inducted into the USDF Hall of Fame.
Christine Traurig got her start riding sale
horses at the Hannoverian Elite Auction in Germany. She has trained with former German National Coach Holger Schmezer and Johann Hinnemann. With long-time partner Etienne, Traurig was selected to represent the US Dressage Team at the Sydney Olympics winning the Olympic Team Bronze Medal. She was named the US Olympic Committee’s Female Equestrian Athlete of the Year in 2000. In 2013, Christine became a member of USEF’s Dressage High Performance Committee. Christine’s training philosophy uses classical, systematic development of the horse and rider.C

HDS on Facebook

There are several HDS entities on Facebook and it has become a bit confusing. This is
a quick recap of what is out there.
Facebook Pages: enable businesses, organizations and other entities to create an
authentic and public presence on Facebook. These pages are visible to everyone on
the internet by default. Anyone on Facebook can connect with these Pages by
becoming a fan of the Page. Page updates are received in your News Feed.
HDS has a Facebook Page: It is called Houston Dressage Society. It is administered
by the HDS board and updates are directly from HDS. Information about shows,
educational events and other HDS news will be posted here. This is the best way for
you to receive HDS information as it becomes available. This is not a place to post ads
for non-HDS events or items for sale.
While Pages were designed to be the official profiles for entities, such as celebrities,
brands or businesses, Facebook Groups are the place for small group communication
and for people to share their common interests and express their opinion. Groups allow
people to come together around a common cause, issue or activity to organize, express
objectives, discuss issues, post photos and share related content. Groups usually
require administrator approval for members to join and have the ability to post.
There are two groups related to HDS, and they both have the same name – Official
Houston Dressage Society. While one of the groups does have HDS board members
as administrators, the other does not. It is important to keep in mind that neither of
these groups are official HDS presences and items posted in either group are not
necessarily from the Houston Dressage Society. Please refer to each Group to see
what types of posts are and are not allowed. The Facebook Groups allow you to join an
online conversation about local dressage.
There is also a Facebook profile called Houston Dressage HDS Juniors which is
administered by the HDS Junior board member. This is a place for juniors to upload
photos and post events. No ads are allowed.

USDF Announces New Instructor/Training Program Facility -
The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce that Heidi Chote, CA, Kathryn Fleming-Kuhn, IL, and Katherine Simard, CO, have been appointed as new faculty members for the USDF Instructor/Trainer Program at Training-First Level. Each of these new faculty members is a USDF Certified Instructor through Fourth Level. In addition, Heidi is a USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medalist and USDF “L” Graduate; Kathryn is a USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medalist; and Katherine is a USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medalist, as well as a USDF “L” Graduate with Distinction.
The Instructor/Trainer Program workshops are an opportunity
to learn about classical theories of riding, training, teaching and lungeing and are open to anyone. “We are pleased to add these new members to our Instructor/Trainer Workshop Faculty, and we hope that by providing more qualified faculty, our program will continue to grow,” stated both Lilo Fore and Chris Hickey, co-chairs of the Instructor/Trainer Committee.

Heather Mason and Zar Triumph in FEI Intermediaire Freestyle at Adequan Global Dressage Festival 1 CDI W - Heather Mason (USA) and Zar finished on top of the FEI Intermediaire Freestyle, presented by Everglades Dressage, with a winning score of 72.275% at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AFDF). Second place went to Leida Collins-Strijk (NED) and West Side for a score of 71.150% and Austria's Katharina Stumpf rounded out the top three with a score of 67.000% on Nymphenburg's Love.
The FEI Intermediaire Freestyle was on the final day of the first week of the AGDF, sponsored by MTICA Farm and Everglades Dressage. Competition will resume on January 1619 with the AGDF 2 Dressage National and Gold Coast Dressage CDI. The feature event of the "Friday Night Stars" is the Wellington Wild West Show, with exhibitions such as trick riders, comedy acts, barrel racing, roping, Roman riding teams, and more for a full western rodeo atmosphere! The AGDF continues for 11 more weeks of top dressage competition through March 30. Read More

Improving Your Collective Dressage Scores – A lecture including a powerpoint presentation by William “Bill” Solyntjes USEF “S” Dressage Judge, is scheduled for March 22 – 23. The presentation titled How judges judge, determine score, adding criteria focusing on the essence, and factoring modifiers and biomechanics of the horse, gaits and rider. The presentation will take place in Lily Pond Estates, Kellyville, OK. The presentation along with demonstration will begin on March 22. Registration forms are available online. Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven Clinches Another Win at AGDF3, This
Time With Divertimento - Sweden's Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven continued her hot streak in Wellington on Thursday afternoon, winning the FEI Grand Prix with Divertimento during the third week of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF). Vilhelmson-Silfven took home two first place prizes with Don Auriello during the first week of AGDF and started off week three with equal success. Read More
Youth Rules at AGDF1 CDI W as Matute, Jr. and Lane have Top Scores - At today's competition at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF) CDI W, two young riders made their mark in the show ring. Sixteen-year-old Juan Matute, Jr. (ESP) rode Don Diego Ymas to the win in the FEI Intermediaire I presented by Chesapeake Dressage with a score of 70.579%. Megan Lane (CAN), at 22 years old, took the top placing in the FEI Grand Prix Special, presented by MTICA Farm, with Caravella and scored
68.980%.
The first week of the AGDF concludes tomorrow with a full schedule of national classes as well as the FEI Intermediaire Freestyle presented by Everglades Dressage. The AGDF continues for 11 more weeks of top dressage competition through March 30. Read More

HDS Offers a Great Opportunity
Question: Just what are Opportunity Classes?
Answer: A “division” developed by USEF to bring non members (horses, riders, owners) into recognized dressage shows. USDF and USEF memberships are not required and some show administrative fees are waived. Opportunity Classes have been around for several years, but have not received much notice in the Houston area.
Question: Why? Answer: Because non USDF/USEF members compete mostly in schooling shows where they don’t have the expense of all the memberships and fees associated with recognized shows. Question: What’s different now? Answer: In 2014, HDS is now permitting scores obtained in Opportunity Classes at recognized shows to be used in HDS Year End Awards for Schooling Shows, PLUS scores can be used to qualify for the HDS Schooling Show Championships. The Recognized Shows offering year-end score qualifying opportunity classes must register their show with the HDS Schooling Show Chair to be counted towards these awards. Be sure to ask each Show Manager about this before entering. The opportunity classes at the 2014 HDS Level 2 and Level 3 shows held at Great SW Equestrian Center will be part of this program. Question: What’s the advantage over attending schooling shows? Answer: You get scores and comments by USEF licensed officials. The judges will be “r”, “R”, or “S” judges. This gives the competitor feedback from more experienced judges and more “variety” of judges. Schooling shows typically have more limited budgets, and can’t bring judges from far distances around the country. Recognized shows can. Question: Where can you find these classes? Answer: Check the Prize Lists for recognized shows. Any Level 1, 2 or 3 Recognized Show can offer opportunity classes. Level 3 shows can offer Training level only. Level 2 shows can offer Training and First level. And Level 1 can offer Training, First and Second levels. Remember, new shows may appear throughout the season. In the Houston area, look at HDS Shows and Windy Knoll Shows for starters. So go ahead and take the plunge and “branch out”…..dressage is all about learning and getting out of your “comfort zone”.

USEF Announces the 2014 Schedules for Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Training and Observation Sessions and USEF Youth Dressage Observation Sessions - The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is pleased to release the schedules for the 2014 Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Training and Observation Sessions and 2014 USEF Youth Dressage Observation Sessions. Both the Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Program and USEF Youth Dressage Program are vital in creating a pipeline for future U.S. combinations to compete on the international stage.
The Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Training and Observation Sessions are open to all young horses between the ages of four and six. The goal of the training and observation sessions is for USEF Young Horse Coach Scott Hassler to work with the maximum number of up-and-coming talented young horses throughout the U.S. These clinics are open to all riders and applications can be found on the USEF website here.
High Performance Riders Participate in 2014’s First USEF Dressage Observation & Strategic Planning Session - The first USEF Dressage Observation & Strategic Planning Session of 2014 took place earlier this week at Havensafe Farm South in Wellington, Fla. Lead by Robert Dover, USEF Chef d’Equipe/Technical Advisor, the session provided training and strategic guidance for athletes as they look toward international competition and the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. The session featured 18 athlete/horse combinations over three days. Dover was able to work individually with each athlete/horse combination, striving to enhance training practices and assist athletes in achieving their competition goals. Athlete’s personal trainers/coaches were also invited and participated in the sessions. Read More

Simon and Brunello Named 2013 USEF Horses of the Year - At the USEF Year End Awards Gala Saturday night Abigail Wexner's Simon and Janet Peterson and Liza Boyd's Brunello were named International Horse of the Year and National Horse of the Year respectively. Voting was open to the public in December and both horses, already fan favorites, were rewarded for their tremendous results throughout 2013 with support from voters. Read More
USEF Announces Dates and Location for the USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship - The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is pleased to announce the USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship will be held June 2-5, 2014 at the USET Foundation Headquarters in Gladstone, N.J. This championship will also serve as the Selection Trial for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games U.S. Para-Equestrian Dressage Team. At the USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship and Selection Trial all horse-and-rider combinations will complete the FEI Individual Championship Test, the FEI Team Test, and FEI Musical Freestyle in their respective grade. January• New GMO officers review the GMO Handbook on the USDF Web site. • GMOs submit an updated list of officers to USDF office, with copy to Regional Director.• Nominations for Region 9 Teaching Excellence Award open for current year. Guidelines

February• PM Delegate and Executive Board nominations open. • February 10 – Deadline for competitions - submit completed Regional Championships
Host Site applications to Regional Director. • February 28 - Regional Board- current year regional travel budgets due to Region 9
Treasurer & Regional Director.
March• March 1 – “Riders Declarations of Intent” to qualify for the NAJYRC are due to the USDF
office. March 1 is the final postmark date for ‘Declarations of Intent” to be accepted with a $50 declaration fee. Postmarked declarations of March 2 through April 1st are accepted with a $300 declaration fee.
• End of fiscal year for USDF & Region 9.
April • April 1 – FINAL “Received by” date for the NAJYRC “Declarations of Intent” with fee.• April 15 – Deadline for PM Delegate nominations to the USDF office.• Mid to end of April –USDF Spring Executive Board Meeting.• April 30 – Applications to host a USEF Developing Programs and NAJYRC Qualifying

June• June 1 – Online voting for PM delegates goes live on USDF Web site. For a paper ballot,
request through the USDF office.• June 1 - Nominations for the Executive Board (President, Vice President, Secretary,
Treasurer, Regional Directors and At-Large Directors) due to the USDF office. Positions on the Executive Board in which elections are held stagger depending on the year.Nominations may also be made from the floor of the BOG at the Annual Meeting.
• June 1 – USDF Arts Contest opens. Youth & Adult. • Mid June - NAJYRC nominated entries due to USDF office.• End of June – NAJYRC definite entries due to USDF office, including final stabling fees.• June 30 – Deadline to vote for PM delegates on the USDF Web site. Ballot must be
returned to the USDF office, and postmarked no later than June 30.• USEF Rule changes proposed by individuals are due to USEF by June 1, and by

December [End of Nov. - beginning of December – Adequan/USDF Annual Convention]• December 1 – Initial GMO membership roster and matching dues are due in the USDF
office for the following membership year. These are considered late if received after December 1 and late fees will be applied.
• December 1 – GMOs must have their Annual GMO Affiliate Verification Form to the USDF office to remain listed on the USDF Web site.
