Events Survey Local UAS Juneau students were encouraged to participate in the FY17 Events Survey via Facebook and Twitter posts, email, and in-person requests between April 19th and May 5th 2017. 164 responses were submitted via Google Forms, resulting in 151 usable entries. Four responses were removed because the participant lived outside of Juneau and nine were removed due to duplicate entries. A nominal incentive prize ($25 gift card) was given to a random winner each day and announced on Facebook to encourage participation.

Approximately 50% of respondents are interested in attending music and film events. 40% of

respondents are interested in social and recreational events. Between 25% and 33% are interested in

attending comedy, lecture/speaker, game, dance, or community service events. Approximately 10%

of students are interested in attending family-friendly events.

Over 1/3 of respondents prefer rock, hip-hop/rap, pop, and indie/alternative music. Less than 1/4 of

respondents prefer country, folk/bluegrass, electronic, classical, jazz, or blues music.

Non-Event Goers (n=34) Just over 23% reported they are interested or

strongly interested in attending events at UAS in the

2017-2018 academic year. Out of this group, 62.5%

also reported that they are likely or very likely to

actually attend events in FY18. The vast majority

(70+%) of non-event attending students are either

neutral or negative about their interest in and

likelihood of attending events at UAS in FY18.

For the 8 students who reported interest and

likelihood of attending events in FY18, their barriers

include: Childcare (2), conflict with class

schedule/study time (2), not knowing when events

are held (2), no events of interest (1), and social

anxiety (1).

When asked what we can do to make events on

campus more appealing:

CAS CAS Assessments for Student Activities Programming and Student Leadership will be completed summer 2017.

Learning Outcomes: According to the survey respondents, attending our FY17 suite of events had a strong impact (majority agreeing or strongly

agreeing) on students: feeling connected to their campus; making new friends; having new experiences; and gaining new

perspectives. Attending events had a moderate impact (1/3 or more agree or strongly agree) on students: learning new skills and

making meaningful connections with other students. While attending events, the majority of respondents were able to balance

their time to accommodate academic success.

AL-I participants, UA scholars, and all freshman students, has been

collected since 2012 and shows promising possible trends.

Persistence appears to be higher for those participants completing

two semesters of AL-I versus one. Tier 2 AL-I completers also

appear to have a higher proportion of students retained than the

larger freshman class and possibly UA scholar freshman students,

excluding the 2015-2016 cohort. This data has not been tested for

statistical significance as the broader freshman class and UA

scholar group data cannot be compared to AL-I students directly.

The non-AL-I persistence rate data set is too broad for an accurate

comparison, as it encompasses freshman students from all three

UAS campuses. Plus, non-freshman AL-I students were included in the persistence data set for Tiers 1 and 2. These few students

would need to be removed from the data set for a more accurate comparison to be made.

Graduation

Data related to graduation is typically reported on a six-year completion rate time-frame. Since the AL-I program has only been in

operation since 2011, the official 6-year data is only available for the first year’s cohort (54.5%). Preliminary data is promising for the

2012 and 2013 cohorts, however, with 72.2% and 50% respectively of AL-I students, completing either Tier 1 or 2, having graduated

from an intended bachelor degree program within 4 years. Of the ten AL-I students seeking Associate degrees from the 2011-2014

cohorts, 5 have completed within 3 years, a 50% completion rate. Graduation rates have not yet been posted to the UAS website for

the boarder freshman 2011 cohorts, so comparison data is not currently available.

Satisfaction & Learning Outcome Survey (Tier 2)

At the end of Tier 2 all participants were asked to complete a survey on their AL-I experience, including a series of 5-point Likert-

scale questions relating to the learning outcomes of the program (results reported below) and open-ended satisfaction questions.

Statistically significant difference was not determined between the 2016 and 2017 survey groups.

SAB met weekly during the academic year, with anywhere from 5-16 members present. A fall retreat was held in addition to two

end-of-semester celebration events. The SAB constitution, developed over the summer of 2016, was adopted by the Board early in

Fall 2016. SAB members began using Slack as a communication tool in Fall 2016. Two SAB students and the Activities Administrator

attended NACA West in November 2016. Over 800 volunteer points were distributed to members for attending meetings or assisting

with events – this translates to well over 850 volunteer hours dedicated to bringing 40 quality events to the UAS campus. SAB does

not meet in person over the summer, but does communicate via email, Slack, and Facebook.

The Tier 1 group participated in the second annual door-to-door canned food drive on October 1, 2016, and delivered collected

items to the Southeast Alaska Food Bank. The day coincided with the grand opening of the newly expanded Food Bank, and AL-I

students got a tour of the building and information on food security in Juneau. The 2017 food drive will occur on October 7th.

The Tier 2 group hosted the 3rd Annual Day of Service on April 1, 2017. Over sixty volunteers (students and staff members) visited

eleven local non-profit organizations including: Perseverance Theatre, The Salvation Army, Juneau Symphony, Juneau Montessori

School, CBJ Landscape Maintenance, American Red Cross, Juneau Public Libraries, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Gastineau Human Society,

Douglas Public Library and The Bridge Adult Day Program.

The Tier 1 overnight Emerging Leaders Retreat was held at the Methodist Camp (September 16-17) and will be held at the same

location again in the fall of 2017 (September 8-9). The Tier 2 Empowered Leaders Retreat was held at the UAS Rec Center (January

28).

Recruitment for the Fall 2017 Tier 1 cohort is complete with 25 students accepted and 3 on a waitlist. Recruitment for the Fall 2017

AL-I Gold cohort is underway. The Tier 1 schedule has been finalized. The group will meet from 3:30pm-4:30pm most Fridays in J. P.

Hall during the fall 2017 semester.


FYE & New Student Orientation Committees The Student Activities Coordinator sits on both the FYE and New Student Orientation Committees (See FYE report).

Alaska Airlines Student Concert Series at UAS

The formal report to the Chancellor and Alaska Airlines was turned in on June 1, 2017. The report included highlights of SAB

involvement and learning, information on each event, promotion strategies, and a request to renew the series for FY18. Alaska

Airlines has renewed the MOU with UAS for the FY18 Concert Series. SAB is working to identify performers to bring to campus as

part of the series.


A committee of students, staff, and faculty meets monthly in the spring/summer and biweekly in the fall semester to plan this full-

day teach-in event. The 1st Annual P&P Symposium was held November 9th 2016 on the Juneau Campus and was a resounding

success. The full report is available on the Google Drive in the P&P Symposium folder. Faculty Senate has approved the 2017 date

(November 7th) and the event is on both the academic and faculty contract calendars. A 2017 “Save the Date” has been drafted and

will be shared out by the Chancellor’s and Provost’s Offices to all UAS staff and faculty.

Green Dot The Student Activities Coordinator co-presented two Green Dot Bystander Trainings for students on the Juneau and Sitka campuses

on September 18th and March 17th. Twenty-eight students between the two campuses were trained in FY17, many of whom also

participated in follow-up Green Dot Gathering events each semester. Two trainings, one each semester, are being planned for FY18.

In an effort to support and continue the current increased level of programming SAB has been conducting, Student Government

allocated an additional $6,000 for FY18 student staff personnel costs. The vacant Social Media & Promotions Specialist position will

be re-hired in August 2017 for the upcoming academic year. Staff are currently exploring ways to fill potential personnel gaps,

should they exist due to hours not being filled by the four core positions. Potential new positions may include: event photographer,

event techs to support set-up/tear down, and/or stipends for volunteer Chair positions. All staff members received evaluations at

the end of the fall and spring semesters.
