PresentationsYoungWarriorsTraciHubbert,PrincipalofAlternateEducationfortheschoolboard,introducedtrusteestotheYoungWarriorsprogram.YoungWarriorsisatherapeuticprogramthattakesplaceinaneducationalsettingfor9to12-year-oldswithself-regulationchallenges,learningdisabilities,and/ormentalhealthchallenges.BasedonAIKIDO,the“peacefulmartialart”teachesselfdefenseinadditiontorespectandcareforothers.TrusteesheardfromfouroftheparticipatingstudentsabouttheirexperiencesasparticipantsintheYoungWarriorsprogram.ResearchfromtheprogramhasshownthatYoungWarriorstudentsshowanincreaseinself-soothingandregulationskills,andadecreaseinlevelsofangerandfrustration.TheprogramtookplacelastyearatArchieStoufferElementarySchool,GravenhurstPublicSchool,SpruceGlenPublicSchool,LeslieFrostPublicSchool,andScottYoungPublicSchool.DistrictManagerofMentalHealthServicesCherylRoffesharedthatplansareintheworksforatleastsixadditionalschoolstobeaddedtotheprogramthisschoolyear.RoffewillbetakingovermanagementoftheYoungWarriorsprograminTLDSB.AdministrativeReports2017-2018StrategicActionPlanDirectorofEducationpresentedtotrusteesthenewlyrevised2017-2018StrategicActionPlan.Theplanisnowamoresuccinctdocumentthatwillbeaccompaniedbyspecificdepartmentactionplans.Theplanisdividedintothreesectionscorrespondingtothecommitmentmadeinthemulti-yearstrategicplanfocusingoninnovationandcollaborationforall,supportingthewell-beingofall,andvaluingthestrengthofeveryone’svoice.Eachfocusareahasalistofalignedactionplans.The2017-2018StrategicActionplan,aswellasindividualdepartmentplanswillbemadeavailableontheboardwebsite.

ElementaryEQAOAssessmentsReportSuperintendentsofLearningAndreaGillespieandKatherineMacIverprovidedtrusteeswithhistoricaldataoverafive-yearperiod.Theresultsfromthe2017grade3and6assessmentshowthattheboardhasincreasedinfiveofsixareas(grade3and6reading,writing,andmath).Juniormathistheonlyscorethatshowsa1%decline.Consequently,thiswillcontinuetobeanareaoffocusforprofessionallearning,studentmonitoring,andintervention.Theboardhasincreasedinfiveofthesixareasforstudentswithspecialneeds,witha3%decreaseingrade6mathwhichwillbeaddressedwithafocusonensuringaccommodationsforstudentstoclosethegap.SecondaryEQAOAssessmentsReportSuperintendentsofLearningBruceBarrettandKatherineMacIversharedOntarioSecondarySchoolLiteracyTest(OSSLT)andEQAOmathresults.FortheOSSLT,grade10appliedEnglishstudentsscoredat54%,whichis10%higherthantheprovincialaverage.AcademicEnglishstudentswere3%overtheprovincialaveragewitharateof95%.Studentswithspecialneedsalsoachieved3%abovetheprovincialaverage.Formath,grade9appliedstudentsscored9%(54%)overtheprovincialaverageinmath,but4%(79%)undertheprovincialaverageforgrade9academicstudents.Studentswithspecialneedsachieved10%overtheprovincialaverage.PolicyandProcedureReviewThefollowingpoliciesandprocedureswereapproved:HR-4045/4046 DisabilityManagement–EarlyInterventionandReturntoWorkPolicyandProcedureFutureMeetings
