Young Warriors is a therapeutic program that takes place in an educational setting for 9 to 12-year-olds with self-regulation challenges, learning disabilities, and/or mental health challenges. Based on AIKIDO, the “peaceful martial art” teaches self defense in addition to respect and care for others. Trustees heard from four of the participating students about their experiences as participants in the Young Warriors program. Research from the program has shown that Young Warrior students show an increase in self-soothing and regulation skills, and a decrease in levels of anger and frustration. The program took place last year at Archie Stouffer Elementary School, Gravenhurst Public School, Spruce Glen Public School, Leslie Frost Public School, and Scott Young Public School. District Manager of Mental Health Services Cheryl Roffe shared that plans are in the works for at least six additional schools to be added to the program this school year. Roffe will be taking over management of the Young Warriors program in TLDSB. Administrative Reports 2017-2018 Strategic Action Plan Director of Education presented to trustees the newly revised 2017-2018 Strategic Action Plan. The plan is now a more succinct document that will be accompanied by specific department action plans. The plan is divided into three sections corresponding to the commitment made in the multi-year strategic plan focusing on innovation and collaboration for all, supporting the well-being of all, and valuing the strength of everyone’s voice. Each focus area has a list of aligned action plans. The 2017-2018 Strategic Action plan, as well as individual department plans will be made available on the board website.
