This morning you can catch up on some rest, so today’s departure time is a nice and civilized 10:00am. It’s off to the explore the sites south and east of the city. First, we visit Thingvellir National Park (UNESCO), Iceland's greatest historical site and a place of tremendous geological interest. A short ride across fertile farmlands in the south reveal the stunning Gullfoss ‘Golden' Waterfalls where traversing a narr ow path provides close-up views of the thundering waterfall below. As the return journey back to Reykjavik begins, you will visit Friðheimar Horse farm and Geothermal Greenhouse. This region is the area in which many parts of Games of Thrones series is filmed, and is the perfect alternate or add on to the well trafficked Golden Circle route in and around Reykjavik. The north offers areas of extreme contrasts, bird life, flora, geothermal activity, geology and saga! The Lake Myvatn area is by many considered the most beautiful and at the same time, the most catastrophic place in Iceland. The highlights of out afternoon tour today stops at Goðafoss Waterfall, the pseudo-craters of Skutustadagigar and at the mystic Dimmuborgir (Dark Cities), formations full of lava-pillars that are rich of mystic sagas and tales. Day 6 – Saturday, November 18, 2017 Siglufjordur daytour Thanks to the opening of the mountain Tunnel in 2010, the historic herring-fishing town of Siglufjörður now makes a great d ay tour destination from Akureyri. The town of Siglufjörður is nestled in a dramatic fjord on the very edge of Iceland’s steep northern mountains. With lovingly restored old buildings, many Icelanders believe Siglufjörður to be the country’s prettiest town. On the way from Akureyri, pass Möðruvellir, famous from Icelandic Sagas. An historic 19th century church currently stands in the area. As you drive along, enjoy views of Hrísey Iisland, which is a bird sanctuary. Drive through beautiful Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord, and onto the Tröllaskagi (Troll Peninsula). Known as the “Icelandic Alps,” Tröllaskagi offers some of the highest mountains in Iceland; the views of steep mountains plunging to the black-sand coastline are breathtaking.

En route, yo u’ll pass through three mountain tunnels and alongside tiny fishing villages. Lunch will be in one of the villages. There you will be introduced to the history of the fishing industry and try Icelandic schnapps! Upon arrival in the town of Siglufjörður, visit the award-winning Herring Era Maritime Museum. Many Icelandic historians believe it was Siglufjörður’s herring “gold rush” of the early 20th century that helped bring modernization to the country of Iceland. Explore the museum’s three buildings and take in the history and significance of this rural Iceland outpost. Dinner is at leisure this evening. We suggest Rub 23!
