An Appetite for HealthAlexandra Lewin-Zwerdling Vice President for Research and Partnerships at the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation

As Americans age, one thing’s for sure: those over 50 don’t leave their health behind. A new study conducted by the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation and supported by Abbott underscores the importance of health and wellness for older adults. Researchers surveyed more than 1,000 adults over 50 for the study and found that 6 in 10 say their diet is more healthy than it was 20 years ago, and that 9 in 10 believe eating healthy is important to maintaining their health as they age. Not only that, the vast majority agree it’s never too late to make diet and lifestyle changes. That’s the good news. The more challenging news is that Americans over 50 report significant declines in their physical activity levels, and not unrelated, they also experience a decrease in energy that keeps them from accomplishing the things they want to do.

So what motivates older adults as they age? Not surprisingly, they want to preserve long-term health and prevent future problems. When it comes to health issues, Americans over 50 care most about cardiovascular health, muscle health and mobility, and energy and brain function. Weight becomes less important, yet it is still the primary driver of what this age group chooses to eat. Perhaps this is because they know their weight is linked to other health conditions or because it’s tangible and something that can be easily monitored over time.

Dear Friends of Four Pointes,

After nearly two and a half wonderful years with Four Pointes, I have made the difficult decision to transition out of the organization. I have genuinely appreciated my time working with the staff, board, community partners and volunteers who keep the organization moving forward. The opportunity to be inspired and motivated, at every turn, by each one of you has been a transformative experience for me. I know that Four Pointes will continue to grow and do great work on behalf of the people and community we serve.

I take away so many valuable life lessons with me. Four Pointes promotes the philosophy that we are never too old to set goals and live new dreams. These are more than words, these fundamental beliefs are what shape the very direction of our work as a nonprofit. The most visible component of our mission in action is the Wellness Center, and it is led by a team of bright, caring and dedicatedindividuals. It has been exciting to watch membership grow by 34% over the last few years as individuals embrace the culture of curiosity and growth that is Four Pointes. Every day I see members trying new things, stretching beyond their comfort zone, making improvements in their health, andgrowing as people. I see real connections being made, friendships that deepen with time, and a diverse mix of people who discover daily just how much they have to learn from one another. This empowering culture is now a part of me, and I will live it going forward.

I am equally proud of what we have accomplished through our Community Living Program over the last several years. Despite being the quiet, less visible component of our work, the services provided under the umbrella of this program are truly the very heart of our mission. This program has growntremendously as many of our friends and neighbors may need additional supportive services in order to remain in the community and Age in Place. Our amazing team of social workers, RN’s and Home Health Aides are out in the community every day, helping to ensure that older adults have the supports they need to live independently.

I hope our paths will continue to cross. Until then, thank you all for your kindness, encouragement, and wisdom.

5 Ways to Make Your Daily Walk More Fun (continued)

You can also do jumping jacks, walking lunges, squats — any bodyweight exercise you prefer. Plan to do one exercise ev-ery three to five minutes of your walk to get a good workout and keep it exciting.

4. Add Intervals to Your WalkWalking intervals — switching between slow-, regular- and fast-paced walking — will get your heart rate up while adding much-needed variety. The idea is simple: start with a slow pace, move to a regular to moderate pace and finishwith your fastest walking speed before slowing it down again.

You can format your intervals in a number of different ways:• Time: Walk slowly for three minutes, moderately for two minutes, fast for one minute, then start again.• Landmarks: Change your speed every time you hit a spe-cific landmark, with landmarks being trees, telephone poles, and house numbers — anything that’s consistent along your route.• Terrain: Boost your speed on short hills, to increase yourcardiovascular output and endurance, and take it back down to a moderate or slow pace between the inclines.• Music: If you are listening to music, pick up the pace every other song, or for the chorus of every single song.

5. Do Active MeditationMeditation provides a wide variety of benefits, including re-duced stress, anxiety, blood pressure, risk of depression and pain (physical and psychological). It also improves memory and brain functioning. While most people think of medita-tion as a seated practice, sitting cross-legged with their eyes closed in a quiet room, active meditation can provide the same benefits while incorporating movement.

There are a number of ways to enjoy walking meditation. The simplest requires nothing but taking notice of your breath and movement. When your walk starts, tune into your breath and start to pay attention to your steps. As you do, notice how your feet feel as they hit the ground; make note of any pain or discomfort in your body — but don’t judge or label it, just notice it. Find a comfortable breathing pattern, slowly breathing in and out, with a pause at the top or bottom of your breath. For example:

Breathe in for four seconds, hold for six seconds, breathe out for four seconds.

Look Forward to Your Walks AgainUse these ideas to make your favorite aerobic activity more fun and enjoyable.
