He began taking ying lessons at the age of 15, soloed at 16, and on his 17th birthday in 1972 he earned his private pilot’s license. You can do the math! As a senior in high school he learned that a hot car might be a chick magnet; but offering to y a girl to North Platte for a Coke won every time. His enthusiasm for ight was contagious and soon his mother, father, and brother also became pilots. The family bought an airplane and put in a grass strip at the farm. He was also instrumental in his wife and one daughter obtaining their licenses but does not recommend teaching your wife to y or back up a stock trailer. He graduated from Kearney State College in 1977 with a degree in business. While in college he was involved with the school’s sky diving club and parachuted six times before deciding it was stupid to jump out of a perfectly good airplane and became the club’s pilot instead. He always looked for a way to make his living in aviation. He bought his own airplane in order to build some tail dragger time and in 1981 his efforts paid off when he became an ag-pilot for Carl and Linda Hamit at Wallace Flying Service. He ew Ag-Cats for them for 23 years and then bought the business and changed the name to Wallace Aviation. It became a family business as his wife and all three of his daughters have been involved at one time or another. As you know by now the Airman of the Year, Stuart VanBoening, continued to y Ag-Cats, as well as owning and ying several other planes, including: a restored J-3 Cub, a Cherokee 180, a Super Cub, and a Citabria. Throughout his ying career, Stuart has helped ght many res by providing water drops for local re departments as well as the Fort Robinson re several years ago. In 1992, Stuart was awarded the William O. Marsh award for safety at the NAAA convention in Las Vegas. The award for safety came just in time as the following year he totaled an ag-cat due to wind shear proving that not every landing you walk away from is a good one. He had a few other minor incidents through the years but never had an injury. Stuart is a longtime member of NATA, attending every convention but one because of weather since 1981. He has also attended many national conventions. Several years ago when ag-pilots were aging and their numbers decreasing the NAAA promoted a campaign’ known as “Each One Train One”. Stuart took that to heart and over the next several years trained four pilots as Ag pilots; three of which are now members of NATA: Danny Dinkle, Chad Hendricks, and this year’s rookie Shane Moore. He has always emphasized safety and believes that a successful spray season is one in which every airplane is in the hangar, every pilot makes it home to his family, and he is still married. Stuart continues to operate Wallace Aviation today and in 2008 opened Wallace Air Repair. Employing 2 and ½ mechanics, it is a full-service shop for people planes as well as agricultural airplanes. He also nds time to farm with his brother, Steve ies his Super Cub whenever the weather is t and tries to spoil his grandchildren whenever he can. The 2018 Airman of the Year is Stuart VanBoening.

2018 Airman of the Year

This year’s NATA Airman of the year was born in southwest Nebraska where he, was raised on the family farm. As a boy his entire family was very involved in scouting and it was his involvement in a Boy Scout Explorer outing that began his fascination with aviation.

He began taking fl ying lessons at the age of 15, soloed at 16, and on his 17th birthday in 1972 he earned his private pilot’s license. You can do the math! As a senior in high school he learned that a hot car might be a chick magnet; but offering to fl y a girl to North Platte for a Coke won every time. His enthusiasm for fl ight was contagious and soon his mother, father, and brother also became pilots. The family bought an airplane and put in a grass strip at the farm. He was also instrumental in his wife and one daughter obtaining their licenses but does not recommend teaching your wife to fl y or back up a stock trailer.

He graduated from Kearney State College in 1977 with a degree in business. While in college he was involved with the school’s sky diving club and parachuted six times before deciding it was stupid to jump

out of a perfectly good airplane and became the club’s pilot instead. He always looked for a way to make his living in aviation.

He bought his own airplane in order to build some tail dragger time and in 1981 his efforts paid off when he became an ag-pilot for Carl and Linda Hamit at Wallace Flying Service. He fl ew Ag-Cats for them for 23 years and then bought the business and changed the name to Wallace Aviation. It became a family business as his wife and all three of his daughters have been involved at one time or another.

As you know by now the Airman of the Year, Stuart VanBoening, continued to fl y Ag-Cats, as well as owning and fl ying several other planes, including: a restored J-3 Cub, a Cherokee 180, a Super Cub, and a Citabria.

Throughout his fl ying career, Stuart has helped fi ght many fi res by providing water drops for local fi re departments as well as the Fort Robinson fi re several years ago.

He also fi nds time to farm with his brother, Steve fl ies his Super Cub whenever the weather is fi t and tries to spoil his grandchildren whenever he can.

The 2018 Airman of the Year is Stuart VanBoening.

High-Profile Glyphosate and Chlorpyrifos Trials Begin SoonTwo separate major legal challenges to the widely used pesticides glyphosate and chlorpyrifos will test how far the courts will go to restrict the products farmers can use. While the facts in each case differ, both are part of a push by activists to go around the EPA’s rigorous registration process for crop protection products in which crop protection manufacturers spend hundreds of millions of dollars ensuring their products are safe to workers, consumer’s diets, and the environment. The outcomes of the cases are important for the agricultural community because the courts could outright ban these products or impose fi nes on the manufacturers so steep it would no longer be viable for them to produce the product.

GLYPHOSATEThis week in California, the second major trial started to determine if glyphosate causes cancer. Much like the fi rst case, the trail concerns a groundskeeper who was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

In August of 2018, Monsanto was ordered to pay more than $289 million in damages to a groundskeeper who was diagnosed in 2014 with non-Hodgkin lymphoma after years of using Roundup and other Monsanto products containing glyphosate. A judge later reduced the damages to $39 million. Bayer, the new owner of Monsanto, continues to appeal the case.

This second trial is equally as important, because it will determine if the arguments against glyphosate can withstand legal scrutiny enough to set a precedent for the 1,600 other plaintiffs who claim glyphosate cased their cancer diagnosis.

In 2015, the World Health Organization stated glyphosate to be a “probably carcinogenic.” This prompted many of the pending 1,600 cases to be fi led. However, an investigation by the news agency Reuters later found key information that the pesticide does, in fact, not cause cancer in animals, and that information had been omitted from the report.

In 2016, the EPA affi rmed glyphosate does not cause cancer, and in 2017 a long-term study by the National Cancer Institute following 50,000 people over 20 years also showed no link between glyphosate and cancer.

CHLORPYRIFOSIn the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, judges are reviewing a decision made last fall by a three-judge panel of the Court in requiring the EPA to ban all tolerances for the insecticide chlorpyrifos. In a rare decision, the court granted the EPA’s request to rehear oral arguments in the case. Oral arguments are set to be reheard on March 26.

Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate insecticide that is used in more than fi fty fruit, nut, cereal and vegetable crops, and has been the subject of activist group attacks and controversy for many years. In October 2018, NAAA joined 27 other agricultural groups in an amicus brief in support of EPA’s petition.

“USDA disagrees with the ruling ordering EPA to revoke tolerances and cancel registrations for chlorpyrifos,” said Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue in a statement last year, arguing that “the decision appears to be based on a misunderstanding of both the available scientifi c information and EPA’s pesticide regulatory system.”

“The arbitrary, immediate, and total loss of this crop protection tool endangers agricultural industries and is expected to have wide economic impacts,” he added.
