HILARIO DURÁN TRIO

Hilario Durán is a mature piano virtuoso, who chooses the adventurous and orchestral approach to his instrument, influenced by his rich experience as composer and arranger. His trio with double bassist Roberto Occhipinti, the anchor of many classical, latin and jazz ensembles, and Mark Kelso, one of the world's best Latin drummers, fuses jazz with essential Cuban rhythms.

The Hilario Durán Trio's seasoned musicians bring both spirit and soul to musical expression and while playing together their talents are released with explosive force. A true working trio, they have toured extensively in the US with notable performances in Rochester, Cleveland, New Orleans and New York and also played at all Canadian jazz festivals as well as festivals in Japan, Mexico, Iceland, Italy, Cuba, the Netherlands and the UK.

HILARIO DURÁN

Hilario Durán Torres (pianist, band leader, composer, producer, arranger) was born October 10, 1953 in Havana, Cuba, where he studied music education at the Conservatory Amadeo Roldan. He joined the Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music in 1976, but when Arturo Sandoval formed his band in

1981, Hilario joined him and continued to work with him for the next decade as composer, arranger, and producer as well as playing both piano and keyboard. It was a collaboration that saw him often sharing international stages with outstanding musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Michel Legrand.

Known as one of the great Çuban pianists, Durán has been nicknamed “Con Tumbao” for his creative use of the tumbao repetitive bass figures. He toured throughout Latin America and Europe with his own group, Perspectiva, for several years, a period during which he also played piano on Jane Bunnett’s JUNO Award-winning CD, Spirits of Havana. In 1995, he decided to pursue a solo career, releasing the first of many successful recordings the following year.

He moved to Canada in 1998, where he has remained a key member of Jane Bunnett’s Spirits of Havana Afro-Cuban jazz band. He also continues to perform on concert stages and in festivals all around the world as leader of his namesake Hilario Durán’s Latin Jazz Big Band. The group was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2007 for From the Heart, featuring Paquito D’Rivera. Hilario is the recipient of 3 JUNO Awards and over a dozen National Jazz Awards as well as the prestigious Chico O’Farrill Lifetime Achievement Award.

ROBERTO OCCHIPINTI Roberto Occhipinti (bassist, producer, composer) was born on March 25, 1955 in Toronto, Ontario, into a musical family that includes guitarists Michael, brother, and his cousin David. He began studying at the University of Toronto under Thomas Monohan in 1972, and also regards Dave Young and Joel Quarrington as significant career mentors. He is widely regarded as one of Canada’s premier bassists, comfortable in a wide variety of musical contexts, and conducts successful careers in both classical music and jazz. Roberto has toured and recorded extensively with pianist Hilario Durán, saxophonist Jane Bunnett, and his brother Michael’s JUNO Award-winning band NOJO, performing at Canadian jazz festivals with the legendary saxophonist Sam Rivers, and “Soul Stew.” His own recording career began in 2001 with his nonet comprising Canadian and Cuban musicians, followed by a 2003 release featuring a 13-piece ensemble, and in 2006, an ambitious recording featuring 22 jazz musicians, string quartet, and the Globalis Symphony Orchestra. As a classical musician, Roberto Occhipinti has performed with virtually every classical music ensemble in Toronto and has been a member of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Hamilton Philharmonic, and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra. In the field of contemporary music, he was principal bassist with the Esprit Orchestra for eight years, a member of Arraymusic for more than two decades, and performed with New Music Concerts. As a producer, Occhipinti has worked on projects for the Gryphon Trio, Shurum Burum Jazz Circus, QuartettoGelato, Soul Stew, and Hilario Durán with whom he continues to collaborate. He has toured with EMI recording artist Gorrilaz and performed with Damon Albarn's Mali Music at the

Barbican in the UK. He has performed in concert for the BBC and MTV, and also served as music director, supervisor, and contractor for numerous feature films, live stage shows, and commercials. Roberto’s prolific output includes the JUNO-nominated 2009 releases A Bend in the River and The Almond Sorters by The Sicilian Jazz Project, co-lead by his brother Michael as well as producing Dave Young’s Mean What You Say.

MARK KELSO Originally hailing from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Mark Kelso has made Toronto his home for quite some time. Not only is he a skilled musician who plays drums and an assortment of percussion, but he is also a talented singer, producer and composer as well. He brings a rare excitement, a wealth of experience and a high degree of professionalism to every project he works with.

Mark’s ability to play a wide variety of musical styles has helped him become one of Canada’s most sought after drummers. An all around player, Mark has worked with diverse artists such as Gino Vannelli, Pete Townsend, Michael Bublé, Holly Cole, Peter Murphy (Bauhaus) John

Scofield, Amy Sky, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Donny Osmond, Dave Grusin, Shirley Eikhard, Hilario Duran, Paquito D’Rivera, Michel Cusson, The Montuno Police, Brian Hughes, Jane Bunnett, Soul Stew, Carol Welsman, Gordie Sampson, Mary Jane Lamond, Joe Sealy, John-Allen Cameron, Marc Jordan, Bruce Guthro, Jane Siberry and Shania Twain.

Aside from playing many TV and radio jingles and movie soundtracks Mark has also been featured in “Drums, ETC” “Canadian Musician” and “Modern Drummer” magazines. Mark has also been a featured clinician at the Montreal Drumfest and Cape Breton Drum Festival.

Mark endorses and is a featured clinician for YAMAHA Drums, PAISTE Cymbals, REMO heads and HEADHUNTERS drumsticks.

TOM ALLEN Tom Allen is a passionate music lover, storyteller, accomplished trombonist, writer and broadcaster and brings a wealth of knowledge to CBC Radio 2. Tom hosted Music and Company on Radio 2 for 10 years and then went on to host Radio 2 Morning. Prior to this, his weekly stories aired to a keen Ontario audience on CBC Radio One's Fresh Air and nationally on This Morning. He is a frequent onstage host for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and has brought his Classical Goodtime Variety

Show to orchestras across Canada. His cabaret The Bohemians in Brooklyn, with Patricia O'Callaghan, Bryce Kulak and his wife, the harpist Lori Gemmell was the surprise hit at the Young Centre Cabaret Festival in Toronto and was described as "slickly written" and "beautifully punctuated with songs." Tom has also had three books published, most recently The Gift of the Game, a reflection on hockey and the role the game plays in the life of a divorced parent. Allen studied at McGill University, graduated from Boston University and received his MA at Yale University. While looking for full-time work as a trombonist, he temped on Wall Street and cooked in a Mexican restaurant. One of his favourite musical memories is of joining 87 other trombonists on the first-base line at Fenway Park for the Boston Red Sox home opener in 1982. In 1987, he began touring with the Great Lakes Brass until he joined CBC Radio in Halifax.

The Esther Gelber Fund

The Canadian Music Centre is proud to announce a new commission funded by the Esther Gelber Fund. Hilario Durán's Concerto for Latin Jazz Trio and Orchestra was commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, thanks to the Esther Gelber Fund administered by the CMC. Performances of this commission will take place on April 29 and 30th, 2015 with the TSO when they salute the many facets of Pan American culture with a vibrant, percussion-sparked programme of Latin-American music. Cuban jazz piano legend Hilario Durán and his trio will take the spotlight for Durán’s own sizzling Concerto.

The Esther Gelber Fund is administered by the CMC and was created by sisters Nance Gelber, Patty Rubin, Judith Gelber and Sara Charney in 2007 to honour their late mother, Esther Gelber, a well-known Toronto arts supporter and philanthropist. The fund provides performing artists the opportunity to select and commission a composer of their choice whose original composition they will debut. Esther Gelber and her husband Arthur Gelber were both passionate about the visual arts, music, theatre and dance and became very active in the Toronto cultural scene with a number of organizations including COMUS Music Theatre of Canada, the National Ballet, and the Art Gallery of Ontario. “Our mother was a major supporter of new initiatives, and wanted artists to have the chance to create and perform new work,” said Patty Rubin, the second daughter of Esther Gelber, on the launch of the fund. “Torontonians are very generous in their support of the arts, and this has been particularly evident in the many “bricks and mortar” campaigns that are transforming the face of the city. Through the fund, my sisters and I hope to raise awareness that commissioning work is another great option for people who are interested in supporting the arts.” The first commission funded by the Esther Gelber Fund was by The Gryphon Trio. Wave, composed by CMC Associate Composer Gary Kulesha, had its world premiere on Thursday, November 5, 2009 when Music Toronto presented the Gryphon Trio with soprano Valdine Anderson in the Jane Mallett Theatre at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. The second commission was by The Art of Time Ensemble. Composed by Jonathon Goldsmith, it was performed at the Enwave Theatre on May 24 and 25, 2011. Commissioning a composer to write a piece doesn’t cost as much as you may think! If you would like to learn more about commissioning please contact Glenn Hodgins at 416 961 6601 ext. 301.
