JANUARY 2014 NEWSLETTER
PRESIDENT’S PROSE – DECEMBER 2013
Reflecting on all the wonderful events of 2013, I am happy to report that is was a very good year for our
club and for me personally – especially as I am very proud to have been named Club Person of The Year.
We have so many great club members who work really hard to ensure our club runs as smoothly as it does
which makes this award so very special. Thank you all for your support and encouragement.
In the November newsletter I wished everyone good luck in the swim thru over on Rottnest Island. Well,
there were only six of us but we made the most of a really nice swim. Congratulations to Maggie who
competed in this swim for the first time and enjoyed the excitement of a day on the island.
The month has flown by and we have officially finished training for the year and, on behalf of all the mem-
bers, I would like to extend a huge vote of thanks to our 3 coaches for all their efforts in designing different
and varied programmes for us to work at and also for turning up to supervise on evenings when they are un-
able to swim themselves. Head coaches Lesley and Claire have been joined this year by Liz, who is working
her way through the considerable task of becoming accredited.
Of course, you have all been bombarded ad infinitum with the exploits of our eldest daughter and fellow
club member, Ceinwen, in her year of exciting open water swims and our travels supporting her. Masters
W.A. nominated her in the ANZ W.A Sports Person of the Year awards and we had a great evening at the
grand ballroom at Crown Casino watching all the nominees being presented with medals and hearing about
their sporting endeavours. Not sure what we are in store for next year but I doubt that she can top this year’s
achievements.
For those who attended our Christmas party last weekend, you will be aware that our coaches chose Russel
Fowler as the Swimmer of the Year – an award he thoroughly deserves as he really has stepped up his train-
ing and competition commitments – without hindering his social involvement His acting skills were put to
the test on the night and he did a splendid and hilarious job as Father Christmas once again. Thank you to
Lynne and Andrew Duncan for letting us use their garden for the great “ocean” themed party.
The final gathering of the year was a sausage sizzle held on the lawn at Jan and David Pether’s beautiful
home overlooking the lights of the city. It was a lovely evening and a fitting end to a club year full of excep-
tional swimming and riotous good fun.
On behalf of the Committee I would like to extend the
very best of the festive season to everyone in the club
and to your families. Keep safe over the holiday sea-
son and we will see some of you back in the training
lanes on the 6th January.

Lynne and Andrew Duncan kindly hosted the 2013 Christmas Party. It was a beautiful night for
Santa to visit Maida Vale Masters and once again he thoroughly enjoyed himself. The Ocean
Theme for the party was embraced by members with some very interesting choices of attire.

cool off in the pool
Having fun….
Congratulations to Liz Bettridge who won
the President’s Award. And congratula-
tions to Andrea for the most innovative
attire. A lighthouse over a reef. A very
fetching outfit Andrea!
A ‘surprised’ and delighted
Russel Fowler who won the
Coach’s award 2013. No-one
was more surprised than
Russel….
Santa checking with Norma
to see whether she had been
naughty or nice.
Barbara must have been nice
as Santa showed her ALL the
presents she could choose
from.
Santa approved of Andrea’s
lighthouse and reef.
Not sure what Sandie said to
Santa but it certainly appears
to have surprised him….
Lots of kisses and cuddles for Santa.
He loves coming to Maida Vale Christmas parties...
At the Rehydration night at the Best Drop Tavern in December, Claire and Brian
both ordered the same meal. However—there was just a slight difference one
was ‘gluten free’. Can you spot which was which?

Once again we were blessed with a beautiful night for our end of year sausage sizzle. Thanks to David and Jan
Pether for hosting this event.
