It’s time to dig out your pinks and dig deep as the count down is on to the 2013 Belltrees Cricket Club Pink Stumps Spectacular.

After raising a massive $23,000 at last year’s social cricket match and family afternoon, the organisers are hoping for a bigger and better event this year to support the McGrath Foundation.

Not only will pink sprinkle over the local community, but cricket legend

Michael Slater will visit as special guest, to be interviewed by Scone’s very own cricket great and reporter Michael Pritchard.

The Pink Stumps Day will be held on Saturday, February 23 at Belltrees Cricket Grounds when the home team will take on old rivals - Rouchel - in a game of cricket followed by an auction including items such as a round of golf for four people at Ellerston, a joy flight in Pays War Plane and much more.

The main game will start at 12.30pm following a Twenty20 game that will start at 9.30am that morning.

There will be hospitality packages (sit down luncheon) in the EVENT

Storeroom’s pink room, where tables are able to be booked, kids’ novelties and plenty of entertainment into the evening.

A Facebook page has been set up and the organisers are asking any friends, family, colleagues, and team mates and loved ones to help them reach their fundraising goal for this year.

All proceeds raised on the day will be donated to the foundation, which places McGrath Breast Care nurses in communities across the country, as well as increasing breast awareness.

The concert will follow an exciting two-hour jazz workshop opportunity for local vocal students in the region.

Director of the UHCM, Adam Wills, said, “Janet has a rare an enviable reputation as a jazz vocalist and like Diana Krall she doubles on piano. We are really lucky to have her visit as part of our 2013 Visiting Artists Series”.

Based in Sydney, Janet Seidel has released 17 CDs in Australia as well as overseas. In the Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD 2006(UK) she is described as ‘Australia’s first lady of jazz singing’ and equally revered in the cabaret world. New York’s Cabaret Hotline stated, “I had heard so much about this delightful star from Australia, but I was still not prepared for this awesome performance. I have never been so thrilled by a performer since Barb Jungr – this lady is amazing – such pure clean vocals!”

Janet has been performing jazz oriented material since her high school and university days in the 1970s, has had the fortune of performing alongside Australia’s best jazz musicians, and has travelled the world wowing audiences throughout with her extraordinary talent. Now she brings her Trio (including David Seidel on double bass and Chuck Morgan on guitar) to the Upper Hunter for one performance only at Muswellbrook South PS Hall.

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the Janet Seidel Trio perform on Saturday 23 February at 7:30pm at Muswellbrook South PS Hall.

Tickets are on sale now. To book your seats, please call the UHCM on 6541 4888. (Adults $25 and concessions $15.)

The Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music is very pleased to announce Janet Seidel, hailed as Australia’s first lady of jazz singing, will soon visit the Upper Hunter for one concert only on Saturday 23 February.

Two Rivers Continues to ImpressBy Laura Sykes

Two Rivers winery at Denman has been a favourite attraction of the area since 1988. Locals and tourists alike enjoy the award-winning wines and stunning grounds of the estate, the love and pride of viticulturist Brett Keeping and his wife Linda. As well as the range of fresh, aromatic wines, Two Rivers offers the complete informative and relaxation package. Wine tasting and cheese and antipasto platters are available from the cellar door which also offers a panoramic view over the vineyard and river. For those looking for a longer stay, the guest cottage is also available, fully contained with four bedrooms and a slow combustion wood fire for extra warmth during cold winter nights.

The grounds also play host to a number of functions throughout the year, including the annual Rockin’ at the Rivers, a day of entertainment and family fun held each year in support of the local daycare. The beautiful grounds are also the perfect backdrop for weddings and other private occasions.

The Two Rivers Cellar Door is open 7 days from 11 am until 4 pm. 2 Yarrawa Road Denman NSW 2328. Phone: (02) 6547 2556

Thoroughbred Racing SnippetsBred to be very fast: Lot 111 at the Brisbane Yearling sale Sunday February 17 account Gainsborough Lodge. Like all the 52 from this top stud and the 24 in the catalogue from Thoroughbred International to be offered without reserve, the yearling is a brown filly by the Hennessy World Champion Sprinter HENNY HUGHES (USA), sire of 2012 Champion American 2YO filly Beholder and from I’M A DEVIL TO, winning half-sister by SEQUALO to the Australian sprint star and good sire FALVELON.

American Eclipse Awards Flavoured by HennessyAmerica’s historic Eclipse Awards, an annual measurement of racing excellence inaugurated in1971, for 2012 announced last week had a distinct flavour of Hennessy about them. Both Wise Dan, the 2012 Eclipse stand out Horse of the Year, and Beholder, the filly who waltzed away with the title of the best juvenile of her sex, are by sons of Hennessy, a Storm Cat sire who visited Coolmore in the Hunter Valley from America in four successive seasons.

In addition, Hennessy, himself one of the two highest ranked American juveniles of 1995, the only year he raced, is the paternal grandsire of Trinniberg, a 3-year-old colt who has been named best male sprinter of the year.

Conquerer of older performers in the $1.5million American Breeders’ Cup Sprint on November 3, Trinniberg is by Teuflesberg, a good class miler by Johannesburg, a Hennessy champion European 2-year-old who was sent to Australia five times by Coolmore, 2003-2007, for about 400 foals. He did not serve in 2007, being sent back home in September because of the equine influenza outbreak.

First Command Brings More Respect for Modest Import’s FamilyNearly forty years ago English bloodstock agent Richard Galpin (Newmarket Bloodstock) shipped a

small number of mares of modest credentials out to Australia and both he and some of the buyers were well rewarded when they were offered through an Inglis sale in Sydney. One Hunter Valley stud to reap benefit from the experiment was Gyarran, a well known breeding operation at Muswellbrook operated by Jack Sheppard and his son John. Regrettably both died in the bloom of life.

At the sale they acquired what was to become their most successful broodmare, Sheeaun, a winner of one minor race in England at nine furlongs by the provincial class sire Continuation.

Ancestress of two first class Danehill sprinting three-quarter brother grandsons in First Command (a Listed winner at Flemington on Saturday) and One World (a new sire last season at Larneuk stud, Euroa, Victoria), Sheeaun became the foundation of a strong Australian family for the Sheppards.

Scone Studmaster Well Rewarded for Doubling up Easy DateAdopting a pattern with his young sire Zizou, a leading Australian 2-year-old of 2006-07, of inbreeding to a plain looking mare of modest racing ability by the name of Easy Date who changed hands three times in less than four months in1984, has reaped a big reward for Hunter Valley breeder Stuart Ramsey. It came in the shape of a bay colt, Marseille Roulette, produced for Ramsey on his Turangga stud near Scone being successful at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday in the $250,000 Inglis 2YO Classic for their Sydney Classic Yearling sale graduates.

Experience. Sound advice. Positive outcomes. We think that just about covers it!

Coal Country Family FunBy Laura Sykes

Saturday 16 February will see Muswellbrook come alive for a day of family fun at the Coal Country Family Race Day.Hosted by Muswellbrook Race Club, the day is aimed at families with plenty of entertainment for the kids including a water slide, jumping castle and slip and slide. Also on show is a vintage car display and silks market, where spectators can purchase quality handmade products, as well as enjoying the racing itself. In its third year, the day always proves popular with spectators both young and old.

Major sponsors of the event are Mt Arthur Coal, Bengalla Mine, Subzero Group and Mangoola.

Helen Sinclair, general manager of the Muswellbrook Race Club says, “Country race clubs rarely operate on a weekend and this is our one Saturday for the year – a great opportunity for the community to come to the lovely shady grounds and enjoy bars, catering or picnic facilities.”

Entry is $12 for an adult, $6 concession or $22 for a family. Gates open at 11.30am. Those wishing to reserve a table for lunch are encouraged to contact the Silks Function Centre at [email protected] or on (02) 65411699.

Bugs and Plagues - Why Do We Live Longer Than Ever BeforeDr Norman Swan, ABC radio and television’s multi-award winning producer, broadcaster and entertaining speaker will be coming to Scone on Saturday, March 2 at the Scone Bowling Club from 7:00pm to 9:30pm as a guest speaker and panelist on a discussion panel moderated by local ABC Radio announcer, Mike Pritchard.Dr Swan has hosted the ABC television program, Quantum, been a guest reporter on Four Corners, produces the popular Health Report and Health Minutes and is known and respected internationally as a health reporter and researcher.

Dr Swan’s presentation will take us on a fascinating journey through history to answer the question why we live longer now than ever before and how that’s changing. Bernie Rischke, project officer for the Scone Neighourhood Centre said, “we’re very excited about bringing someone of Dr Swan’s reputation to Scone where people will have a chance to be entertained and informed with his sometimes quirky but always interesting wealth of knowledge about medical matters. His tour through history to answer why we live longer now than ever before will be compelling and instructive.”

Tickets are available from the Scone Neighbourhood and Aberdeen Neighbourhood Centres for $10 per person. Proceeds from the night will be used to support future Neighbourhood Centre projects.

The presentation and discussion will be followed by tea and coffee and a chance to meet up with the speakers.

For additional information please phone 6545 2562.

Tocal Waiting ListThere is a waiting list on all of Tocal’s courses for 2013. “The demand for Tocal courses this year has been extremely high,” Dr Cameron Archer, Principal said. “We look like having the highest number of students in residence for many years. The quality of applicants and interest and commitment to study in agriculture and horse husbandry is second-to-none. We are very pleased to have this level of interest and it augers well for the future.

“Staff have worked hard over the years in promoting courses but it is difficult to predict the demand for training, however, it is pleasing to see such strong interest. Certificate IV in Agriculture students will be commencing their studies on Monday, 4 February and Certificate III students will be commencing studies on Monday, 11 February.

“Students will be enrolling in Certificate III in Agriculture and Horse Husbandry and Certificate IV in Agriculture. A number of students continue on to undertake a Diploma in Agriculture with subsequent studies at degree level. We are finding students often leave school and like to gain the practical experience before embarking on university studies in agriculture,” Dr Archer said.

“The employment rate for past graduates remains strong and there are about three jobs available for each graduate we have produced in 2012. I see that continuing in 2013 because of the ongoing demand for skilled personnel to work in our agricultural industries,” Dr Archer said.

Tocal students undertake theoretical and practical studies throughout the year and also work on commercial farms. The Certificate III students have work experience of one week at a time at local farms; however, Certificate IV students undertake two four-week blocks of experience at farms across the country and in New Zealand. This gives them a great insight into the diversity and opportunities in agriculture,” Dr Archer said.
