To your call once more we rally,Alma Mater, hear our praise;Where the Wabash spreads its valley,Filled with joy our voices raise. From the skies in swelling echoesCome the cheers that tell the tale,Of your vict’ries and your heroes,Hail Purdue! We sing all hail!
ChorusHail, hail to old Purdue! All hail to our old gold and black!Hail, hail to old Purdue! Our friendship may she never lack,Ever grateful ever true,
Thus we raise our song anew,Of the days we’ve spent with you,All hail our own Purdue.
When in after years we’re turning,Alma Mater, back to you,May our hearts with love be yearning,For the scenes of old Purdue.Back among your pathways windingLet us seek what lies before,Fondest hopes and aims e’er finding,While we sing of days of yore.
Chorus

Dear FYSH Student,

FYSH (First Year Students at Hillel) is a program that aims tomake new students comfortable with college life. This is ourtenth year having a FYSH program at Purdue. We look forwardto your addition to the history of successful FYSH classes, manyof whom have gone on to leadership positions in Hillel, ICAP andother campus organizations.
Haley Vapnik (FYSH coordinator) has spent much of the summercreating this book and planning events for you. Throughout thisyear, there will be many activities designed to help you meetnew people, get involved with Hillel, and have some fun! Myselfand the Hillel Student Board will act as guides and mentors foryou this year. Feel free to ask questions, make suggestions, andspeak your mind; this program was designed for you to help you.
This book can serve as a guidebook to Purdue. Included arecalendars, information on the temple and synagogue, and otherthings that will make your first year as a boilermaker a success.
As president of Hillel Student Board (the group of studentsresponsible for much of what goes on at Hillel), I want to welcomeyou to Purdue and to Hillel. I hope this year proves to be excitingand memorable.

Hillel:Hillel is open from 9:00am to 6:00pm Monday through Thursday and 9:00am
until the last person leaves after Friday night services.Students are encouraged to spend their free time at Hillel. It is a great
place to study, take a nap, play pool, meet friends, or just take a break fromthe craziness we like to call school.
Religious Services:Friday Night Services begin at 7:00pm every Friday during the se-
mester followed by Shabbat dinner. Services are free, but dinner costs$4 or one can sign up for the entire semester for $48 (it’s like getting 2dinners for free).
Services for the High Holidays falling on weekdays are held at Hillel, when they fall on Saturday or Sunday students are always welcome atthe local synagogues. For Passover we hold Seders (whatever day theyfall) and offer a Kosher-for-Passover meal plan for the entire week.

We say Shabbat is the festive time at Hillel and Shabbat dinner is no exception.Although the experience is incalculable, the food, supplies & staff (time) costs money! With the generous sponsorship of people supportive of the Jewish campus communitywe are committed to keeping the costs to student at only $4 per meal per person. Inthe 15 -16 academic year Hillel will be serving 28 Shabbat dinners. At $4 each it is $112per person for a year of Shabbat dinners. Hillel is pleased to offer a DiSH ShabbatDinner discount of $90 for the year of Shabbat meals or $48 per semester. The discount, and paying in advance, will prevent a student from having to pay weekly.

Hello Boilermakers!! Welcome to Purdue. My name is Haley Vapnik andI am your FYSH chair at Purdue Hillel. I am a sophomore majoring in ChemicalEngineering. I’m from Tarzana, California, which is in the San FernandoValley region of Los Angeles.
When picking a college, I only looked at schools with top engineeringprograms but I wasn’t quite sure about Purdue. However, after coming fora visit, I knew Purdue was the right place for me. This first year for me atPurdue has definitely proved that I made the right decision and I couldn’t have imagined abetter first year in college. There is so much going on at Purdue, there is literally somethingfor everyone. Some activities I’ve been involved in, outside of Hillel, this year having beenplaying in the Purdue’s orchestra, becoming a brother of Phi Sigma Pi National HonorFraternity, and activities in the dorms.
I originally thought that Hillel was just going to become a place I occasionally go forShabbat dinners and for Holidays, but that quickly changed. I try to go to as many Hillelactivities as I possibly can and I try to stop even if it’s just to do homework. The people atHillel have become like a second family and I can’t imagine college without them.
I hope you can have an amazing experience at Purdue. I can’t wait to meet you all. Ifyou have any questions or need to talk, feel free to talk to me.
BOILER UP!!! – Haley

Before I came to Purdue, I knew I wanted to be involved with the HillelFoundation on campus. I attended the first Shabbat during BGR, and had anabsolute blast meeting a bunch of new, cool people that shared the sameJewish background as me. Throughout the entire year, I continued to meeteven more new, cool people. Going to a big school like Purdue, it’s reallyimportant to find groups of people that you can connect with to make thecampus not as overwhelming. For me, Hillel was one of those groups that Ican go to. Hillel gave me so many opportunities throughout the entire yearto be involved with the people around me which is a very important part of your collegecareer. Those first few weeks, while I was still learning and adjusting to everything that washappening at Purdue, I was able to depend on Hillel to always be there in case I neededadvice or any resource that a freshman could possibly need. As a Pre-Pharmacy major, anytime I wanted to get away from the books and all the chaos with exams, Hillel providedme with a place to go and people to talk to. I learned a ton of lessons throughout the yearbut one huge lesson I learned was to sign up for everything you could possibly be interestedin, try it out, and stick with it if you want to or drop it if you don’t want to. No matter howmany clubs you get involved with on campus, Hillel will ALWAYS be there for you!

Coming to Purdue, I didn’t really know what to expect. I live in the SiliconValley in California and I traveled across the US to Indiana to go to college. Icame to study animals and I ended up as a wildlife major with a minor in animalsciences. Since I was coming to Purdue from a different state and am not asan engineering major, I found Hillel and AEPi where I felt most comfortable.Coming to Shabbat dinners and for the holidays helped me feel like I was athome. (It was also nice to get a home cooked meal every once and a while, too.) I also got to see other people’s traditions and experience different cultures. Everyoneat Hillel was so welcoming and I immediately made friends. My Jewish identity felt strongerand I was proud to call myself Jewish.
