About the Calendar
Hindu Temple and Cultural Center is pleased to
release the 2018 calendar containing information needed for
the day to day usage by the devotees in the greater Seattle
Area.
Thithi: A month in the lunar calendar is the time the moon
takes for each revolution around the earth. The lunar month
is divided into two groups, called Pakshas, one when the
moon is waning (dark fortnight or Krishna Paksha) & when
the moon is waxing (bright fortnight or Shukla Paksha). Each
paksha is divided into 15 thithis. The first 14 thithis are
Sanskrit numberings from 1 to 14 (Prathama, Dwithiya etc).
The 15th thithi of Shukla Paksha is Purnima (full moon) &
the 15th of the Krishna Paksha is Amavasya (moon is not
visible as it is closes to the sun). So as lunar month consists
of 30 thithis & each thithi then corresponds to the time taken
by the moon to move 12 degrees, with respect to the sun.
Nakshatra: There are 27 Nakshatra (constellations) in the
Zodiac. A Nakshatra (shown in italics in calendar) is the
zodiac constellations in which the moon is found on the
particular day.
Timings listed in the calendar: The times listed after a
Thithi & Nakshatra are the times at which the Thithi or
Nakshatra ends. The panchanga uses the vedic definition of
day , i.e a day starts with sunrise and ends with subsequent
sunrise. Thus a thithi of 29:00 indicates that the thithi ends
before the subsequent sunrise. According to the Julian
(western) calendar, this means that thithi ends at 5:00 AM
(29:00 – 24:00) on the next day.
Festivals listed differently than in India: Hindu
festivals are generally based on the Tithi and/or Nakshatra as
per the lunar calendar (& some as per the solar calendar). For
example Rama Navami is Chaitra Shukla Navami
Madhyahna. Each thithi begins & ends at the same instant all
over the world. After correcting for the time zones , the tithi
will begin/end on different local times in different parts of
the world. Since India has little variation in terms of sunrise/
sunset, a panchanga computed for one area is generally
usable as-is throughout the country. This is not true when
festival is computed for different location on the earth say
Seattle.
