Some folks don't know the ditTerenco. "Mason. Ecker & Co." it reads now, Frank Ecker being the ••Co." Success to the new firm. Fourth of July comes on Monday this year. Patriotic sermons will be in order on Sunday the3d. W. J. Modlerand family have moved into the Royce House on Rridge Street and will take boarders. Miss Lillie McDonald and .Miss Ix'il- ward of Grand Rapids were in Lowell over Sunday. R. M. Rose of this place has returned to Ionia as keeper in the state house of correction. Elias Parker has been and is still mak- ing marked improvements on bis prem- ises on Hudson street. It isn't polite or gentlemanly to say 'how are ye?" to u lady unless you are acquainted with her. Ground was broken last week for the foundation of Peck and McDannell's new brick building on Rridge street. When a man is too free with his ad- vice the polite thing to do is to tell him not to rob himself. Why don't somebody convert the King & Amphlett block into a manufac- turing institution of some kind? If Mr. Pullen will put up a nice brick structure on his business corner he will have one of the boss places in town. Wheat has been advancing in price rapidly and our buyers yesterday com- menced paying if 1.08 to 1.10 per bushel. T. G. Stevenson of the Ionia Sentinel is in Colorado looking after his lambs of which he has 2,200, with a briliant pros- pect of many more, I le lost 700 sheep during the winter. The moon might have been badly eclipsed Saturday night: the clouds were too thick to |iermit Lowdl to •.ee it. At this writing, just before going to press, we hear of no steamboat sinking. The telegraph wires may be down, though. Uunther's mead and Clark's soda wat- er at J. (". West's, and five cents worth of it will make your palate laugh right out loud. (.'onkling and "me loo" (wich is Piatt) have learned by this time that the coun- try stands in front of them, not back of them. The Jaekson corset faetory furnishes employment to !Ui0 girls. Ah. bless those girls—how many waist places do they make glad! An icecream and strawberry festival will be given at the new M. H. Ghurch in Keene on Tuesday evening. Jttne21, All are invited. Catherine Hanna of Gaines, this coun- ty, wants a divorce from her John. He drinks, and thafs what's the matter with Hanna. The Lowell Nat ional Dank was one of the many banks that secured the con- tinuation of its five per cent, registered bonds at per rent interest. One of the model papers of Michigan is the Gratiotf'onnty Journal, which has just scored sweet sixteen. Robert Smith is a first-class journalist. The passenger and freight depots of the D. G. H. & M. Rw'y, Co., at Grand Rapids, were struck by lightning Sun- day night. Damage slight. Anna Peterson of Grand Rapids wants a divorce from her Peter, because he is a drunkard. She wants him to Peter out right avay gwick. The Grand Rapids board of fire and police commissioners have elected A Child for their Secretary. And a good selection they have made. too. There are certain evils and nuisances in town of which the JOURNAL prefers not to speak at present, but may feel compelled to soon if not attended to. Educated labor ought to be rewarded as well when done by women as when done by men. We are "woman's rights" enough to bet two dollars that that's so. Predicted that in less than a year our our village will look 100 per cent better than it looks now. And it looks 100 per cent better now than it did a year ago. The Kaptist Society will hold an ice Cream Social at the residence of Matthew Hunter. Wednesday evening next, June 23d. A cordial invitation is extended to all. It is too late now, but why didn't Hick's Lowell Rand go to Lmsing and bring home that first-class first prize?— The band will please consider itself kicked. ("has. Peats and Den Wood sheared 107 sheep in one day for I'at Curley of Rowne, and then quit work and of course waited patiently for the sun to go down. Whittlers of dry goods boxes will be pleased to learn that harvest hands are to receive good wages this season. They have better luck borrowing money when the laboring man gets good pay. The "revi; d" rather goes back on baptism by immersion. Instead of "out of" the "revised" makes them come from the water. "Everybody to his own notion," as the old saying says. The building on Rridge street, occtu pied by Frank Howard, has been raised, and new awnings have been put up in front of the two buildings east. We are pleased to note all such improvements. The M. E. Church was beautifully dec- orated last Sunday, and sixteen canary birds vied with each other in singing praises. It being "children's day" the services and appointments were very appropriate. Fitzgerald of the Ovid Union is writ- ing a venvinteresting and Instructive se- rial entitled "A post-oHice on Wheels or the U. S. Postal Service.' Mr. F. has Iwen there and knows whereof he writes. Extensive preparations for celebrating the. glorious Ith are being made in Grand Rapids. The executive commit tee have engaged Hick's Lowell Rand to do the music, thereby showing excellent judgment in their selection. Parties seeking a favorable location for manufacturing interests cannot do better than to come to Lowell. Here we have all the advantages necessary to the establishment and success of such enterprises. The Lowell fire Department will give a fourth-of-July ball at Train's Hall. Monday evening July -1. Music by Howe's full orchestra, assisted hy E. N. Decker, of loma, prompter. Rill *1.00. If the weather be favorable a large at- tendance may be expected. Friday morning the Grand Rapids Ag- ricultural Works were burned. The building contained plows, cultivators, and other farm implements, which were more oi less damaged. The pmperty was well insured and the fire is report- ed accidental. Mr James S. Fox. of Vergenncs, has goue to visit his early home in New York state, which he left 10 years ago and has never seen since. He will mark many changes an 1 lew famil- iar faces and places. The weather is good cnoiigh to take clear. It is delightfully delightful. Perhaps that comet won't switch us out of existence if we don't step on its tail. If the world comes to an end this year there will bo no steamboat disasters next year. We can always find something to be thankful for if we try. Did you ever stop to think that not a moment passes that does not find some- body in ibis world putting on a clean shirt? Oh. how varied is lire—yes. how varied dear is life. The Ladies' Waltz Club will give a so- cial party at Train's Hall, Kriday even- ing, Ibis week. Ralcom's orchestra will do the music and the membeisand their invited friends are requested to ^o early. Hon. N. A. Enrle of Grand Rapids, one of the most prominent members of the present state legislature, will to-day take unto himself a wife, her niaid> i name being Miss Hattie Olcott. It sel- dom happens in this country that a young lady marries an Earle. Probably our opinion of the revised testament has been asked over 100 times already. Probably we shall reserve our opinion until we find out just why a re- vision was necessary and whether the revisers knew better than the original writers what the latter wanted to say. and how to say it. \V. C. T. U. programme for Friday af- ternoon June !7th. Scriptural texts on subject of prayer—by each member.— Select Reading—Mrs. Mistier: Query box conducted by Mrs. Rurroughs: Paper— Mrs. C. R. Hine. Harry Ellis (formerly of Lowell.) Har- ry Stanton and E. P. Thayer of Grand Rapids started last week with their bi- cycles to join the University and De- troit clubs for a bicycling tour Cana- da. They will make the run without cow-catchers and may have trouble be- fore they get hack. The Grand Rapids races will come oil" next week, commencing Tuesday and closing Friday. The meeting promises to he a successful one: inany celebrated trotters having been entered. The man- agers are well pleased with the prospect and expect this to be the biggest and best ever held in the city. A Grand Rapids minister says "you bet" and "don't you forget il" in his ser- mons.—Detroit Ncwu. Entirely unnecessary. When a man bets he doesn't generally forget it—espe- cially If he wins. Perhaps the parson hears its? Reed City is trying hard to get the new asylum. And Grand Rapids wants it. And so does Monroe. And Lowell would take it and put it upon the pret- tiest elevation just east of the village that ever looked down upon a blessed and saintly people. Program of I.. L. C.. June 2llh IHS], Manner and Customs of the Kgyptians, Mrs. Knos: Language and Literature. Mrs. J. W. Hine; Recitation, Carrie Scott; Education in Egypt. Mrs. I. 10. Stiong: Humorous Readings. Mrs. M. M. Perry. COM. The pastor of the M. E. Church at Sar- anac, employed the New Revision in his pulpit Sunday last. Quite a number took their Ribles to church to compare them with the scripture lessons. Mr. Hell lectured in the evening on the "New Testament and its Revision" to a large audience, it being the second of a series on "The Rible." He next lectures on "The Manuscripts. E. W. Carrier, of the firm of Carrier & Robinson, had his pocket picked on the fair ground on Thursday. His loss was about $100 in cash and several notes and valuable papci-s.—Luiis Ukj Ih iinhli- run. The band was playing the other night and a cold-bloeded critic swung around his ear to listen and presently remarked "Well, I never could baritone likethat." it was too late to kill him that night and he left town on the early morning train. Thus does justice gel scoojied again. The Detroit Post and Tribune of the loth was a mammoth sheet of thirty-two pages with seven columns to the pagi— the largest paper ever issued in the West. It came out in a new form and new dress and from a new "Scott's Ro- tory Web Printing and Folding Machine.' the fastest, largest and best printing press ever put up in the Slate. The Post and Tribune has taken a big jump ahead and landed in the front rank of the very best papers in the coitniiy. We feel like getting out the band and giving it aliig shake-down benefit. Monday evening the second story plat- form at the rear of Mrs Spraguo's milli- nery shop broke down, precipitating in- to the river below—nearly twenty feet- Mrs. Heman Hogan and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hogan. The former fell head fore- most into the muck and was unable to extricate herself, but with the aid of Fred and others she was taken out unin- jured. Mrs. Fred Hogan received a slight cut over one eye and some bruises but was not seriously hurt. I 1 'red was only slightly injured. Hundreds of peo- ple were on the spot in a few moments after the crash was beatd and the ex- ; oitement was high until the parties were 1 safely out. The platform was a mere , skeleton frame work, hardly strong i enough to bold its own weight. It was 1 a very fortunate mishap for one so ex- tremely dangerous. If there are any more shaky rookeries in town—-and I here are—they should be looked after, either pulled down or made safe. The board of Supervisors of Kent county met in Grand Rapids on Monday. Supervisor E. R. Johnson of. Cascade elected chairman. Martin Doyle, Danii 1 A. Doyle and Michael Bowler of Grattau were each (ined small amounts in a Grand Rapids justice court Monday for assaulting Kmanual Nugent. The new iron span of the upper bridge is expected to arrive here Ibis week. Il will take about a week to pul it tip and then travel via. U. G. R. "Grattau Pioneers Welcome Their Friends." was the motto prepared by skillful hands and loving hearts, which took op a living reality through- i>ut the day. Messrs. Pom rand Cofliin- bury, of Grantl Rapids, likewise the Cannonsburg band gave ns good music in abundance, and the speakers were those who have long dwelt near or in our town. The sisters called out—Mrs. W. R. Davis, and Mrs. S. B. Kutz, pre- sented a "feast of reason and a flow of soul," equal to our eloquent brothers. Long may these happy gatherings con- tinue. Har ry Ellis (formerly of Lowell.) Har-ry Stanton and E. P . Thayer of Grand Rapids started last week with their bi-cycles to join the University and De-troit clubs for a bicycling tour Cana-da. They will make the run wi thout

cow-catchers and may have trouble be-fore they get hack.

The Grand Rapids races will come oil"

next week, commencing Tuesday and closing Friday. The meeting promises to he a successful one: inany celebrated trot ters having been entered. The man-

agers are well pleased with the prospect and expect this to be the biggest and best ever held in the city.

A Grand Rapids minister says "you bet" and "don' t you forget il" in his ser-mons.—Detroit Ncwu.

Entirely unnecessary. When a man

bets he doesn't generally forget it—espe-

cially If he wins. Perhaps the parson

hears its?

Reed City is t ry ing hard to get the new asylum. And Grand Rapids wants it. And so does Monroe. And Lowell

would take it and put it upon the pret-tiest elevation j u s t east of the village that ever looked down upon a blessed and saintly people.

The pastor of the M. E. Church a t Sar-

anac, employed the New Revision in his pulpit Sunday last. Quite a number took their Ribles to church to compare them with the scr ipture lessons. Mr.

Hell lectured in the evening on the "New Testament and its Revision" to a

large audience, it being the second of a series on "The Rible." He next lectures on "The Manuscripts.

E. W. Carrier, of the firm of Carrier & Robinson, had his pocket picked on the fair ground on Thursday. His loss was about $100 in cash and several notes and valuable papci-s.—LuiisUkj Ih iinhli-run.

and a cold-bloeded critic swung around his ear to listen and presently remarked

"Well , I never could baritone l i ke tha t . " i t was too late to kill him that night and he left town on the early morn ing

The Detroit Post and Tribune of the loth was a mammoth sheet of thir ty- two

pages wi th seven columns to the pagi— the largest paper ever issued in the

West. It came out in a new form and

new dress and f rom a new "Scott 's Ro-tory Web Pr in t ing and Folding Machine.' t he fastest, largest and best print ing

press ever put up in the Slate. The Post and Tribune has taken a big j u m p ahead and landed in the front rank of the very best papers in the coitniiy. We feel

like get t ing out the band and giving it a l i ig shake-down benefit.

Monday evening the second story plat-

form a t the rear of Mrs Spraguo's milli-nery shop broke down, precipitating in-to the river below—nearly twenty f e e t -

Mrs. Heman Hogan and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hogan. The former fell head fore-most into the muck and was unable to extr icate herself, but with the aid of

Fred and others she was taken out unin-jured. Mrs. Fred Hogan received a slight cut over one eye and some bruises

but was not seriously hur t . I1'red was

only slightly injured. Hundreds of peo-

ple were on the spot in a few moments a f t e r the crash was beatd and the ex-

; oitement was high until the parties were 1 safely out. The platform was a mere , skeleton f r a m e work, hardly strong i enough to bold its own weight. It was

1 a very fo r tuna te mishap for one so ex-

tremely dangerous. If there are any more shaky rookeries in town—-and I here a r e — t h e y should be looked a f t e r , either pulled down or made safe.
