Getting Ready for Fifth Grade at the Intermediate School:
As we enter the second half of the school year, the intermediate School staff will start welcoming and getting our fourth graders ready
for fifth grade at the Intermediate School.
Families are welcome to attend the Intermediate School’s Open House on April 29th. There will be a brief presentation for 4th grade
families and opportunities to walk around the school.
Families may also write placement requests to Mr. Bostwick, principal at the Intermediate School. These must be submitted by Friday,
April 4th. Please remember to not use a specific teacher’s name. The letter should include details of:
(1) how your child best learns
(2) the traits of a teacher that your child best
responds to.
Please do not hesitate to either call Center Street or the
Intermediate School if you have any questions.
Class Placements for the 2014-2015 School Year:
In the near future we will begin to look at classroom placements for the year 2014 – 2015. We use a team approach
for class placements and it is a long process. As you might imagine, we must take many things into consideration
when making placements. If you have any information/concerns about your child that we are unaware of, please
put it in writing and drop it off to the main office by Monday, April 21.
More 100 Days fun!
The CS Student Council is once again leading their global outreach to collect
pennies to prevent polio. We are committed to raising money each year until
we know that every child across our world will never battle with this disease
again! Join us by collecting your pennies and bring them in to school each
day. For every dollar we raise, the Horseheads Rotary Club will match it and
therefore doubling our outreach to help many more children.
EVERY PENNY COUNTS!
Common Core in Action - Writing
An essential area for all students to become proficient in is writing. Each month we will zoom in on one of the
three major text types (informational, narrative or opinion) and then the last month we will highlight the
supplemental standards for the writing process, using technology and engaging in research.
Standards for Writing Informational Texts
Kindergarten: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory
texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the
topic.
Grade One:
Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the
topic, and provide some sense of closure.
Grade Two:
Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions
to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
Grade Three: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information
clearly. a. Introduce a topic and group related information together; include illustrations when useful
to aiding comprehension. b. Develop the topic with facts, definitions, and details. c. Use linking words and phrases (e.g., also, another, and, more, but) to connect ideas within
categories of information. d. Provide a concluding statement or section.
Grade Four: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information
clearly. a. Introduce a topic clearly and group related information in paragraphs and sections; include
formatting (e.g., headings), illustrations, and multimedia when useful to aiding
comprehension. b. Develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information
and examples related to the topic. c. Link ideas within categories of information using words and phrases (e.g., another, for
example, also, because). d. Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic. e. Provide a concluding statement or section related to the information or explanation
presented.
YOUR RECYCLING WILL
HELP TO RAISE MONEY FOR
OUR STUDENTS AT CS!
That’s right - start saving your unused phone books,
catalogs, magazines, used office paper, and
newspapers. Bring them to our Carnival night on
Friday, March 28th. For every pound of paper, we
will receive 3 cents!!!
We believe in recycling and want to encourage our students to recycle
more at home. Now we can work together and help raise money for our
student programs. Start saving now! If you cannot make it to our
Carnival event, you will be able to drop your items off
throughout the school day too!
Thank you the CS Student Council
We want to thank all of you parents and staff who support PTO fund
raisers, clip box tops and soup labels, participate in our events and are
quick to send in items whenever we ask. With your help we can pay
for staff training and resources that school budgets cannot cover. We
can provide fun events for our students and assist in paying for field
trips and assemblies. We can purchase playground equipment, ice cream, books,
and school supplies. We can host the 4th grade picnic, staff appreciation events, a
visit from Santa Claus, school-wide fun nights among various other school events.
Volunteers work hard to make it all happen. Please consider giving some of
your time to help us accomplish all of our projects. Visit our web page
www.cspto.org to find our volunteer survey and let us know how you’d like to help.
The more we all work together, the more we can do for our
students, our staff, and our school.

The Good Apple Award is a tool to promote pride, self-esteem and positive character development. All faculty and
staff nominate students exhibiting good character. At the end of each month, the principal will announce the
recipients names, and will present the students with their award during their scheduled lunch time. A bulletin
board is in the Main Lobby to display each month’s recipients. The following students earned a good apple award
for showing exceptional character during this month.
The following students received Good Apple Award Certificates for February
Reading is important to learning, and it allows us to laugh, travel, and pass through different time
zones without even leaving our seats. Mrs. Sotero enjoys listening to the children read to her each
and every week whether it is a new book the students read or a story they wrote themselves.
