SUSTAINABILITY
HIP: Holistic Interprofessional Program2017-18 NC Albert Schweitzer Fellows
ECU School of Dental Medicine and Brody School of MedicineKiersten Bethea and Samantha Forlenza
An estimated 36,000 people considered low socioeconomic population including rural and migrant workers in and around Greenville, NC, with the majority currently lacking access to medical and dental services.
The Fellows Goals: • Improve individual and community health by
streamlining medical and dental collaborative care
• Establish a referral process among local shelter clinics to provide emergency dental care and medical evaluation
• Provide emergency dental care to relieve patients of acute pain
• Complete Hemoglobin A1c tests to assess for diabetes
• Provide nutrition counseling based off of A1c results
• Connect patients from local shelters to HIP and from HIP to James D. Bernstein Community Health Center using social work services
• Evaluate the program from volunteer surveys and personal experiences
• HIP will be sustained at the ECU School of Dental Medicine and Brody School of Medicine by two new Schweitzer Fellows: Jiwon Lim & Niki Winters
• HIP is now part of the 4th year dental student rotation through the emergency dental clinic
• HIP is available for medical students to volunteer at after completing their first semester
