From the days of colonial America to today, Bergen County, NJ , has played a pivotal role in local, state and American history. Original inhabitants were Native Americans of the Lenni Lenape tribe. Early settlements were made by the Dutch, with numerous examples of Dutch architecture remaining today throughout the county. Historic New Bridge Landing on the borders of Hackensack, River Edge, and New Milford has three such houses, most famous of which is the Steuben House..
