—EarlynamesfortheGreenportareawereWinterHarbor,StirlingandGreenHill. IthasalwaysbeenintheTownofSouthold.

1636-38 EarliestknownresidentofGreenportareawasCapt.MatthewSunderland.RecordsshowthatJamesFarrett,agentfortheEarlofStirling(aScot) collectedrentfromCapt.MatthewSunderlandforahouseonHashamamockPond,nearthewestborderofGreenport.1640 SettlersledbyRev.JohnYoungsarrivedfromNewHaven,CTandestablishedachurchwhoseboundsextendedfromPlumGuttoWadingRiver.1642 GreenportareawasofficiallypartoftheConnecticutColony.1664 AreabecamepartofNewYork.Late 1600s King’sHighway(Route25)wasestablished,openingalanefromthehighwaytoawharfonStirlingCreek.

Earlyindustriesinvolvedharvestingturpentine,makingwoodcasksandraisingcattle..1673 TheDutchtookNewYorkandSoutholdgaveallegiancetoConnecticut.WhentheEnglishretookNewYorkin1674,thecolonyreluctantly becameNewYorkersagain.1687 JohnYoungssold200acresonStirlingCreektoWilliamBooth.ThenknownasWinterHarbor,theareanowincludesalargeportionofGreenport.1755 BenjaminFranklinvisitedGreenportwhenhetraveledoverlandfromPhiladelphiatotakeaboattoNewLondonenroutetoBostontovisithismother.1755 WilliamBoothInn(alsoknownastheConstantBoothInn)wasbuiltatWinterHarbor.In1757,GeneralWashington(thenColonel)waitedat theInnforaboattotransporthimtoNewLondonwhiletravelingtoBoston.1776 Col.WilliamFloyd,aLongIslander,becameasigneroftheDeclarationofIndependence.1776 AftertheContinentalArmylosttheBattleofLongIslandinAugust,arearesidentswhohadrefusedtotakeanoathofallegiancetoGeorgeIII,left fromtheStirlingHarborwharfwithlivestockandfamilypossessionstotraveltoConnecticut.Theydidnotreturnuntilthewarended.1795 TheMinerva,withCaptainFowleratthehelm,wasthefirstwhalingshiptohomeportinGreenport.

1810 CodfishingandrelatedboatbuildingandchandlerybecameagrowingbusinessforthePeconicBayports.1820 Afterhisdeath,thesouthpartofCapt.DavidWebb’sfarmwasdividedintolotsandauctionedforabout$2,300.Greenportthusextendedits southboundaryfromWebbStreettothebay.1827 MainStreetwaslaidoutwithanewwharfatthefoot.

1800-1860 WhalingwasamajorindustryforGreenportandovertheperiod25 vesselsuseditashomeport...Shipbuilding andthemovementofgoods—producefromfarms,cottongoodsfromcitiesandslavesfromAfricaandSt.Thomas—createdabusyport.1831 ClarkHouseopenedonthepresentsiteofIrelandHouse.Over97yearsnumerousvisitorswerewelcomedincludingsuchnotablesasJohn QuincyAdams,AdmiralDeweyandGeneralWinfredScott.1831 Village’snamechangedtoGreenport.Villageincluded15homeswithothersinprogress,5stores,awarehouse,numerousmechanicshops,wharf and2ways,2whalingshipsandsmallerfishingvesselsandpackets.1834 ThefirstvesselbuiltinGreenportwasthesloopVan Buren,builtbyCalebHorton.ThefirstshipwastheJane Bishop,namedafterthedaughter ofthebuilder,HiramBishop.

1838 VillageofGreenportwasincorporated.

1844 TheLongIslandRailroadCompany,foundedin1834,completeditsmainlinetoGreenportprovidingafast(11-hour)NY-to-Bostonroute. Priortotherailroad,itwasa3-daytripbetweenNYandGreenportplusaLISoundcrossingandtrainorroadtripfromConnecticuttoMassachusetts.

1844 TheDamperEngineCompanywasGreenport’sfirstorganizedvolunteerfirefightingoutfit.1848 TheCaliforniaGoldRushcausedmanywhalingshipstobeconvertedtopassengertransportsforwould-beprospectors.1856-57 BetweenDecemberandFebruary,coldandsnowblizzardsisolatedthevillage.PeconicBaywasfrozenallwinter.1857 The Suffolk Weekly Times publisheditsfirstissue.Thefounderandeditorwas27-year-old,JohnJ.Riddell.Anannualsubscriptionwas$1.50.1859 Capt.JonathanPrestonreceivedastatechartertoferrybetweenGreenportandShelterIsland.

1858 Commercialscallopingbegan.

1860 Menhadenwasawell-establishedindustry...withalargefleetofboatsandfactoriesfortheextractionoffishoil.

1861 SuffolkCounty’sfirsttelegraphlinewasopenedwithwiresbetweenGreenportandEastHamptonbywayofSagHarbor,withundergroundcables toShelterIsland.1861 CivilWar.Theareawasstronglypro-Unionandadoptedresolutionsfavoringaconstitutionalamendmenttoendslaveryinthecountryforever.1864 GreenportreceivedtheFirstNationalBankcharteronLongIsland.1867 Greenportwasbecomingamodernvillage–populationexceeded2,000andtherewerestores,severalsaloons,tradesmenshops,finehotelsandabank.1870 ManuelClaudioopenedasaloonneartheMainStreetWharfandlatermovedtothepresentlocationandaddedtherestaurantandahotel.1878 StirlingHallopenedandwasavenueforGreenport’sentertainmentuntildestroyedbyfirein1899.

1879 Greenportgrammarschoolwaserected.1880 Greenport’spopulationwas2,370.1881 Atotalof5,350shipswereloggedintoGreenportharbor.Theareahad97fishfactoriesemploying2,805,286sailingvesselsand73fishingboats.1883 AnewcountycalledNassauwastobeformedbytakingtownsfromQueensandSuffolk.1883 AspecialLIRRtraintook500peopletothe“grandesteventofthe19thcentury,”theopeningoftheBrooklynBridge.

1884 Thearea’soysterindustrybegan...whenNYStatedeededthegroundsbeneathPeconicBaytotheSuffolkCountyOysterCommission. By1908,thirtycompanieswereoperating.Thelocalindustrypeakedinthe1930sandcontinuedintothe1960s.

1884 Ohio,amajorwarshipbuiltin1820,wasbroughttoGreenportbyCapt.Prestonforitsscrapironandcopper.Theemptyhullwasblownupand sunkoffConklin’sPoint.1887 GreenportLightandPowerCompanywasincorporated.TheVillagecontinuestoprovidetheseutilitiestoitsresidents.1888 Villageincluded300homes,20stores,7churches,6hotelsorinns,3shipyards,4wharves,1school,2banks,2newspapers,3firecompanies, severalfishfactories,lightandpowercompany,watercompany,policeandpostoffice.1888 Ablizzardwithrain,hail,snowandfiercewindscausedheavytreedamageandhardfrozensnowdrifts10to25feetdeepthatclosedtherailroad forfourdaysafterthestorm.1891 GreenportbreakwaterwasbuilttoprotectthedeepwaterharborofStirlingBasin.1894 GreenportAuditoriumbeganits44-yearhistoryastheVillage’scenterofculturalentertainment.1899 TheelegantGreenportOperaHousereplacedStirlingHallatthecornerofBayandMainStreets.Itsurviveduntil1956whenonlythefirststory wassavedfromdemolitionandusedforthepostofficeandalawyer’soffice.1900 Greenport’spopulationwas2,674;SoutholdTownwas8,989.1904 GreenportHighSchoolwasbuilt.1905 EasternLongIslandHospitalopenedandwastheonlyhospitaleastofMineola.1910 Greenport’spopulationreached3,098.1912 Eight-yearoldMarshallDrewofGreenportsurvivedthesinkingoftheTitanic.Hisfather,James,waslostatsea.1913 ParcelPostbeganoperationsatGreenportPostOfficeandfreemaildeliverywasinaugurated.1914 CrushedstonereplacedthedirtroadsofFrontandMainStreets.1915 AnewmovingpicturetheateropenedonFrontStreetwithseatingfor800.1917 FloydMemorialLibrarylocatedatthecornerofFirstandNorthStreetswasdedicated.Ittook13monthstobuildandcost$30,000.1917 MilitaryconscriptionbeganandmanyGreenportersservedinthewaroverseas.1918 Greenportvotedinfavorofgivingwomentherighttovote.1922 ANorthForkchapteroftheKuKluxKlanwasorganizedandmeetingswereheldinahouseonFirstStreet.

1923 GreenportbecameamajorcenterforbootleggingliquorduringProhibition.Unemploymentdroppedtonearzero.

1926 TheShelterIslandExpresstrainfromNewYorktoGreenportderailedinManorvilleandcrashedintoGolden’sPickleFactorykilling6people includingthetrain’sengineerandfireman,bothGreenportresidents.1928 TheArcadestoreopenedonFrontStreet.1930 TheentirecrewofthevictoriousEnterprise,Vanderbilt’sentryintotheAmerica’sCup,wasmusteredinGreenport.1933 Mitchell’sRestaurantopenedonthewaterfront.1938 ACategory3hurricanehitGreenport.Itspathcausedmajordamageand600deaths(noneinGreenport)onLongIslandandinNewEngland. HurricaneswerenotnameduntilWorldWarII.1941-45 MinesweeperswerebuiltandlaunchedfromGreenportBasinandConstructionCo.1942-43 ThePickettPatrolwasheadquarteredinGreenport.Withdonatedwoodensailboats,theU.S.NavypatrolledthecoastforGermansubmarines.1949 CornerstonelaidforGreenport’snewmodernEasternLongIslandHospital.1950 SkywayDrive-intheateropenedinGreenport.1956 Firstbankdrive-upinSuffolkCountyinstalledbyBankofNewYork.1958 MainStreetferrylandingabandonedwhennewferryslipswerecompletedatthefootofThirdStreet.

1960s Tourismgrewrapidly...assummervisitorscrowdedGreenport’sstreetsandshopsanditsmarinasfilledwithpleasureboats.

1961 Island’sEndGolfCourseopenedtothepublicontheformerPrincefamilyfarm.Theproshopisintheoldbarn.1963 LongBeachLighthouse(BugLight),builtin1870anddiscontinuedin1948,wasdestroyedbyarsonists.1967 Thefirst(andstillonly)trafficlightinthecommunitywasinstalledattheintersectionofFrontandThirdStreets.1978 Mitchell’sRestaurantBarandGrill,aGreenportwaterfrontlandmark,burnedtotheground.1979 StirlingHistoricalSocietyofGreenportopeneditsmuseum,IrelandHouse.(This is the starting location for the walking tour.)1990 BugLightwasreconstructedandrelighted.1998 AnadditiontotheFloydMemorialLibrarywascompleteddoublingthebuildingsize.2000 Greenport’spopulationwas2,050andtheTownofSoutholdwas20,600.2002 MitchellPark,thesiteoftheformerrestaurant,openedandquicklybecamethefavoredlocationforcommunityevents.

BeginthetouratIrelandHouseat319MainStreetonthenorthsideofthevillageparkinglotandnorthofthegazebo. IrelandHouseisthehomeoftheStirlingHistoricalSociety.Thehousewasbuiltintheearly1830sonthesouthsideofAdamsStreetabout100feetfromitspresentlocation.ThehousewashometonumerousGreenportworkingfamiliesmanyofwhomrentedfromthepropertyowners. ThehousestyleisGreenportVernacular,acommonhouseformbuiltfromthe1750s.Itisasimplesmall-scalehalfhousewithaplainfaçade,paintedclapboard,adoorwaywithsidelightandtransomand6/6panewindows.Itisahalfhousebecausewindowsareononesideofthefrontdoor. In1973,Mr.andMrs.FrederickPrestondonatedthehousetotheStirlingHistoricalSocietyandin1976,theSocietymovedittothepresentlocationat319MainStreet. TheSocietynamedthehouseafterMargaretE.Ireland,awellknowncivicworkerandanadmired,colorfulresidentofGreenport.ShewasanewspapercorrespondentfortheNYHeraldTribune,theNYJournalAmericanandlocalpapers;atirelessfundraiserforEasternLongIslandHospitalandBurtonPotterPostAmericanLegion,andmatronofGreenportPoliceDepartment.Ms.Ireland’sgrandparentslivedinthehouseinthelate1800sandraisedtheirfamilythere.LaterMs.Ireland’sparents,JamesandMargaretGrady,livedinthehouseandwhenMs.IrelandreturnedtoGreenportin1918,shealsotookupresidencywithherchildren.Shelivedinthehouseuntilherdeathin1962attheageofabout-83.BecauseMs.Irelandsaid,“ladiesnevertelltheirage,”thefamilycannotconfirmherdateofbirth.

Tour A#1 Bank of New York Building c.1864 238MainStreetBuiltbyCharlesLangtonCorwinfortheFirstNationalBankafterthebankreceivedthefirstnationalbankcharteronLongIslandinMarch1864.ThebankisoneofthelastoriginalbrickstructuresandtheonlyoriginalofitsperiodinthissectorofMainStreet.Thesecondstory,sideandrearsectionswereaddedbetween1897and1909.Thebracketsarecastiron;sillsandkeystonesaregranite.Thefirstdrive-uptellerwindowonEasternLongIslandwasaddedin1958.

#2 Reeve Building c.1873-90 210-212MainStreetThisisoneofthemostornamentalcommercialstructuresinthebusinessdistrict.IthasanarchedparapetwithwidebracketinganddentilworkalongthecornicewithwoodletteringthatspellsReeve’sBuilding.Notethescallopedshinglesandornatefalsefrontattheroofline.TheFreema-sonsmetonthesecondfloorforyearsbeforecompletingtheJohnstonMemorialMasonicTemplelocatedat430MainStreetin1901.

#3 Kramer Building c.1850’s 206-208MainStreetA fine Italianate brick store and keybuildingintheheartofthecommercialdistrict,thisisoneofthefewbuildingsofthistypeandvintagethatwerenotlosttofireor random replacement. The

firstofthreedruggiststooccupythebuildingwasG.H.Corwin.ArearadditionhousedthefirsttelephoneexchangeinGreenportin1906andinthe1920s,aspeakeasywassituatedonthesecond-floorrear.

#4 Whitney Hubbard Gallery c.1858-73 207-209MainStreetOvertheyearsandeventoday,thisbuildingwasmostoftenusedasastudioorartgallery.ItwasthegalleryoffamousAmericanImpression-istartistWhitneyHubbard(1875-1965)whoseworksareshownintheCorcoranGallery,BrooklynMuseum,ConnecticutAcademyofFineArts,theAtlantaMuseumandnumerousothers.Photographersrentedstudiospacefrom1897throughthe1920’s.FrankHartleyandHugoFreywereamongtheothernotabletenants.

#5 Claudio’s c.1838-58 111MainStreetManuelClaudioarrivedinGreenportaboardthePortuguesewhaler Nevein1854.Uponretirementin1870,heestablishedasaloononlowerMainStreet.HelateracquiredthepresentpropertyattheMainStreetWharfandopenedtherestaurantandahotel.Claudio’squicklybecameanintegralpartoftheGreenportharborscapeandhasbeenoperatedbytheClaudiofamilyeversince.Thebuilding,ontheNationalHistoricRegistersince1945,hasatwo-storyenclosedporchandpaneleddooren-trieswithspindledbrackets.InsideisanornatemirroredbarthatManuelsalvagedfromaNewYorkBoweryhotelandinstalledin1886.

#6 Preston’s c.1873-82 102MainStreetThissiteissymbolicofGreenport:Since1827whenMainStreetwaslaidoutwiththewharfatitsfoot,shipcaptainsmet,provisionedandtransportedpeopleandproductsfromthislocation.ThemainbuildingcomplexfacingMainStreetconsistsoftwojoinedstoresandaseparateshopthatwasformerlyacoalstoragebuilding.Thelatterwasmovedby

theNavyinWWIIandusedasamachineshopforboatrepairsandconstruction.

Overtheyears,Preston’shasservicedandprovisionedalargeassortmentof yachts, including those of theVanderbiltsandtheAstors.

#7 The Osprey Thebronzesculpture,MorningCall, ismorecloselyviewedfromthePrestonandClaudiodocksatthefootofMainStreet.The25-footpiecewassculptedbyRobertoJulioBessinfortheVillageofGreenportandinstalledJune2002onthedockoftheGreenportYacht&ShipbuildingCompany.Thepedestalisa20-footsteelbeamsalvagedfromTheWorldTradeCenter.

B Walk North on Main and turn right on East Front Street to Carpenter Street.

#8 Greenport Yacht & Shipbuilding c.1860 201CarpenterStreetTheconfigurationofthemarinerailwayinthisyachtyardhasremainedrelatively unchanged since its installation in the 1850s. Boats of up

to1000tonscanbehauledonit.Intheearly1900s,membersoftheNewYorkYachtClubhadtheirboatsoverhauledhereandAmericaCupcontendersrecruitedcrewfromtheyard.DuringWorldWarII,theyardemployed1200employeeswhoworkedontheconstructionofmine-sweepersandlandingcraft.

#9 Jail House c.1910 232CarpenterStreetThis was the village’s first official jail; its pre-decessorwasatoolshedbehindtheoldvillagehall.Thevillagelock-upwascalledTheGreenlightHotelbecausewhenoccupied,agreenlightinfrontwas turnedon.Located in thehistoriccommercialdistrict, the jail stands out because of the barredwindowandall-brickexterior.The jailhas threecellswithpressedtinwalls.Itisnolongerusedinitsofficialcapacity.

#10 151 Bay Avenue c.1837/1897Thislocationisanimportantintroductiontotheresidentialneighbor-hoodthatbordersthevillage’scommercialcenter.ThehouseoriginallyonthesitewasmovedandonlytherearkitchenwingwaskeptwhenthemainQueenAnnehousewasbuiltpriorto1897.JohnG.Champlin,groceranddrygoods,wasanearlyownerofthe21/2-storyhouse.Thereisawrap-aroundporchand5-windowbayonthefirststorywithtowerabove.Double-bracketedcornicesarefeaturedthroughout.

#11 168 Bay Avenue c.1859/1863OneofseverallargeBayAvenuehomesbuiltbytherisingmerchantclassofGreenport.Italianatestylewithdoublebracketedcorniceabovetwoopenfrontporcheswithtaperedsquarecolumns.Porchcolumnshavebeveledcornersthatcreateillusionofarches;thesingleporchrailhasdecorativebracketingalongthebottom.Easternfrontdoorisflankedbysidelightswithetchedfloralpattern.

#12 Kendrick House c.1810 152BayAvenueD.Kendrick,ashipcarpenter,wastheoriginalownerofthehousethatistheoldestonthistour.ThissmallGreekRevivalgemisoneofthefew11/2-storyhousesona2-storyblock.

#13 Lyons House c.1873-90 141BayAvenueThehousewasoriginallyownedbytheLyons,aprominentfamilyin19thcenturyGreenportthatincludedalawyeranddepartmentstoreowner.Thebuildingisa2-storyItalianatewithflatroof,doublebracketedcorniceandornatewidow’swalkwitharchedwindowson4sides.Theporcheshavegingerbreadrailings,decorativebracketsandsquarecolumns.

#14 122 Bay Avenue c.1858-73Oneofthemoreoriginalhousesontheblock.Thefrontdoorislocateddirectly below a center gable andhas a gabledpedimentwith squarecolumns.Long2/2windowsflankthefrontdoorandareinthegableabove thedoor. Thehousehas irregularbracketingand3/3eyebrowwindowsonthefront2ndstory.

B Before heading one block north (left) to Central Avenue (Tuthill Street prior to 1897), take a moment to admire the bay view from the public dock at the end of Bay Avenue.

#15. 123 Central Avenue c.1838-58OneofthemajorhousesonthestreetandoriginallypartoftheTuthillestate.Remodeled in the mid-1890s. This is aflat-roofed21/2-storyhousewithafrontporchthatwrapstotheeastside.Theporchhassquarecolumnbases,pairedbrackets,decorativefinialsandspindlebalustrade.ThefrontdoorisGreekRevival.Thefirstfloorwindowsfrontingtheporchare9/9floor-to-ceiling#16. 145 Central Avenue c.1838-58Oneof the fewexamples inGreenportofa11/2-storyhalf-house thatdevelopedintoafullhouse.Thefirstportionwasbuiltbetween1838and1858;thewesthalfwasaddedbetween1858and1873whentheA.Waynesfamilywereresidents.

#17. 163 Central Avenue c.1875ThehousebelongedtoGeorgeWebb,ashippainteranddealerinpaintsandoils.Itisa21/2-storybuildingwitha11/2-storyeasternwing.Aone-storyporchwithturnedcolumnsonpedestalsextendsacrossthefrontageofbothwings.ThisisanexcellentexampleofItalianatearchitecturethatretainsmanynotablefeaturesofthestyle.Ithasexcellentbracketingandanarticulatedentablatureoverthemaindoorwayandsidelights.

#18. 320 Carpenter Street c.1815OnthesoutheastcornerofCentralandCarpenterisasmallerscaled,1-story3-bayedhousebuiltinFederalstylenearthebeginningofthe1800s.ThisisoneofGreenport’searliestsurvivingresidences.Pilastersandadecorativepedimentwithdentiledcornicesflankthecenteredfrontentry. Thehousehas threesmalleyebrowwindowsof12paneseachlocatedundertheeaves.

#19. 510 Carpenter Street c.1840sTheoriginal2-storyhouse,builtinthe1840s,issmallandnarrowandcanbeseenattherearoftheproperty.Itwasmovedtogivefrontageroomtothenewcross-gabledhousebuiltin1873.ThehousesaregoodexamplesofthesimpleVictorianvernacularforworkingclassfamiliesofthetime.

#21. 608 Carpenter Street c.Late1800sSittingclosetothestreet,thisisoneofseveraloriginalsaltboxhomesonCarpenterStreet.Thesesmalloldhousesaresitedclosetothestreetondeepnarrowlots.Theycomplimentandaddtothediversityofarchitec-turalstylesonthestreet.

#23. Walter Havens Cottage c.Early1800s 425MainStreetIn1864-65,thiswasacountrystoreownedbyWalterHavens.ItisafineexampleofaCapeCodhalf-house.ThedoorwayisGreekRevivalwithslenderroundpilasters.Theeight-paneleddoorhasbentwoodsidelightswithamatchingtransomabove.

The Times Building c.1909 429MainStreetThenameappearsonthebuildingfrontageabovetheIonicreliefcol-umnsthatseparatethemulti-paneddisplaywindow.ThiswasthefirstpermanentofficeofTheSuffolkTimes,aweeklynewspaperpublishedinGreenport from1857until1989. Theweeklycontinues todocu-mentGreenportandLong Island’sEastEnd from itspresentoffice inMattituck.

#25. Phillips House c.1830;rebuilt1860 433MainStreetNamedafterS.W.Phillips,presidentofthePeoples National Bank in the late 1880’s,thehouseisoneofthemostdecorativebuild-ings in this sector. It has a scalloped slateroof, massive decorative woodwork, heavilybracketed mansard roof, and a carriagewaythroughsouthwing.Anotablefeatureisthepairofwhitecastironlionsstraddlingthefrontsteps.#26. Timson Hotel c.1830 437-455MainStreetThe31/2-storynorthsectionwastheoriginalconstructionwiththe2-storysouthwingaddedafter1890.ThehotelwaslocatedatanimportantjunctureofMainandCentralAvenue.WhenthewharfatthefootofCentralAvenuewascompletedin 1838, the hotel was in anexcellent location to receive

guestsfromtheboatsthatdockedatthewharf.ItwasalsotwoblocksfromStirlingHall(locatedatthesoutheastcornerofMainandBay)thatprovidedentertainmenttoguestsandGreenportersuntilitburnedin1899.

#27.Greenport Auditorium c.1894 434MainStreet TheAuditoriumisalarge,handsomeandimpressiveQueenAnnestructurebuiltthroughthe“pluckandpublicspirit”ofMissSaraAdamsto“upliftthemoraltoneofthecommunity.”ThearchitectwasGeorgeH.FlackandthebuilderwasCharlesCorwin.Until1938,theAuditoriumwasthecenterforculturalentertainmentthatincludedseriousdrama,vaudevilleandbandmusic.Despiteitscurrentuseasafurniturestore,theownershavepreservedtheinterior– itsdressingroomsinthebasementbelowstage,thecurvedbalconywithornatemetalgrillworkandthestageareinexcellentcondition.

#28. H. E. Wells House c.1873 455MainStreetThislargeQueenAnnehousewasbuiltinfrontofahousebuiltintheearly19thcentury.Thestreetfrontageshowstwobaywindowsandheavypaneleddoorswithcasthardware.Thefaçadehasscallopedshingles,largeclapboardsandasunburstdesignatthepeakoftheroof.Mr.Wells,theoriginalowner,discoveredthebunkerprocessofextractingfishoil.

#29. 500 Main Street c.1858Thehousemarksaborderbetween thecommercialdevelopmentsonlowerMainStreetnearthewharfsandtheresidencesbuiltprimarilyformerchants tothenorth.Built inGreekRevival style,adistinguishingfeatureofthepropertyisthetwo-storyporchthatwasaddedbetween1890and1897.Theporchhasfour8-sidedcolumnstoppedbydoublebracketsand4/4porchwindowsthatextendtotheporchfloor.

#30. Captain Wells House c.1864/70 530MainStreetItalianate villa of grandproportionsbuilt forCaptainWellsattheheightofthewhalingindustry.Thehousehastwin-archedwindowsonallsidesofthetowerandelegantarchesonfrontporch.Afterlosinghiswhalingfortune,CaptainWellshadhisship,theSwallow,enlargedandwenttoAfricatoobtainslaves.Hecollectedthehu-mancargoandstartedhomewardbutwasneverheardofagain.Thecrew,however,arrivedsafely,soldtheslavesandtheship.

#31. Captain Case House c.1850/70 527MainStreetEbenezerW.Caselivedherethroughtheaboveperiod.The21/2-storyhousewithmansardroof,embellishedin1870,isvintageVictorian.ItisbracketedFrenchSecondEmpirestylewithsidebaywindow,jigsawporchdetail,dentilsunderwindowcapsandadoublefrontdoor.

#32. Grosvenor C. Adams House c.1870 630MainStreetMr.AdamswasthepresidentoftheFirstNationalBankfrom1864when

thebankwaschartereduntilhisdeathin1883.ThehouseisQueenAnnestylewithinvertedtruncatedshinglesongablepediments.Bracketedcor-nice,doublefrontdoorwithroundhead;2-storysouthbaywithpaneleddado.Notableentablaturesonrearporchdoorandwindows.

#33. Conklin House c.1820 636MainStreetThisGreekRevivalhousewasbuiltfortheConklinsbyOrinWigginsandisoneoftheolderstructuresinthisareaofMainStreet.Itisa11/2-storycottagewithahand-constructedwindowanddoorcornices.Muchoftheoriginaldetailisintact.

#34. Civil War Monument 1883 BroadandMainStreets“ThecommunityisindebtedtotheenergeticworkoftheladiesoftheSoldiersAidSociety”fortheSoldiersMonumentandwereassistedbycomradesof theEdwardHunttingPost IIG.A.R. Beginningwith aFourthofJulybenefitdinner,theladiesoftheSoldiersAidSocietyraisedthefunds($1,000)forthemonument.TheQuincygranitemonumentisatributetothedeathof29Greenporters.ItwasinstalledinNovember1883anddedicatedonDecorationDay1884.

In early years, the convergence of Main, Broad and Stirling Streets was called Steamboat Corner and led to the docks in Stirling Harbor. People gathered here to watch the boats in the harbor and share tales of sea adventures. c

#35. 162 Stirling Street c.1883Thisprominentwaterfrontsitewasthe locationoftheT.HempsteadpotterypriortotheconstructionofthehousebyMr.Beck,presidentofN.Y.C.FireInsuranceCo.Thehouse,setonspaciousgrounds,hasseveraluniquefeaturessomeofwhichwereaddedin1908:Palladianstylewindowinthefrontgable;woodfanlightcarvingingabletip;scal-lopedshingleswithfinial-likeornaments;doublefrontdoorswithlargebeveledglasswindowsandaturret.

#36 Townsend Manor Inn (a) 714MainStreet 1835Oneof threebuildings comprising the innproperty.Thehighly visiblehouse,residenceofwhalingCaptainGeorgeCoggswell,hasatwo-storiedcolumnedfaçadewithdominantexteriormoldings.ThepropertybacksontoStirlingCreektherebyprovidingboatdockage.CaptainCoggswellmovedtoCaliforniain1849thoughWidowCoggswellwasinresidencein1858.

(b) 726MainStreetc.pre1858Architecturally,theGingerbreadHouserepresentsahighlyindividualistichandlingofItalianelementsbyanunknownarchitect.Itselaboratecor-

nicehaslargeandsmallfleur-de-lismotifs.Thefrontdoortransomandsidelightshaveveryrare,original, staineddarkredandbluewindowswithcutout,stenciltypedesigns.In1858,thehousewastheresidenceofG.Cripps.

#37. Memorial Park MainandFirstStreetsThesmalltriangularparkislocatedwhereFirstandMainStreetsconverge.TheparkhasthreemonumentsdedicatedtothememoryofGreenport-erswhoservedintheU.S.militaryinWorldWarI,WorldWarIIortheVietnamConflict.

#38. 633 First Street c.1870Thehouseispartiallyhiddenbya10-footevergreenfence.Itwasthe1873residenceofG.H.Cleaves,adruggistwhoworkedforG.H.Corwin.Itisalargetwo-storyItalianatewithflatroof.Theexteriorandinteriorarerichinlate19thCenturydetail.Exteriorhaspaneled fasciaboardwithdouble solidribbonbrackets.Asideporchwasaddedin1897andextendedpriorto1909.

#39 602 First Street c.1850ThisfineexampleofItalianatestylewasbuiltin1850.Thesecond-storyarchedwindowcarryupwardtheeffectachievedbythearchedfrontdoorwithitsetchedrubyglasssidelights.Bracketsandallexteriorwoodworkarewellproportionedandexecuted.Notethefinelydetailedhalfoctagonalbaywindowonthesouthelevation.Between1897and1909,thecupolawasremovedandtheroofchangedfromslatetoshingle.

Oneof the fewbrickbuildingsinthevillage,thisresidenceisanexcellentexampleofFederalstylewithelegantGreekRevivalelements.Thecolumnedporticodoor-waysareoutlinedbynarrowsidelightsandtransomanddentilsundertheeaves.Notethebalanceachievedbythematchingentriesfacingthetwocornerstreets.

#41. Floyd Memorial Library 1917 110NorthStreetThefunds($30,000)toconstructthelibraryweredonatedbyMissGraceFloydinmemoryofherfather,DavidGelstonFloyd,awhaler,bankerandgrandsonofGeneralWilliamFloydsigneroftheDeclarationofIn-dependence.ThelibrarywasdesignedtoresembletheFloydhomestead,Brecknock Hall on SoundAvenue, and the stonescame from the estate’squarry.D.StanleyCor-wincompletedthecon-structionin13months.In1998,the3-storywestwingmorethandoubledthesizeofthelibrary.

#42. 529 First Street c.1874AninscriptiononthebasementwalldatesthehouseJune1874fortheownersnamedHubbard. Anextremelyfinebuildingset fartherbackfromFirstStreetlikeitsneighborsat519and525.Ithasadistinctive

MansardstylewithItalianatedetailsthatincludefinebracketing,windowcapsoversecond-storydormersandscrollworkundereaves.

#43. Andrew Wiggins House c.1858 519FirstStreet Thishouse,aconglomerationofItalianateandMansardstyles,containssomeof thefinest exterior trimand features found in the area. TheexceptionalworkmanshipisbyAndrewWiggins,carpenter,whobuiltthehouseforhisownfamily.Elaboratebracketing,dentilwork,archedwindowcapsandpanelingarevisibleonthefrontofthehouse.Looktowardthebackoftheleftsideofthehousetoseeacontinuationofthebeautifulwoodworkonthesideporch.

#44. Whitney Hubbard House c.1858/73 511FirstStreetLateGreekRevivaldoorwaywithinterestingturnedtrimondoorpilaster.Notedentilsunderroofeavesanddoorcap,anddoublearched windows in gable.Whitney Hub-bard, notable Long Island Impressionistpainter,inheritedthehousefromhisfather,Elijah,aconfectioner.Thefamilyretainedownershipfrom1880to1965.Whitney’sstudiowasonMainStreet.

Ackley House c.1845 509FirstStreetAckleyHouseisoneoftwobrickresidences(theotheris#40)inGreen-port.ItsstyleisFederalwhiletheentrydoor trim and sidelights are GreekRevival.Notetheeleganceachievedbytherowofwindowsonthesecondstoryand the attractive dentils at rooflineand around doorportico. Therehasbeen very little change in the exteriorandinterior.
