Melrose AbbeyThe abbey is beautiful in every season the lovelypink sandstone gives it a very special quality. It has beenpictured on Christmas cards, all covered in snow, butI particularly love the spring, when the flowers comeup along the north wall.

In centuries past the abbey offered a warm welcome totravellers heading north or south. The same is true today

with English holidaymakers paying a visit after they crossinto Scotland and Scots dropping by as they go theother way.

Once a lawless place, the Borders is now a destinationin its own right. Frank and his colleagues greet manywalkers who are starting, or completing, the 62.5 miletrek along St Cuthberts Way which links the abbey toanother great religious centre at Lindisfarne.

Bothwell CastleAs a boy in the 1950s Chris and his mates used to cyclefrom their home six miles away to clamber round thecastle dreaming of being medieval soldiers. He neverimagined hed end up running the place and welcominga whole new generations of young visitors.

I love talking to people about the castle and its great tosee their expressions as they find out about its past. A lot

of the time they are unaware of how important it was inthe Braveheart era, the Wars of Independence, when itwas taken twice by Longshanks Edward I of England.

So much happened here, the castle was battered, besieged and captured many times. The armies have allgone now but the castle is still standing. And today its ahaven of peace and tranquility.

Stirling CastleThe castle can be seen for miles around that was thepoint to impress friends and send a shiver of fearthrough enemies. But after years of working within itswalls, steeped in its history, Gillian sees it as much morethan a fortress.

This was a place where kings, queens, courtiers, servantsand soldiers spent their lives it was a place of joys and

    sorrows of every kind.

And whats great is that nowadays its a place which isenjoyed by hundreds of thousands of visitors who flockhere every year from all round the world.

St Andrews Cathedraland CastleYoungsters love to explore the cathedral and nearbycastle theres lots to discover. They can peer down thedeep wells, or climb the 33m St Rules Tower. The fabulousviews of the town and the sea are a great reward.

According to Bradley there is plenty to inspire visitorsof every age, whether its the ruins themselves or the

exhibits in the cathedral museum. Among these arefinely carved early medieval Christian crosses and itsgreatest treasure, the St Andrews Sarcophagus, amasterpiece of Pictish art which is alive with carvingsof people and fabulous beasts.

Straight away children are overawed by the scale of thecathedral. Its then they start to realise how skilful ourancestors were creating somewhere so vast, spiritualand impressive with just the simplest of tools.

Stanley MillsHistory should grab the imagination and thats whatStanley Mills does. Its one of our most recent attractions, but people have really taken it to their hearts. Kaye saysthats partly because theres so much to do, with lots ofinteractive exhibits which are enjoyed by children andadults alike. At the same time it tells one of the great, and often neglected, stories of Scottish history.

It shows how men and women were drafted in fromthe countryside to operate the great machines whichtransformed a rural economy into an industrialpowerhouse.

Its amazing, when the sun sparkles on the Tay this is themost peaceful place on Earth. But 200 years ago the noisemust have been deafening, as great water wheels drovethe most advanced machines of the Industrial Revolution.

Arnol BlackhouseScotlands history isnt just about its past but its future.Todays visitors think of the blackhouse as the originaleco-home, making use of local resources and recyclingeverything possible.

The blackhouse was the ultimate green home. The stonefor the walls came straight from the ground, the roofthatch was straw left over after the harvest and all the

heating and cooking was fuelled from one small fire inthe middle of the room.

The peat for the fires was all dug locally and the rooftimbers are of wood that was washed up on the shore. You look up in the roof and theres whale bone and allsorts up there. People now look at blackhouses as settingan example which we can all learn from.
