    PRINTED FOR THE SOCIETY

    1955

  • Made and Printed in Great Britain by C. Tinling & Co., Ltd., Liverpool, London, and Prescot.

  • EDITORIAL NOTE

Papers published in the TRANSACTIONS usually have been read previously to the Society, but the Council is always ready to consider for publication papers sent to the Honorary Editor by members or non-members who have worked on some aspect of the history of Lancashire or Cheshire. This volume is most exceptional in that it contains no less than five such papers. Mr. Gaythorpe of Barrow-in-Furness has spent a long lifetime struggling to solve the problem of Jeremiah Horrocks's date of birth and parentage, and the Council has gladly published his competent and scholarly summary of the problem and the evidence. Mr. Fussell of Suffolk, Mr. Taylor of University College, London, and Associate-Professor McCready of McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, all offered their papers to the Society because they considered the TRANS- ACTIONS the most suitable vehicle for their publication. Mr. Greville of Devon kindly accepted the Council's invitation to compile a list of Cheshire railways to follow the list of Lancashire railways which we published last year.

The Society acknowledges with thanks a grant of £25 made by the Council for British Archaeology towards the cost of printing Professor I. A. Richmond's "Excavations on the Site of the Roman Fort at Lancaster, 1950" in Volume CV. The Society also wishes to thank Mr. S. A. Harris, Mr. W. F. Irvine, Professor S. Potter and Mr. R. Richards for contributions towards the cost of publishing this present volume.

    J. J. BAGLEY, 20 August 1955. Honorary Editor.

    The University, Liverpool.

The Council wishes it to be known that authors alone are responsible for the opinions and statements in then" several com- munications.

Contributors to these TRANSACTIONS are advised to communicate with the Honorary Editor from whom suggestions on the preparation of manuscripts are available on request. Members who wish to read papers should communicate with the Honorary Secretary.
