Seven Michigan students received special honors at this year’s competition. “The History Day theme for 2017—Taking a Stand in History—allowed our students to create some very innovative and impassioned entries,” said Amy Bradfield, State Coordinator for Michigan History Day® (National History Day in Michigan). “We are proud of each and every student who participated in the 2017 History Day program.” Michigan students competing in the National History Day competition represented several cities, including Ada, Bay City, Berkley, Beverly Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Cassopolis, Fraser, Grand Rapids, Holland, Houghton, Kalamazoo, Kentwood, Lake Linden, Owosso, Redford, Richland, Sault Ste. Marie, South Haven, St. Joseph, Traverse City, Troy, Village of Clarkston, Whitehall and Ypsilanti. MICHIGAN STUDENTS HONORED AT 2017 NATIONAL HISTORY DAY

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—Michigan students were

among the thousands of participants from across the United

States and several territories competing in the 2017 National

History Day contest, which took place June 11-15, 2017, in

College Park, Md. Seven Michigan students received

special honors at this year’s competition.

“The History Day theme for 2017—Taking a Stand

in History—allowed our students to create some very

innovative and impassioned entries,” said Amy Bradfield,

State Coordinator for Michigan History Day® (National

History Day in Michigan). “We are proud of each and every student who participated in the 2017 History

Day program.”

Michigan students competing in the National History

Day competition represented several cities, including Ada,

Bay City, Berkley, Beverly Hills, Bloomfield Hills,

Cassopolis, Fraser, Grand Rapids, Holland, Houghton,

Kalamazoo, Kentwood, Lake Linden, Owosso, Redford,

Richland, Sault Ste. Marie, South Haven, St. Joseph,

Traverse City, Troy, Village of Clarkston, Whitehall and

Ypsilanti.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Sarah Kenkel, Vikram Lakshmanan, Megan Sun,

Samhita Surapaneni and Makena Torrey from

Bloomfield Hills High School in Bloomfield Hills were selected to represent Michigan at the

Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History with their exhibit, “Dr. Seuss: A Man With a

Plan.” The students were sponsored by coach Erin Cervi.

Sarah Gundry, Christine Huynh and Josephine Koch of Northern Hills Middle School in

Grand Rapids, sponsors Mary McMahon and Beth McMahon, placed seventh in the nation for Junior

Division Group Performance with their entry, “Vida Goldstein: The Woman Whose Words Shaped the

Women's Suffrage Movement in Australia.” They also received the Junior Division Outstanding State

Entry Award, designating them as best-in-state.

Samantha Conkling and Maya Gates of Eastern

Middle School in Ada, sponsor James Cross, placed

ninth in the nation for Junior Division Group Website

with their entry, “Bravery

Against Slavery: The Stono

Rebellion's Fight For

Freedom.”

Lizzie Mathias of

Lisa Mathias Homeschool in

Ada, sponsor Lisa Mathias,

received the Senior Division Outstanding State Entry Award,

designating her as best-in-state, for her Individual Documentary entry,

“The Personal Is Political:

Alison Bechdel's Feminist

and LGBT Activism.”

Tiffanie Cross of Whitehall High School in

Whitehall, sponsor Jan Klco, received the Senior

Division U.S. Constitution Award with her Individual

Performance entry, “Pardon Who? Ford’s Stance on

Healing the Nation.” The award is sponsored by the

National Archives and Records Administration. It is

awarded to an outstanding entry that used the records of

the federal government to either illuminate the creation

and ratification of the U.S. Constitution or focus on Constitutional issues throughout American history.

Michigan History Day® is an educational program of the Historical Society of Michigan,

(hsmichigan.org) the state’s oldest cultural organization. Major sponsors of Michigan History Day are

Meijer and Amway. Michigan History Day is an affiliate of National History Day, which was established
