Kunín Chateau is among the most precious baroque chateaux in Moravia. A renaissance fortress, rebuilt into a baroque chateau of the Harrach family according to the project of J.L. Hildebrandt, was originally in its location. It reached its greatest heyday at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries during the reign of the countess Marie Walburg Harrach, who built there one of the most modern educational institutes in Central Europe at that time. Its best-known student was the “Father of the Nation“ and great Czech historian František Palacký.
At present the chateau has gone through extensive reconstruction, which restored interiors to their original appearance. During the very interesting sightseeing tour the visitor will marvel at the substantial change of the chateau from ruins into this baroque jewel. The chateau and its park are also the scene of various cultural events associated with the building history.

The town of Hradec nad Moravicí is the entrance gate to the picturesque valley of the Moravice Ri-ver, and its landmark is the complex of the White and Red Chateaux along with the adjacent large park. The older building, the so-called White Chateu, is situated in the location of a Slavic hillfort from the 8th century, where the princely castle of the Premyslid dynasty was built in the 11th - 13th centuries. At the end of the 16th century it was rebuilt into a renaissance chateau with a decora-tive garden. It got its present empire style shape after the fire in 1796, when it was reconstructed according to the design of Jan Mihatch. Other, especially interior adaptations in romance style were made in 1845 - 1859 and after the year 1861. From 1874 to 1891 other buildings, such as the White Tower, a fortification wall with a terrace and the so-called Red Chateau, inspired by unalte-red castles of Medieval Germany, were built according to the design of A. Langer and F. Händel. At present they serve as a hotel and renowned restaurant. The chateau park is completed with a land-scaped park with an area of approximately 63 hectares, founded in 1796.
A permanent exhibition on the history of the chateau and the gallery that displays jewels of the original chateau picture-gallery. Guests such as L. van Beethoven, W. A. Mozart, F. Liszt, N. Paganini and J. Mánes stayed at the chateau. Since 1961 a music competition of young pianists and violinists called Beethoven´s Hradec takes place there in honour of the famous composer.

The history of the chateau stretches back to the second half of the 15th century, when the chateau was founded by lords from Vrbno. The present appearance came with the late-baroque reconstruction, which, however, preserved the renaissance arcades in the court and clock tower. So a unique combination of renaissance and baroque styles was developed.
It includes a historical interior decorated by precious rococo mural wall paintings and lavishly furnis-hed from the 18th and 19th centuries, in addition to the chateau gallery, hunting armoury and chateau library. Its oldest part and pride of the town is the quadrangle, which with its design is among the high points of medieval town planning in our country. About 50 burgher houses, built in late gothic or renaissance styles, often with archways, are protected in the square and adjacent streets. The so-called Old Post Office, a house with a one-storey arcade recessed balcony, built by unknown Italian builders in the style of Tuscany renaissance, is also a unique structure. The baroque Marian Column from 1710 and a fountain from 1930 dominate the square. Discontinuous segments of town fortifications from the 14th and 15th centuries and a wall with hexagonal bastion from the beginning of the 17th century have been preserved along the core of the town.

PŘÍBOR
The town of Příbor is one of the oldest in northeastern Moravia. In 1251 it was promoted to the status of a town by Přemysl Margrave of Moravia, later King Přemysl Otakar II. The historical core of the town was named after the famous native Sigmund Freud. Town houses in the centre are mostly renaissance with baroque adaptations. The gothic parish Church of Nativity of the Virgin Mary with a colossal tower dates back to the period of town´s founding. Late in the 17th century piarists came to the town and built a large college there, where the museum with a permanent exhibition devoted to Sigmund Freud is now located.

OPAVA REGION PRESERVED HISTORICAL VILLAGES
LIPINA 14 km south-west of Opava
It is the only village in the Opava Region with preserved buildings, which are uni-que evidence of the original folk archi-tecture. The first mention of the village dates back to 1377. There are two lines of gable-fronted houses with even develop-ment. These are one-storey, mostly brick dwellings as well as farm buildings from the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries. Local farmsteads can be classified as the East-Sudetic type. From the viewpoint of functional use, the cattle shed type is typical for all houses. Vertical articulation of an attic, where the loft was situated on the lower floor and the upper level served as the granary, is characteristic of these buildings.

HEŘMANOVICE
Originally a miner´s village with ham-mer mill and lime production is men-tioned as a town for the first time in 1339. However, during the 14th cen-tury it was degraded to a village again. This picturesque village at the foothills of the Jeseníky Mountains is, in additi-on to its history, of interest also becau-se of the fact that timbered ground-
-floor houses, built during the 19th century, have been preserved up to the present. These buildings are the part of a unique conserved complex of folk architecture in the Bruntál Region. The parish Church of St. Andrew with the bounding wall and gate has also been placed in the register of protected his-torical buildings. The church is a land-mark of the village.

The place was named after hermits, who had lived here and the last of whom died in 1874. Wooden structures built in the national style by the noted Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič dominate at Pus-tevny. In 1891, with the boom in tourism, the first tourist shelter lodge called Pústevňa (Hermitage) was built there. In the course of time the Šumná (Pretty) stone lodge, the Cyrilka observation pa-vilion, the Maměnka (Mummy) shelter lodge and Libušín eating house followed. With their folk architecture these huts are a unique art noveau specimen of the folk art impact on modern ar-chitecture. In winter Pustevny becomes a much sought after ski resort. A 4-kilometre-long ridge route runs from Pustevny, past the Cyrilka obser-vation pavilion and the statue of the pagan god Radegast to the summit of Radhošť with its woo-den Chapel of St. Cyril and Methodius, regarded as the symbol of the Beskydy.

FOLK ARCHITECTURE WOODEN CHURCHES
The Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mountains can boast of not only bewitching nature, but also charming folk log-houses. A unique complex of more than twenty wooden churches, built in the course of five centuries, can be found here. Regarding the concentration, diversi-ty of styles and state of repair of individual buildings, the complex is viewed as unique in Central Europe.
The Church of Corpus Christi in Guty ranks among the oldest (1563) of the woo-den Beskydy churches. Its unique dominant feature is the L-shaped choir with arabes-ques decorations.
THE CHURCH OF ST. FREDERICK IN BÍLÁ
The Church of St. Cyril and Methodius in Hrčava, the youngest (1936) of the wooden churches, at first sight appears to be very simple, however a richly engraved baptismal font is hidden inside. The borders of the Czech, Slovak and Polish Republics meet in the village of Hrčava. Three joint granite blocks with national coats of arms of the respective countries and their names have been erected here.
At first sight the Church of the Holy Trinity in Gruň is attractive with by the decoration of the main vessel walls, cornice and timber de-corations. Originally a single-nave building from 1887 it stood alone on the ridge as a landmark of the landscape and it was visible from a distance. At present it is largely hid-den among trees.
The Church of St. Prokop and Barbara, a somewhat exotic-ap-pearing wooden church is located between Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem and Čeladná. It is from Transcarpa-thian Russia and it was transported to our country during the so-called First Republic. As to its architecture, the three stepped steeples will catch your eye at first sight.

MICHAL MINE
The history of Michal Mine stretches back to 1843, when the Austrian Empire started to place two shafts in Michálkovice at Ostrava. One of them was the so-called Michálkovice shaft No 3 renamed Michal after the deceased c.k. court councillor Michael Laier. It is a particularly valuable authentic in-dustrial area as to the building and technical aspects. The reconstruction completed in 1915, carried out according to the design of the eminent architect František Fiala, had a fundamental influence on the shape of the mine.
A unique complex of electrical hoists and underground compressors from the beginnings of electrification, as well as miner´s bathrooms, a former lamp room, transporter crane tracks with coal tippers and a shaft building with cages. The sightseeing route allows you to go through the same route that was daily travelled by miners when comming to work. Thus, the non-arranged exhibition has a character of the “last working day“. The operations ceased in Michal Mine in 1994.

The largest mining museum in the Czech Republic is located at the foot of Landek Hill, which is a world-renowned locality for geology, archeology, history, natural science and mining science. It has also become noted by the discovery of Landek´s Venus. It is the only slender Venus in Europe.
Collections of the original mining museum from 1905 and of Ostrava-Karviná´s mining since 1782 to the present can be seen in the museum. Exhibitions of machinery, which is fully operative and is displayed in operation, acquaint visitors with particular mining occupations. Original adits in seams named Albrecht and Fratišek (Francis) from the first half of the 19th century, which have been open to the public, offer an authentic view of mining beginnings. On their way to the mining exhibition visi-tors can stop in a typical miner´s tavern - “Harenda Barborka“, the interior of which is well-decorated with mining objects. A sports and recreational park, rope centre, bicycle path and children´s centre are parts of the museum.

JESENÍKY MOUNTAINS PLACES OF LOOKOUTS
PRADĚD MOUNTAIN
The majestic peak of Praděd (1,491 metres above sea level) in the mountain chain of Hrubý Jeseník is very attractive for tourists and it is a frequented destination in summer as well as winter. Praděd is the highest mountain in Moravia. In 1970-1980 a 145-metre telecommunication tower was built here as a premier ob-servation place. If weather permits, it is possible to see the Krkonoše Mountains and the High Tatras from here. It has been erected in place of a stone observation tower from the early 20th century, which had the interesting shape of a romanesque castle watchtower. Later the stone observation tower was replaced by the present structure with a meteorological station, restaurant and an observation point. There are ideal conditions for winter and summer sports.

MORAVIAN-SILESIANREGION
The Moravian-Silesian Region is situated in the north-east of the Czech Republic. It is a varied region with a lot of diversity, which can offer lots of interesting attractions to tourists and holiday--makers. In this publication you can be inspired to visit well-known cultural, historical and tech-nical sights of our region. Lovers of chateaux and castles, of typical folk architecture and historical preservations will be thrilled without a doubt. Hi-kers will be able to see the landscape from loo-kouts. The special character of our region lies in its unique technical monuments.
The region is divided into six tourist areas, each of which has its specific character. In addition to its beautiful nature, the Beskydy Mountains can of-fer a number of monuments of folk architecture, especially unique wooden chapels and buildings. The beautiful landscape of the Odra River Ba-sin, with the charming floodplains of the Odra Ri-ver is enhanced by a number of chateaux, ruins of castles and three preserved historical towns. Areas of the Ostrava Region (Ostravsko) and Karviná Region (Karvinsko) have exceptional scenery that is brought out by the tradition of deep mining of bituminous coal since primeval times. Numerous technical monuments, which are often world-uni-que, correspond to that. Though the Opava Regi-on (Opavsko) is a small strip of land it offers a wide range of attractions and monuments. Especially chateaux, historical towns and also well-preserved military fortresses from the pre-World War II fortifi-cation lines are among the attractions. The Jesení-ky Mountains, which are ruled by the local good mountain ghost called “Praděd“, are a popular de-stination of tourists not only thanks to beautiful na-tural attractions but also to a number of chateaux and ruins of castles or the oldest narrow-gauge railway and steam train in Central Europe.
Lovers of monuments, welcome to our country!
