ConferenceLeader:RadhikaNatarajan,[email protected]:Vollum121,Thursday,3–4PM;Friday,3–4PM;andbyappointmentThe British Empirewas built onmigrations both forced and free, and in this coursewewillexamine particular migration stories in wider imperial and global contexts. Some of themigrantsthatwewillexamineincludesettlercolonists,enslavedpersons,transportedradicals,colonialofficers,missionaries,merchants,andindenturedandmigrantlaborers.ThecoursewillpresentabroadchronologicalsurveyoftheBritishimperialworldsince1700,payingattentiontopolitical,economic,social,andculturaldynamics.Thefinalprojectforthiscoursewillbeadigitalexhibition,collaborativelycreatedbystudents.DigitalHumanitiesIn this course, we will engage with the methods and principles of digital humanities. Themajority of the assignments are available digitally and the final project for the course is acollectively createddigital exhibition. These digital resources, tools, andprojectswill help us

If you have areasonableexcuseformissingclass—religiousholidays,illness,orfamilyemergency—itisyourresponsibility to letme know ahead of time.Unexcused absenceswill negatively affect yourgrade,andmorethanoneunexcusedabsencecouldleadtofailingthecourse.
Asuccessfulconferencedependsuponpreparedandactiveparticipants.Fordiscussions,givethe conference your undivided attention by turning off your cell phone and putting it away.Foodisprohibitedintheclassroom,unlessyoubringenoughtosharewitheveryone.Bringtheassignedreadings,aswellasameansoftakingnotes.Considerhowyoucanfosterthoughtfuldialogue. When you speak, support your claims with examples from the texts. Attentivelisteningisasimportantasspeakingtofacilitatingconferencediscussion.Dismissiveorhostilecommentswillnotbetolerated.Thehonorprinciplenotonlyappliestoourdiscussionsinclass,butalsotoyourwrittenwork.Yourworkmust be your own. It is your responsibility (with the help of others) to learn thestandardsofpropercitationandattribution.Inthiscourse,wewillusetheChicagoManualofStyle’sNotesandBibliographysystem.ComputersinClassYouarerequiredtobringacomputertoclassforallDigitalHumanitiesworkshops,andyoumayalsoneedtobringyourcomputertoclassforordinaryconferencemeetingsasthemajorityofourclassreadingsaredigital.Ifyoudonothaveaccesstoalaptop,pleaseletmeknowandwewillborrowoneforyou.A conference is a collective experience and requires the active participation of allmembers.Togetherwewillcreateacomputingpolicythatbalancesuseofcomputerswithbeingpresentinoursharedconversation.

Thisprojectcontainsfivecomponents.BioPage: Createaprofileofyourselffeaturingadigitalimageandrelevantmetadata.ItemPage: Createanitempageforyourobjectwithrelevantmetadata.ExhibitPage: 2000word essay on an object. The final draft of the essaywill appear on the
exhibit page, and will describe and analyze the object, contextualize ithistorically, and offer an argument about the object’s significance. Buildingtowards this essay, you will be required to write three subsidiary essays: anobjectanalysis,abibliographicessay,andahistoriographicalessay.
GroupPage: Thecourseisdividedintofivecategoriesofmigrants(settlers,enslavedAfricans,
colonial officials, indentured laborers, andmetropolitanmigrants). Eachobjectbelongstooneofthesecategories.Thestudentswhoseobjectsareinthesamegroupwillcollectivelywritea2000wordessay introducingthemainthemesofthemigrantcategoryandrelatingtheobjectswithinthegrouptoeachother.
