Why Study History or Political

Science at CHC?

A person studying History or Political Science at Chestnut Hill College will become a whole person – someone who can think critically, who asks the right questions, who is a leader and not led, and who is an astute observer of the world. The Political Science Club and the History Club are two of the oldest and most active student organizations on campus, sponsoring voter registration drives, popular on-campus film series, guest lectures, trips to places like Independence Hall and the Daily Show. Our students have the opportunity to earn academic credit by working as research assistants for their professors, studying abroad, and to working as interns in the college archives and our on-campus NGO that has official standing with the United Nations.

Learning Advantages at CHC?

This department provides a true holistic education with a focus in collaborative and interactive learning. Class size is small and students are expected to produce evidence of critical thinking and integrated learning on essay exams, papers, and oral presentations. Students have the opportunity to meet international scholars during the department-sponsored “Legacy Conference” series, attend conference sessions, and the receptions for keynote speakers. Past conferences included:

• The Legacy of JFK (2002)• World War II (2005)• American Civil War (2011)

As one of the most historic areas in our nation, Philadelphia offers majors a plethora of unique and diverse institutions to get “hands-on-learning” to complement their academic course of study.

“Political Science is a great major for those looking for a prosperous career.

Political Science majors can find work as lobbyists, political aides, or

may continue on to law school for a career in the legal field. It’s the diversity of the major that appeals

to so many students.” - Christopher Hess, Political Science Major (2013)
