W H A T ’ S T H I S S O U R D O U G H A L L A B O U T ? Unlike other kinds of bread dough, sourdough uses naturally occurring yeast in place of baker’s yeast. After the yeast comes into contact with dough, it begins to rise very slowly, creating the bread’s distinctive sour flavor. Because sourdough takes so long to rise, bakeries usually use a small amount of dough, called a starter, to keep the yeast alive rather than letting it rise all over again for each loaf. The starter can be stored in a warm, dark place and used to “start” each new loaf by adding a small amount to the fresh dough before baking.
Some bakers, like San Francisco’s iconic Boudin, have passed their starter down through generations. Boudin’s founder collected the yeast that is still alive in its sourdough starter in 1849. This starter, also called the “mother dough,” is part of every loaf of Boudin Sourdough and is as old as the state of California and is a piece of living (and edible) history.

THE LEGEND OF THE GOLDEN HYDRANT
During the famous 1906 earthquake almost all of the city’s network of hydrants failed. One hydrant located near Dolores Park did not and is credited with saving the historic Mission neighborhood from a certain destruction. The heroic and still functional hydrant is freshly painted each April 18, and serves as a monument to the resilience of the city and the bravery of its fire fighters.
BIRTHPLACE OF THE UNITED NATIONS
Few people realize that the first home of the United Nations was just across the street. In fact the site of San Francisco’s largest farmer’s market is located at the site where the UN charter was signed on 26 June 1945 by its first fifty member states.
ANCHOR STEAM BEER
Anchor Steam is America’s original craft brewery and has operated continuously since the 1890s specializing in a special style of “steam beer” that traces its origins back to the gold rush and a style of primitive beer popular with miners. The brewery located in nearby Potrero Hill offers daily tours and tastings.
T H EI N C R E D I B L EF L I N E One of the best ways to get around is to take the Historic F-Line Streetcar. Nothing can quite match the excitement and nostalgia of riding on an Italian streetcar from 1928, or an English “boat tram” from 1934. It’s a great way to get down to Ferry Building, Waterfront, Fisherman’s Wharf or the Castro District.
