A walk through history

For the past 35 years, Columbia International College has delivered high quality education for students from over 72 countries. Our unique Total Care Education System® has given students solid foundations in learning, developed skills for independent living and provided great opportunities for personal growth. Total Care Education® allows our graduates to excel not only in academics, but also in life.

As we look back on the past years, we are proud of all our staff who’s dedication and commitment contributed to the growth and success of Columbia International College.

“What started as a small independent venture in 1979, with six staff members and nine enrolled students from one country, has now become the largest private junior and senior boarding school in Canada.”

1979 The start of a small independent ventureIn 1979, our school was founded in the city of Hamilton under the name of “Columbia Secondary School” . Our first campus was a six classroom school at 360 Mohawk Road West (formerly Mohawk Trail School) which hosted 4 teachers and 9 students from 1 country - Hong Kong.

Mrs. Christine Davis was our first principal, and our current Executive Director, Mr. Clement Chan, was Vice-principal.

Staff in 1980In 1980, the school grew to an enrollment of close to 100 students. Mr. Rambarran joined the teaching faculty in February 1980.

By 1988, student enrollment had grown to over 300.To meet the needs of our growing student body, our campus relocated to Westdale at 1033 Main Street West, which is now known as our Maple Building. Parents were requesting better and more comprehensive care for their children - our students. In response to the demand by parents, our first residence was built in 1990 and 200 students were housed in this new facility. The residence included an on-site kitchen and offered meal services that included all-you-can-eat.

Our name was changed from Columbia Secondary School to Columbia International College in 1991.

Junior Middle School programstarts 2008Recognizing the need to nurture personal strengths and abilities of younger students within a safe and healthy environment that provides academic quality and character building, Columbia established its Junior Middle School (JMS) program in 2008 for students at the grade 7 and grade 8 level.

The JMS program offers our youngest students unique academic programming that emphasizes inquiry and higher-order thinking skills, all while promoting experiential learning and global citizenship.

Personalized care and communication are at the core of the JMS program. As such, communication on student progress, designated houseparents and all-day supervision are essential program components.

The Evolution of

Residence & Meals Service

33

Residence life plays a very important role at Columbia. Residence living allows students to develop social and emotional skills; skills that are critical in university life and their future careers. Our residence programming gives students the tools they need to succeed in the future in a comfortable and safe environment.

1500 Students call Home to:1990 Oak Hall, our first residence opened at 1029 Main Street West.1995 Linden Hall, our second residence opened on Catherine Street.2001 Pine Hall for Boys, our third residence opened on Sanatorium Road.2011 Arkledun Hall, our fourth residence opened on Arkledun Avenue.2012 Pine Hall for Girls, our fifth residence opened on Sanatorium Road, next to Pine Boys.

In total, we provide 1500 residence beds for students to call home.

Meals ServiceFrom no meal service toserving 4 meals a day, rain or shineIn 1979, at our first campus on Mohawk Road, we did not provide a meal service, and students did not prepare lunches to bring to school. Instead, they walked to a nearby corner store at Mohwak and Garth to purchase buns, cold cuts and chocolate milk. They would then take these items to the lunch area and prepare sandwiches.

In 1988, after relocating to our Maple Building on Main Street West, Mrs. Judy Cheng and her family operated a snack and meal service counter at the school to facilitate the needs of our students.

In 1989, Columbia began providing students with a professional food services. Currently, Sodexo Food Service prepares over 7500 meals a day to our students and staff.

At Mohawk Road, classrooms also served as the eating area for students.

Columbia’s International Cuisine Dinner is one of our most popular events. Every month a geographic region is selected and students work together as a team to organize a dinner party. Students choose regional entertainment, music, and games while also having a chance to work with the Sodexo Executive Chef to design the meal that will be served. This event is open for all students to participate in, and is a great opportunity to invite friends, learn about different cultures from around the world, and celebrate diversity.
