    Name derived from Chinese word tai-peng,meaningEternal Peace

    History started duringmiddle of 19th century Different warlords fought overtin-fields in

    inhabitants.

    BeforeColonization The Portuguese, the Dutch, the Japanese and the British colonized

    Malaysia before independence in 1957. Brought the Chinese and Indians-mining industry

    They brought -customs, belief system, religion and rituals andsporting activities.

    the Malay's sports culture -influence by animism, which is a beliefthat a vital force existed in both human and animate objects.

    Some examples -silat; a form of self defense which involvesmeditation and spiritual powers,

    -kiteflying; it was believed that originally kites were flown as a

    magical rite in association with the harvesting of the rice fields,.

    -top-spinning; which was practiced bythe aborigines whobelieved that lightning is the flashing of top cords in heaven andthunder is the murmuring of the tops as they spin,

    -cock-fighting; involved the shaman specialist who were seen to

    recite and blow incantation to the birds for blessing and charmedwater sprinkled over them.

    The Taiping folks are still steep in their tradition. Traditional gamesespecially batu seremban, guli, congkak dan teng-teng are verymuch played by children.

    Indians - the control of the SriVijay an Empire in the MalayaArchipelago led to the influence of Hinduism in sports-performedonly on special occassions.

    Therefore, sporting activities were much influenced by Animism andHinduism.

    British has influenced the most on the development of sports

    culture and contemporary elite sports in Malaya.

    The introduction to colonial sports such as soccer, cricket, andrugby spread like a wild fire among the local community.

    In the early days, sports was managed by clubs and associationsrun voluntarily by sports enthusiasts.

    Clubs were formed to manage training and competitions were heldbetween clubs and villages.

    The construction of the Merdeka Stadium - the first sportsdevelopment initiated by Tengku. The stadium facilitated especiallyon football.

    The Merdeka Football Tournament that was part of the Merdeka

    celebration soon became one of the most prestigious footballtournaments in Asia.
