38 Performing Operations
Hitachi Storage Adapter for Microsoft® System Center Virtual Machine Manager v01.3.0 User’s Guide
To create a VM by using the linked host path feature, follow these steps:
1. In the Virtual Machine Details View, right-click the VM to bring up a context menu. You can choose any VM.
2. From the context menu, choose Move VM to SMB Share.
3. As prompted, provide the following information:
FileServer
FileSystem
SMB Share name
The following operations take place:
If an SMB share does not exist, the adapter creates one on the file server. The share has the following attributes:
SMB Share name
Share Path is <VMName>__<FileSystemName> __<SMBShareName>
FileServer
FileSystem
Other SMB share fields are set to defaults. The Transfer To Object Replication field is disabled.
14. In the Hyper-V server, create a Windows symbolic link to link the SMB
share to <drive>:\Program Files\Hitachi\SCVMM-Storage\VMs\<vm name>\.
15. If necessary, create a SMB Share subfolder under <vm name> called
<VMName>__<FileSystemName> __<SMBShareName>)
16. Link this new or existing folder on Hyper-V server to a share on the file server.
17. Move all files in the current VM path to C:\Program Files\Hitachi\SCVMM-Storage\VMs\<vm name>\VM name __FileSystem __SMBShare).
18. Update the virtual hard disk (VHD) path of the VM to the new path:
<drive>:\Program Files\Hitachi\SCVMM-Storage\VMs\<vm name>\<VMName>__<FileSystemName> __<SMBShareName>.
Virtual Machine Cloning
Add a Hyper-V host before cloning a VM. In addition, you must configure new a
subsystem.
Performing Operations 39
Hitachi Storage Adapter for Microsoft® System Center Virtual Machine Manager v01.3.0 User’s Guide
Under Virtual Machine Details, the context menu pops up. Right-click a VM name. The context menu includes two menu items:
Clone VM with Snapshot
Clone VM with ShadowImage
Cloning a VM with Snapshot
1. If you click the Snapshot menu item and only one P-VOL is present, a dialog window opens, requesting that you enter a VM name. All the valid
HTI pool numbers in a subsystem are available from a dropdown list in the dialog window.
If the VM Name is empty or exceeds 255 characters, an error message appears.
2. Click the OK button to complete the cloning.
A designated folder is created for mounting the V-VOL. If the Windows registry subkey or the InstallRoot value, which is created by the installer, is not
available, the default folder is c:\Program Files\Hitachi\Hitachi SCVMM Storage\VMs. A new sub-folder <VM name>\diskN is created under this folder.
Cloning VM with Snapshot (HUS)
1. If you click the Snapshot menu item and HUS is detected, a dialog
window opens. It requests a VM name and pair name. All the valid HDP pool numbers are included in a dropdown list in the dialog window and are treated as management pool numbers and replication pool numbers.
HUS snapshots require a management pool ID and replication pool ID. Management pool and replication pools are HDP pools and can be the same one.
An error message appears if the VM Name is empty or exceeds 255 characters, or if the Pair name is empty or exceeds 31 characters. The
40 Performing Operations
Hitachi Storage Adapter for Microsoft® System Center Virtual Machine Manager v01.3.0 User’s Guide
characters must be alphanumeric or one of the following characters: %, *, +, -, ., /, =, @, _, :, [, or ].
2. Click the OK button to create the clone.
To create a VM clone using HUS snapshot, the clone operation finds the P-VOL WWN and maps the V-VOL to the Hyper-V server.
Cloning a VM with ShadowImage
1. When you click the Shadow Image menu item, a dialog window opens and requests a VM name. All the valid HTI pool numbers on a RAID
storage, or all the valid HDP pool numbers on a HUS storage appear in a dropdown list in the dialog window.
If the VM Name is empty or exceeds 255 characters, an error message pops up. The clone operation should find an unused consistency group ID. After the clone is completed, the clone operation frees the
consistency group ID.
2. After you click the OK button, the clone is created.
Cloning an Hitachi NAS Virtual Machine
1. In the Virtual Machine Details view, right-click a VM name to bring up the context menu, where only HNAS VM cloning is available.
2. Choose Clone VM Using HNAS Clone.
3. When prompted, enter a new VM name for the clone.
The software creates a cloned VM and an SMB share.

Provisioning LUNs
LUN Provisioning for Fibre Channel
Perform these steps for LUN provisioning:
1. Select Create Logical Unit (FC).
2. In the LUN box, select an HDP pool, Parity Group, or RAID Group. There
are no minimum or maximum buttons in the LUN provisioning box.
By default, Auto remains checked. If the Auto checkbox is checked, the Ldev ID textbox does not appear. Instead, the adapter creates the logical unit with the next unused LUN number.
3. From the Size drop-down menu, select GB or TB. GB is the default. Enter integers.
Floating point values are not accepted.
You cannot enter any characters other than integer.
For a VSP Gx00 HDP pool, 60TB is the maximum size.
For all other subsystems, the maximum is 2TB.
4. Click the OK button.
5. The behavior of the Port and Host drop-down menus depends on whether
a WWN is present. If it is, only the host groups and ports with the WWN
are available. If no WWN is found, all host groups are available.
6. After a new logical unit is mapped to the Hyper-V host, refresh the RAID group/HDP pool (see below) to show the logical unit.

LUN Provisioning for iSCSI
Add the Hitachi Unified Storage (HUS) system or the Hitachi VSP Gx00.
In the LUN box, select an HDP pool, Parity Group, or RAID Group. There are no minimum or maximum buttons in the LUN provisioning box.
1. Select Create Logical Unit (iSCSI).
2. The adapter queries the iSCSI target objects using the currently selected host’s IQN. When a target is found, the Create Logical Unit (iSCSI) dialog box appears.
3. If the Auto checkbox is checked, the Ldev ID text box does not appear. Instead, the adapter creates the logical unit with the next unused LUN
number.
4. From the Size drop-down menu, select GB or TB. GB is the default. Enter an integer.
o Floating point values are not accepted.
o You cannot enter any characters other than integer.
o For a VSP Gx00 HDP pool, 60TB is the maximum size.
o For all other subsystems, the maximum is 2TB.
5. In the LUN text box, allow automatic numbering by entering -1 and
checking the Auto box, or enter a label for the LUN.
If IQN is found, the Port dropdown box and iSCSI target text block display only the iSCSI target and ports that have IQN mapping.
6. Click the OK button.

Default Protocol Setting
Caution Because HTTP is not a secure protocol, we do not recommend using the HTTP protocol. In a secured environment, use the HTTPS protocol option.
The default protocol used in the Hitachi Storage adapter to communicate Web API is HTTPS, but you can change it from HTTPS to HTTP and vice versa.
Steps to change the protocol setting:
1. Go to the Service folder inside the installation folder-
C:\Program Files\Hitachi\Hitachi SCVMM Storage\Service\
2. Open the HiSCVMMStorageWebServiceHost.exe.config configuration file
in Notepad. Note the follow information in the file:
Performing Operations 47

Default value set for protocol is HTTPS in this file-
<appSettings>
<!-- CommunicationType possible value: HTTP or HTTPS -->
<add key="CommunicationType" value="HTTPS"/>
</appSettings>
3. To change from HTTPS to HTTP, edit HTTPS to HTTP this way:
<add key="CommunicationType" value="HTTP"/>
Restart the System Center Virtual Machine Manager and launch the Hitachi Storage Adapter from the Home menu. It shows the updated protocol setting.
In the screenshot below, HTTPS is now unchecked, which means that the default communication protocol is now HTTP.

Unable to Access Web Service Using HTTPS
When this happens, you see the pop-up message below upon launching the Hitachi adapter and the log file reports the information shown in the following
text.
[0001] [03/26/15-22:54:06] [Logger.d] ERROR [E2B0200F] {MainVM::.ctor}:Failed to get storage device configurations. An error occurred while making the HTTP request to https://localhost:2024/HitachiStorageManagementWebServices/SCVMStorageManager/StorageManager/GetStorageDeviceConfigurations.
This could be due to the fact that the server certificate is not configured properly with HTTP.SYS in the HTTPS case. This could also be caused by a
mismatch of the security binding between the client and the server.
Solution
Follow these steps:
Go to the folder C:\Program Files\Hitachi\Hitachi SCVMM Storage\Cert.
1. Double-click on HitachiStorageSCVMM.cer certificate.
2. Click on the Details tab and get the Thumbprint value.
3. Open the Administrative Tools and launch IIS manager.
4. Expand the server, Sites, and select Default Web Site.
5. Right-click on Default Web Site and select Edit Bindings.

Thumbprint values for both certificates, one in IIS manager and second inside Cert folder in installation directory, must be same.
9. Check for a link on web browser, it should respond:
https://localhost:2024/HitachiStorageManagementWebServices/SCVMStorageManager/StorageManager/GetStorageDeviceConfigurations
10. If you can open above link, your issue is resolved.
Windows crashes during addition of a subsystem
If SCVMM windows crash while you add a storage system, follow the instructions below.
Solution
Uninstall this application and delete the installation folder, C:\Program Files\Hitachi\Hitachi SCVMM Storage. Install the application and then try to add
the subsystem again.
Troubleshooting 53
Hitachi Storage Adapter for Microsoft® System Center Virtual Machine Manager v01.3.0 User’s Guide
Error occurs while getting available LUNs from the virtual
storage subsystem
This error shows up in the hivcenter.log file, when you are trying to create a Snapshot or ShadowImage clone of a VM and no free LDEV IDs are available to
assign to the cloned LDEV.
Solution
To overcome this problem, always keep some free LDEV IDs in Virtual Storage resource group. You can use following raidcom command to assign a free Ldev id to resource group.
raidcom get ldev -ldev_list undefined
raidcom unmap resource -ldev_id <Free_Ldev_ID> -virtual_ldev_id <Free_Ldev_ID>
raidcom add resource -resource_name <Resource_Group_Name> -ldev_id <Free_Ldev_ID>
raidcom map resource -ldev_id <Free_Ldev_ID> -virtual_ldev_id <Free_Ldev_ID>
These commands will assign a free ldev id Free_Ldev_ID from Meta resource
group to Virtual Storage resource group Resource_Group_Name. Whenever user try to create a VM clone on Virtual Storage VM, it takes these free IPs to
assign new S-VOL.

Over Provisioning Threshold
Threshold value for DP pool over-provision warning (default 100%) and limit (default 130%).
P
Parity Group
A parity group, also called an array group, is a group of hard disk drives (HDDs) that form the basic unit of storage for RAID subsystems. All
HDDs in a parity group must have the same physical capacity.

RAID Group
A redundant array of inexpensive drives (RAID) that have the same capacity and are treated as one group for data storage and recovery. A RAID group contains both user data and parity information, which allows
the user data to be accessed in the event that one or more of the drives within the RAID group are not available. The RAID level of a RAID group
determines the number of data drives and parity drives and how the data is “striped” across the drives. For RAID1, user data is duplicated within the RAID group, so there is no parity data for RAID1 RAID
groups.
A RAID group can also be called an array group or a parity group.
