CHAIRMANWelcome to our first production of 2013, ‘Annie Get Your Gun’.

I first performed at this theatre with Hitchin Thespians in 1988 in

our last production of this show. It’s great to be doing this updated

version of Irving Berlin’s classic but this time in the role of

Frank Butler rather than a very new member of the chorus.

2013 is already shaping into an exciting year for us. Later this

year we will be returning to the Gordon Craig Theatre with the ever-popular

musical Grease which has finally been re-released to amateurs. We’ll be looking

for lots of young people to join us for this show and you won’t have to be a

member to audition. If you’d like to be in this show please contact our secretary

or log onto our website to look out for details. If, like me, you’re too old to join the cast of Grease then hopefully

we’ll see you at the show in September. Tickets are available now from the box office, so maybe you should get

them to avoid disappointment! In the meantime, sit back and enjoy this wonderful Broadway classic.

  • Act ONEWhen Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show visits Ohio, Frank

Butler, the show's handsome star challenges anyone in

town to a shooting match. Foster Wilson, a local hotel

owner, doesn't appreciate the Wild West Show taking over

his hotel, so Frank gives him a side bet of one hundred

dollars on the match. Annie Oakley enters and shoots a

bird off Dolly Tate's hat, and then explains her simple

backwoods ways to Wilson with the help of her siblings.

When Wilson learns she's a brilliant shot, he enters her in

the shooting match against Frank Butler.

While Annie waits for the match to start, she meets Frank

and falls instantly in love with him, not knowing he will be

her opponent. When she asks Frank if he likes her, he

explains that the girl he wants will "wear satin and smell

of cologne". At the shooting match, Annie wins, and is

invited to join the Wild West Show.

Over time, Frank becomes enamoured with the

tomboyish Annie. Frank plans to propose to Annie, but

she becomes a star, Chief Sitting Bull adopts her into the

Sioux tribe. Hurt, Frank walks out on Annie and the show,

joining the competing Pawnee Bill's show.

Act TWOThe Buffalo Bill show tours Europe with Annie as the star,

but the show goes broke. Annie, now well-dressed and

more refined still longs for Frank. Buffalo Bill and Pawnee

Bill plot a merger of the two companies, each assuming

the other has the money necessary for the merger. They

all meet at a grand reception, where they soon discover

both shows are broke. Annie, however, has received

sharpshooting medals from all the rulers of Europe worth

one hundred thousand dollars, and she decides to sell

the medals to finance the merger.

When Frank appears, he and Annie confess their love and

decide to marry, although with comically different ideas:

Frank wants "some little chapel," while Annie wants a big

wedding. When Annie shows Frank her medals, Frank

again has his pride hurt, and they call off the merger

and the wedding. They agree to one last shooting duel -

"Anything You Can Do". Annie deliberately loses to Frank

to soothe his ego, and they finally reconcile, deciding to

    marry and merge the shows.

  • Dorothy Fields had the idea for a musical about AnnieOakley, to star her friend, Ethel Merman. Producer MikeTodd turned the project down, so Fields approached anew producing team, Richard Rodgers and OscarHammerstein II. After the success of their first musical collaboration, ‘Oklahoma!’, Rodgers and Hammersteinhad decided to become producers of both their owntheatrical ventures and those by other authors. Theyagreed to produce and asked Jerome Kern to composethe music; Fields would write the lyrics, and she and herbrother Herbert would write the book.

The show's eventual hit song ‘There's No Business LikeShow Business’, was almost left out of the show becauseBerlin mistakenly got the impression that RichardRodgers did not like it. In imitation of the structure of‘Oklahoma!’, a secondary romance between two of themembers of the Wild West Show was added to the musical during its development. For the 1999 revival,Peter Stone revised the libretto, eliminating what wereconsidered insensitive references to American Indians,

including the songs‘Colonel Buffalo Bill’’and ‘I'm An Indian Too’.

The 1950 Metro Goldwyn Mayer movie release wasdirected by George Sidney. Despite some productionand casting problems (Judy Garland had to withdrawfrom the film because of ill health), the film won theAcademy Award for best score and received three othernominations. Star Betty Hutton was recognized with aGolden Globe nomination for Best Actress.

The 1986 stage version was the first London revival of Irving Berlin's musical, and starred American rockmusician Suzi Quatro as Annie Oakley and Eric Flynn asFrank Butler. The revival was a David Gilmore ChichesterFestival Theatre production. It toured in the UK thenmoved to the Aldwych Theatre in London's West End.

  • Do you enjoy singing? If so you will receive a warm welcome any Tuesday evening from 7.30 to 10.00 pm.We love to see new faces, particularly tenors and basses, although sopranos and altos will also be most welcome. Each year we perform concerts in which the choice of music varies from songs from the musicals, through opera to oratorio. The whole object is to enjoy singing and hopefully make new friends along the way.
