    Huddersfield Jazz Guitar Society

    Newsletter No. 20 April 2013

    Hi Jazz Guitar Fans,

Whilst there wasn't the biggest turn out the society has ever had there

was some fine playing by the players that came down.

The evening began with Tom who kicked off the proceedings with Cheekto Cheek. This was a lovely solo arrangement with a gentle beginning beforemoving into a beautiful, rhythmic chord melody rendition of the tune.

Tom was joined by Martin for Artieiellery Lourde. This was a nice swingrendition of the Django classic with some good interplay between the twoguitars and some really considered accompaniment by both players.

Robin was next to perform. He played two originals. The first was calledLittle Blues. Moving into modern technology (for us jazz players at least)Robin brought a loop pedal and set up a walking bass accompaniment to soloover for his first tune. The second piece was called Change of Heart again byRobin. This was another piece which used the loop pedal to good effect. Thisset up a more balanced and effective accompaniment.

Dave and Chris were next, opening up with I've never been in lovebefore. This was an assured and musical reading of this beautiful tune. As aduo they always deliver and this was no exception. This piece was rhythmically

assured with nice soloing from both players. Piece two was Blue in Green. This began with a solo chord intro from Dave before Chris bought in some very

subtle accompaniment. A difficult tune with some tricky changes this is one yousadly don't hear that often on guitar. Tune three, She's a Woman. A reallyinteresting arrangement of this Beatles classic which worked very well. Theinterplay between the players was very effective, splitting the melody betweenthe guitars.

    Darren and Adam Hinchliffe.

Freddie Freeloader and Autumn Leaves. Adam who is new to the societygave a very assured performance of these two pieces.

    Colin Lodge.

Colin kicked off with Misty. This was a sparse arrangement effectivelyharmonised with some really lovely chord voicings which complimented themelody really well. This was followed by an improvisation called Can I go withYou, moving through a number of tonal centres and having an almost pseudoSpanish quality to it. This was based around a Pat Metheny tune. Colin's thirdpiece was The Shadow of Your Smile, a brief rendition which wasunfortunately marred with a couple of memory slips. The final piece was aBlues in G which was a confident and assured performance.

Robin second spot began with Moon Glow, again with the trusty loop pedal. While this device is a nice addition to the armoury of the guitarist it has to beinputted accurately and doesn't accompany quite as effectively as anothermusician. Robin really went to town on the next one with masses of delay tocreate some different textures underneath and of course the loop pedal. Robinintroduced it as The Shape of Things to Come.

Back on more familiar sonic territory with Dave and Chris who began with Allthe Things You Are followed by a competent and enjoyable Blue Bossa.

The evening concluded with Martin and Darren playing the Herbie Hancockpiece Maiden Voyage.

The HJGS Library of II-V-I Patterns

We have two examples this month. The first from Adrian.

Here are two II-V-Is in Bb. They are based on Johnny Smith type closeharmony (and big stretch!) CHORDS. I stole there from Clint Strong, one ofthe best players around (and a personal favourite), during a jam together inTexas! Consequently, the pedigree thus far is: Johnny Smith, Clint Strong,Adrian Ingram, .! Start practicing!!!Your name

Practice both II-V-Is together as a progression.

    One now from Jamie Holroyd.

This short phrase shows how chords can be mixed with single line phrases and

features some of my favorite voicings and techniques. The first four notes of the chord

lick are from the D minor pentatonic scale with the first note been harmonized using a

    quartal 'so what' voicing.

Following this there is a descending dominant 7b9 arpeggio with the first two

notes harmonized using the popular symmetrical diminished shape before finally

resolving to the third of the I chord. Hope you have fun with it!
