SAFETY RULESPlease read this operators manual before handling your firearm. The following safety rules are placed in this manual by Heckler & Koch as animportant reminder that firearms safety is your responsibility. Firearms can be dangerous and can potentially cause serious injury, damage to property ordeath, if handled improperly.

1. Never point a firearm at anyone, or in any direction other than a SAFE direction, i.e. downrange.2. Treat all firearms as if they are always loaded.3. Keep your finger off the trigger and outside of the trigger guard until your sights are aligned on the target and you are ready to fire.4. Keep your finger off the trigger and outside of the trigger guard while loading or unloading the firearm.5. Keep your finger off the trigger and outside of the trigger guard while pulling the firearm out of the holster or while returning it to the

holster.6. Be sure of your target and the back stop beyond.7. Never give a firearm to or take a firearm from anyone unless the action is open and the magazine and/or chamber are free of any

ammunition or brass.8. Be sure that the ammunition you are using is factory loaded, is of the correct caliber for the firearm in which it is to be used, and that

it is not damaged in any way.9. Before firing, remove the magazine from the firearm, lock the action open, make sure the chamber is clear of any ammunition or brass,

and check the barrel of the unloaded firearm for any possible obstructions.10. Before firing any firearm that is unfamiliar to you, make sure that you understand exactly how it functions. A lack of familiarity with the

firearm can result in serious accidents. Attend a certified training course on any firearm which you intend to use or with which youare not sufficiently familiar.

11. Always wear hearing and eye protection when using your firearm.12. Keep all body parts, especially the hands and fingers, away from the muzzle to avoid injury or burns.13. Be sure that no part of either hand touches or interferes with the slide. The slide is moved backwards by the recoil force of the pistol

during firing and may cause serious injury.14. Firearms should be stored separately from ammunition and beyond the reach of children, and/or any untrained individuals.15. Avoid the use of any alcoholic beverages or drugs before and during the use of any firearm.16. Discharging firearms in poorly ventilated areas, cleaning firearms, or handling ammunition may result in exposure to lead, a substance

known to be associated with birth defects, reproductive harm, and other serious injury. Have adequate ventilation at all times. Washhands thoroughly after exposure.

STOP! Know how to clear this pistol before attempting to operate.

Clearing the Pistol The HK USP Pistol with Law Enforcement Modification (LEM) parts is not considered “clear”or safe unless:

1. The magazine is removed from the pistol and;2. The slide is locked to the rear and;3. The chamber is free of brass or ammunition

To Clear the HK USP Pistol with LEM parts:1. Make sure fingers are outside of the trigger guard and the pistol is pointed in a safe direction at all

times!2. Remove magazine - depress the magazine release lever and remove the magazine from the pistol.3. Open and lock slide - while pointing the pistol in a safe direction, lock the slide open by pulling the slide

rearward as you press the slide release upward. Watch for a cartridge or empty case to be ejected from thepistol.

4. Inspect chamber - inspect chamber for the presence of a cartridge or empty case by:• Visually viewing chamber through open ejection port and;• Physically inserting finger into chamber through ejection port to check for the presence of a cartridge or

empty case.

Remove any cartridges or empty cases from the chamber or from within the pistol.

The HK USP Pistol is now considered “Clear”.

The HK USP Pistol received with this manual is fitted witha special Double-Action Only (DAO) trigger mechansimdesignated the “Law Enforcement Modification”, or LEMfor short. Pages 7-13 of this manual cover the productspecific elements of the Law Enforcement Modification ofthe USP. The remaining pages of this manual concerninformation common to all USP Compact pistol models. Please carefully review this preface and the main body ofthis operators manual before handling the firearm.

DescriptionThe Law Enforcement Modification (LEM) is a seriesof unique trigger mechanism parts created specificallyto improve the quality and reduce the weight of the Double-Action Only trigger pull in the USP Pistol. Withthese parts installed the USP pistol can be fired likethe standard DAO USP pistol where every round isfired by simply pulling the trigger fully rearward withthe hammer starting at the forward rest position. Thereare no external decocking or safety levers present orrequired.

Due to the design of the proprietary HK LEM system

OPERATORS MANUAL PREFACE FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT MODIFICATION (LEM)

the weight of the DAO trigger pull has been reduced to7.5-8.5 pounds when new and is easier to use due tothe smoothness of the trigger pull.

NOTE: Optional 4.5-5.5 pound LEM trigger pull isalso available for the USP.

Parts Unique to the Law Enforcement ModificationThe unique parts of the USP Compact-LEM pistol arelisted below. Part numbers, including those that arecaliber specific can be found on the parts lists onpages 12, 55, and 57.

8

OperationUSP Pistols fitted with Law Enforcement Modificationparts operate like standard variants of the USP Pistol. However, the way in which the hammer is cocked isunique. The hammer in the LEM is a two-piecehammer comprised of a cocking piece (not visible withthe pistol assembled) and an external (visible)hammer.

The hammer on a conventional Double-Action (DA) orDAO pistol is normally drawn to the rear, fully cockedand automatically released by the relatively longrearward pull of the trigger by the operator. To insurereliable primer ignition even under adverse conditionsthe hammer spring that drives the hammer forward isrelatively strong.

In a conventional DA or DAO pistol the operator isforced to compress the hammer spring by squeezingthrough the entire DA trigger pull while at the sametime trying to hold the sights in alignment for accurateaiming. This can be difficult especially if the operatorshand strength is marginal.

To address this dilemma, HK devised the unique Law

Enforcement Modification. In the LEM system thequality of the trigger pull is improved while at the sametime a stronger hammer spring can be employed toimprove reliability by increasing the firing pin indent onthe primer. The stronger hammer spring also helps toreduce the slide velocity when firing “hot” ammunition.

The HK LEM uses the rearward movement of the slideduring loading or firing to fully compress the hammerspring instead of relying on the rearward pull of thetrigger as in conventional DA or DAO systems.

The cocking piece and hammer are rotated rearwardon the hammer axle when the slide moves fully rear-ward. When fully to the rear the cocking piece is heldin the cocked position by the sear and the hammerspring has been fully compressed by the hammerstrut. As the slide travels forward the hammer isrotated back to and held in the forward position by thehammer rebound spring.

When the trigger is pulled rearward against thecombined force (@ 7.5 – 8.5 pounds new) of thetrigger, hammer rebound, firing pin block, and sear

Page 9: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

9

springs the internal passive safeties are disengagedand the sear releases the cocking piece. The cockingpiece is then free to rotate the hammer forward on itsaxle under pressure of the compressed hammerspring imparted through the hammer strut to strike thefiring pin and fire the chambered round. The weight ofthe trigger pull is adjusted by an armorer replacing orexchanging the firing pin block, firing pin spring, andtrigger springs.

Special LEM ConsiderationsHK Lock-Out Device - With the exception of somespecial order production runs, all new USP pistolsassembled at the factory after October 1999 are fittedwith HK’s Lock-Out Device, an internal safety locklocated within the lanyard loop insert found in the heelof frame and described in detail on page 48.

On USP pistols that have LEM parts installed, the HKLock-Out Device cannot be engaged (locked) if theLEM cocking piece is cocked and the hammer springis compressed.

To engage the HK Lock-Out Device on pistols fitted

with LEM parts the pressure stored in the hammerspring must first be released. You must CLEAR thepistol, ensure that it is unloaded and safe and dry firethe pistol once to release the cocking piece and thetension on the hammer spring before you can engagethe HK Lock-Out Device.

Long Term Pistol StorageAnytime the slide is moved fully rearward on the USPPistol fitted with LEM parts the hammer spring iscompressed and held in that position until the cockingpiece is released by pulling the trigger on the pistol. Therefore for long-term storage (more than 1 year) it issuggested that the pistol first be CLEARED and madesafe then pointed in a safe direction and dry fired torelease pressure on the hammer spring to maintain itslife span.

FiringAll rounds are fired in the LEM DAO mode of fire asthey are in conventional DA or DAO handguns. Whenpulling the trigger rearward you will first feel arelatively long length of free travel (slack) and then asecond stage of heavier but consistent pull that

Page 10: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

10

actually releases the hammer and fires the pistol.

In addition to providing an improved DAO trigger pull, theLEM also provides a very short trigger reset distance toenhance the speed of multiple or follow-up shots.

WARNING: Do not place your finger on the triggeror within the trigger guard until you have made aconscious decision to fire the pistol.

SECTION 1 INTRODUCTION

The HK USP Compact – LEM Pistol is a small framepistol chambered for a wide cariety of cartridges.Based on the full size HK USP (Universal Self-loadingPistol), these handy pistols are a reasonable synthesisof compact size and effective shooting capabilities.Unlike some subcompact semi-automatic pistols thatuse a difficult to shoot “two-finger grip” frame, theHeckler & Koch USP Compact uses a narrow, full handgrip frame. This makes the pistol easy to shoot withoutsacrificing concealability.

All variants of the USP Compact have a modifiedcontoured slide and frame for effective concealability.DAO variants have a no snag, bobbed hammer with arubber insert for improved dropped safety.

The USP control lever has a positive stop and returnsto the “fire” position after decocking. The control lever, featured on many variants of the USP and USPCompact allows these pistols to be safely carried“cocked and locked”.

Derived from the full size HK USP introduced in 1993,

the USP Compact is designed with the demandingneeds of the American shooter in mind.

Features favored by US civilian, law enforcement, andmilitary users provided the design criteria for the fullsize USP and the USP Compact. Controls are uniquelyAmerican, influenced by such famous and successfuldesigns as the Government Model 1911 pistol.

Using a modified Browning-type action, the USPCompact is built to take the punishment of high energyloads. But unlike large frame USPs, the Compact doesnot use the patented USP recoil reduction system. Toreduce the size of the slide on the USP Compact, themechanical recoil reduction system found on largeframe USPs has been eliminated, replaced by aspecially designed flat recoil spring contained in thecaptive recoil spring assembly by an absorber bushingmade of a high strength polymer.

The polymer frame of the USP Compact was designedusing technical experience gained by HK engineers inthe development of the world’s first composite material

Page 15: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

15

pistols, the HK VP70Z and P9S. These same high-strength/corrosion free materials are used in the MK 23handgun made by HK for the U.S. Special OperationsCommand.

Major metal components like the one-piece, machinedsteel slide are also corrosion resistant, treated with aspecial “HE” (Hostile Environment) protective finish. The HE finish is an extremely hard, nitro-gas carbur-ized black oxide coating, and resists even the worsttypes of corrosion and wear, including exposure to saltwater.

The HK USP Compact pistol is presently available incalibers .45 ACP, .40 S&W, .357 SIG, and 9mm x19.Large frame USP models are also available in thesame calibers with the exception of .357 SIG. Thedesign characteristics of all HK USPs provide a widerange of flexibility for users.

All USPs can also be converted from one type oftrigger/firing mode to another. This includes combinationdouble-action and single-action (DA/SA) modes and dou-ble action only (DA-Only) modes. By using a modularapproach to the internal components, the control lever

function of all USPs can be switched from the left to theright side of the pistol for left-handed shooters.

Both large frame and Compact USPs are available inthe following trigger/firing mode configurations (seeFigure 1).

NOTE: Trigger/firing mode conversion can only bemade by an HK certified armorer.

DA/SA with “safe” position and control lever (manualsafety/decocking lever) on left side of frame DA/SA with “safe” position and control lever (manualsafety/decocking lever) on right side of frame

Variants and allow the user to carry the pistol in asingle-action mode (cocked and locked) with thecontrol lever/manual safety engaged. This same pistol, without modification, can be carried in double-actionmode, with or without the control lever/manual safetyengaged. DA/SA without “safe” position with control lever(decocking lever) on the left side of frame DA/SA without “safe” position with control lever(decocking lever) on the right side of frame

Page 16: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

16

Variants and provides the user with a frame-mounted decocking lever that does not have the “safe”position. This combination only allows the hammer tobe lowered from SA position to DA position. It does notprovide the “safe” position to prevent the pistol fromfiring when the trigger is pulled.

DA-Only with “safe” position and control lever(manual safety) on the left side of frame DA-Only with “safe” position and control lever(manual safety) on the right side of frame DA-Only without control lever (no safety/decocking lever)

For the DA-Only user, variants , , and of the USPoperate as double action only pistols with the hammeralways returning to the DA position (forward) after eachshot is fired. To fire each shot, the trigger must bepulled through the smooth DA trigger pull. Variants and have a manual safety lever (control lever). No control lever is provided on variant .

NOTE: The USP Compact – LEM is a modification ofthe standard DAO variant 7. A description of theLaw Enforcement Modification is begins on page 7.

❾ DA/SA with “safe” position and control lever (manualsafety) on the left side of frame ➓ DA/SA with “safe” position and control lever (manualsafety) on the right side of frame

Variants and ➓ allow the user to carry the pistol in asingle-action mode (cocked and locked) with the manu-al safety engaged. Unlike variants and , thecontrol lever cannot be used to decock the hammer. These variants are the ideal choice for users who pre-fer shooting the pistol in the SA mode with the thumbplaced on top of the control lever/manual safety.Variants and ➓ also use a spurred hammer, unlikeother USP Compact variants.

This same pistol, without modification, can be carriedin double-action mode, with or without the controllever/manual safety engaged, and provides secondprimer strike ability to single-action shooters.

Due to this innovative design approach, it is possible toconvert a USP Pistol into any one of the listed variants.Changing the trigger/firing mode of the pistol is ac-complished by installing a different set of components. This unique design allows the HK Universal Self-

finger of the firing hand, in most cases withoutadjusting the firing grip.

Low profile 3-dot sights, adjustable for windage andelevation, are standard on the USP Pistol. Optionaltritium sights are also available.

The USP Compact Pistol uses metal magazines tokeep grip size to a minimum. These magazines have aseries of viewing holes on the back side for countingthe cartridges remaining inside.

Two different interchangeable floor plates are availablefor the magazines of the USP Compact Pistol. A stan-dard flat floor plate and an extended magazine floorplate with a finger extension provide a choice of gripoptions with each pistol. Magazine floor plates can beeasily removed and changed without tools during dis-assembly.

The extended slide release is positioned to allow easyactuation without adjustment of the grip of the shootinghand. Another useful feature is the absence of a magazine lock-out device.

loading Pistol to be configured for a variety of purposesdepending on the requirements of the user, withouthaving to purchase a new pistol.

NOTE: Currently, only the DAO Variant 7 LawEnforcement Modification with 7.5-8.5 pound triggerpull is produced at this time.

Figure 1 Fire Modes and Control Functions by Variant

In addition to a wide selection of trigger/firing modes, all USP Pistols have an ambidextrous magazinerelease lever which is shielded from inadvertentactuation by the flared trigger guard. The magazinerelease lever can be pressed with the thumb or index

CAUTION: USP models, except special models witha magazine disconnect feature installed, will fire ifthe magazine is removed, a cartridge is in thechamber, and the trigger is pressed (with thecontrol lever in the FIRE position if applicable).

To reduce barrel wear, most USP Pistols havepolygonal cold hammer-forged barrels. This feature notonly ensures longer barrel life and easier borecleaning, but produces a better gas seal behind thebullet for increased muzzle velocity.

The HK USP Pistol is an extremely safe firearm, withno less than four safety features, some passive andsome active in nature. Simple to field strip and main-tain, the USP Pistol is a reliable and trouble-free pistol.

An abbreviated set of universal mounting grooves forinstalling accessories is molded in the polymer frameof the USP Compact. These grooves allow a variety ofaccessories and targeting devices, such as the Mark IIHK Universal Tactical Light and laser aimers to bemounted on the HK USP Compact without modificationto the pistol.

NOTE: Beginning in 1999, all UPS pistols, with theexception of some special order production runsare fitted with HK’s patented internal Lock-OutDevice. The use of this internal safety lock isdescribed beginning on page 50.

NOTE: Improperly designed or installedaccessories may result in damage to the USPmounting grooves and/or the USP Compact pistol.Such damage is not covered under the limitedlifetime warranty. Be certain to use only HK Autho-rized Accessories and follow installation and pre-cautions carefully.

At Heckler & Koch, form follows function. All HK pistolsare designed and manufactured to meet the operation-al requirements of demanding users. In a world of com-promise, some don’t.

4. Inspect chamber - inspect chamber for thepresence of a cartridge or empty case by:

• Visually viewing chamber through open ejectionport and;

• Physically inserting finger into chamber throughejection port to check for the presence of acartridge or empty case.

Remove any cartridges or empty cases from the cham-ber or from within the pistol.

The HK USP Pistol with LEM parts is now considered“Clear”.

General - (Refer to Figure 2 and 3 for the location ofthe features described below)

Heckler & Koch USP and USP Compacts are shortrecoil operated. They use a modified Browning stylesystem, without a link, to lock and unlock the barrel.

Upon firing, the pressure developed by the propellantgases forces the slide and barrel assembly to the rear. After moving approximately 3mm, the locking block will

Page 22: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

22

stop the rearward movement of the barrel. The barrel ispulled downward due to the engagement of the angledlocking surfaces of the locking block with those locatedon the end of the recoil spring guide rod. The lockingblock disengages from the slide and the slide continuesrearward independently from the barrel. The extractor, located on the right side of the slide extracts the spentcase. The ejector, positioned in the left side of theframe, rearward of the magazine well then ejects thefired cartridge case. The rearward moving slide thencocks the hammer, and compresses the recoil spring.

Once fully to the rear, the compressed recoil springpushes the slide forward, stripping the next cartridgefrom the magazine into the chamber. If the magazine isempty, the magazine follower lifts the slide release intoposition where it can stop the forward progress of theslide and holds the slide open. If a cartridge is presentin the magazine, the slide will push the cartridge fromthe magazine and into the chamber.

WARNING: Do not rely on the slide position to de-termine if the magazine is empty. Always checkvisually and physically ensure the pistol is notloaded.

During the last 3mm of forward movement, the slideforces the angled surfaces of the barrel locking blockagainst opposing angled surfaces on the recoil springguide rod. This action pivots the locking block on thebarrel up into engagement with the ejection port on theslide. The breech is now locked closed and the nextshot can be fired.

CAUTION: A pair of Universal Mounting Grooveslocated on the front of the USP’s frame allows for avariety of accessories to be used with the pistol.Improperly designed or installed accessories mayresult in damage to the mounting grooves and/orthe pistol. Such damage is not covered underwarranty. Be certain to use only HK authorizedaccessories and follow installation and precautionscarefully.

OPERATING CONTROLS & COMPONENTS

WARNING: The HK USP Pistol fitted with LEM partsincorporates double-action mode of operation.Anytime the trigger is pulled with a cartridge in thechamber, the pistol will fire from the hammer downposition.

In the double-action only mode, the hammer always returns to the uncocked (forward) position after eachshot. All shots are fired in the double-action mode.

Magazine - USP Compact magazines are constructedof metal with polymer floor plates, followers, and lock-ing plate pieces. Cartridges are positioned within the magazine in a staggered arrangement but are fed intothe pistol from a single row under the feed lips. The cartridges are visible through the numbered viewingholes located in the back of the magazine. For maintenance and cleaning, USP Compact magazinescan be easily disassembled.

Extractor - The extractor of the HK USP Compactpistol acts as a loaded chamber indicator. When a cartridge is in the chamber, the red colored forward edge of the extractor protrudes approximately 1 mm

from the slide and is visible to the operator.

Slide Release - This lever is located on the left side ofthe frame directly above the trigger. This lever is used tolock the slide open, to release the slide, and to disassemble the pistol.

As a slide stop, it is lifted upward by the magazinefollower or the operators finger as the slide travelsrearward during recoil or manual manipulation. Theslide release engages in the recess located on the leftside of the slide at it’s midpoint. The slide release isspring actuated and is held down out of engagementwith the slide until required. The slide release will automatically hold the slide open when the last shot isfired. As a disassembly lever, the slide release isremoved from the left side of the frame when the slideis held partially rearward.

Magazine Release Lever - This ambidextrous, springactuated lever holds the magazine in place within thegrip by engaging in the notch found on the front of themagazine housing.

Page 24: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

24

Depressing this lever downward with the firing indexfinger or thumb will allow the magazine, regardless ofthe number of cartridges inside, to drop free of theframe. The magazine release lever is shielded fromaccidental actuation by the design of the polymer frameand flared trigger guard surrounding it.

Frame - All sides of the polymer frame are textured toensure a firm grip, even with wet hands or under condi-tions of rapid fire.

The trigger guard is slightly recurved and grooved toprovide a firm grip when using two hands or gloves tofire the pistol. The frame is a one-piece molded component with metal inserts (locking insert and guiding part) cast into the frame during production.

The slide rides on these metal inserts during operation. The frame contains mounting grooves for accessoryattachment and finger recesses located to the left andright of the magazine well for manual extraction of themagazine, if necessary. The serial number of the pistolis engraved in the metal insert incorporated into thefront of the frame in front of the trigger guard, on the leftside of the slide, and on the barrel locking block.

Sights - The USP Pistol uses theproven 3-dot sighting arrangement. Byaligning all three dots horizontally onthe target, with the front sight dot cen-tered between the rear sight dots, theoperator can quickly and easily engagethe target with a high degree of accura-cy (Figure 7). With the optional tritiumsights with white outline installed, pre-cise and rapid target engagements arepossible under low light conditions aswell.

The rear sight can be adjusted for windage by driftingthe sight to the left or to the right, depending on thedesired shot placement. Bullet impact on target willmove in the same direction that the rear sight ismoved. Be careful not to damage the slide finish whenadjusting the rear sight.

Adjustments for elevation are accomplished by exchanging the front sight with a higher or lower sight. The height of the front sight is indicated on theunderside. The front sight must be removed by using adrift punch or an HK USP sight pusher. The accessory

Figure 7

Page 25: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

25

HK sight pusher can be used to install, remove, andadjust the front and rear sights on all USP and USPCompact pistols.

To raise the bullet impact on target, a shorter frontsight is installed. To lower the bullet impact on target, ataller front sight is installed. Installing the next higher

or lower front sight will change the point-of-impact 2inches at 25 meters, depending on the ammunitionused. USP Compacts are function fired and zeroed atthe factory at 25 meters, point-of-aim, point-of-impact.Your actual zero may vary depending on theammunition used and/or your style of shooting.

SECTION 4 AMMUNITION

WARNING: Heckler & Koch specifically disclaims anyresponsibilities for any damage or injury that shouldoccur because of, or as a result of, the use of faulty, remanufactured, or reloaded (hand loaded)ammunition, or of cartridges other than those for whichthe pistol was originally chambered for.

The HK USP Pistol is designed to fire quality, factoryloaded ammunition loaded to SAAMI specifications foruse specifically in handguns. For use with ammunitionwith hard primers (i.e. some NATO spec. cartridges), aspecial hammer spring is available.

The following guidelines should be considered whenselecting the correct ammunition for your pistol.

1. Be sure the ammunition you have chosen is compatible with your pistol – proper caliber, cartridge, bullet weight, etc. Caliber markings on the USP Pistolappear on the left side of the slide and on the barrellocking block, visible through the ejection port on theright side of the slide.

2. Prior to loading the magazine and chamber, carefullyinspect all cartridges for the following abnormalities:

• Cracked, split, dirty or corroded cases• Improperly seated projectiles and/or primers• Damaged projectiles

3. Do not attempt to fire a cartridge in which the projec-tile has been forced back into the case. Upon firing, thiscondition may result in increased chamber pressureabove safe limits.

4. Do not fire ammunition through the pistol that:• Is foreign and/or outdated military surplus • Is assembled with corrosive primer and/or

propellant• Is exposed to oil, grease, water, or direct sunlight.

Remove contaminants if possible before use andcool down ammunition exposed to direct sunlightor heat. (Exposure to sources of heat could raisethe chamber pressure of the cartridge above safelimits.)

• Is loaded specifically for use in submachine guns.

Page 27: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

27

CAUTION: HK firearms are designed to functionwith quality manufactured brass casedammunition. Use of steel or aluminum casedcartridges is not recommended and couldadversely affect safe and reliable functioning. Forfurther information on ammunition selection, contact HK Customer Service at 703-450-1900

NOTE: In compliance with NIJ Standard—0112.00,currently there are no known ammunition typesthat meet the general guidelines set forth in thissection that are not compatible with the USPpistols. All USP pistols are approved for use with+P and +P+ ammunition as it applies to the specificcaliber. The use of +P and +P+ ammunitionaccelerates wear and reduces the service life onthe component parts of any pistol, including theHK USP and USP Compact pistols.

NOTE: There is currently no existing SAAMI speci-fication +P or +P+ ammunition in caliber .40 S&W.

WARNING: The use of incorrect ammunition in thepistol could result in damage to the pistol and /or in-jury to the operator or bystanders. Be careful not toinadvertently mix 9mm and .40 caliber ammunition.9mm ammunition will slide past the chamber and intothe barrel in a .40 caliber pistol causing a barrelobstruction resulting in damage to the pistol and/orpersonal injury.

• Physically inserting finger into chamber throughejection port to check for the presence of acartridge or empty case.

Remove any cartridges or empty cases from the cham-ber or from within the pistol.

The HK USP Pistol with LEM parts is now considered“Clear”.

Filling and Emptying the Magazine -

NOTE: Do not attempt to load more than theprescribed number of cartridges into the magazine.Do not alter the shape of the magazine housing, follower, or spring. To do so may cause stoppagesor the magazine may not seat properly in the pistol.

SECTION 5 INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Clearing the Pistol The HK USP pistol is not consid-ered “clear” or safe unless:

1. The magazine is removed from the pistol and;2. The slide is locked to the rear and;3. The chamber is free of brass or ammunition

To Clear the HK USP Pistol with LEM parts:1. Make sure fingers are outside of the trigger

guard and the pistol is pointed in a safedirection at all times!

2. Remove magazine - depress the magazine releaselever and remove the magazine from the pistol.

3. Open and lock slide - while pointing the pistolin a safe direction lock the slide open by pullingthe slide rearward as you press the slide releaseupward. Watch for a cartridge or empty case to beejected from the pistol.

29

Filling the Magazine - (See Figure 8 below)

Figure 8

1. Hold the magazine in the non-firing hand with theback side of the magazine resting against thepalm.

2. Using the firing hand, hold a cartridge betweenthe index finger and thumb with the projectile facing the palm.

3. Press the rim of the cartridge down against theforward edge of the magazine follower or on thetop cartridge already in the magazine.

4. Slide the cartridge back into the magazine underthe feed lips.

5. Repeat steps 1-4 until the magazine is full. Theviewing holes in the back of the magazine allowthe operator to confirm the number of cartridgespresent within the magazine.

NOTE: An optional magazine loading tool isavailable from HK under part number 217830.

Emptying the Magazine - Exert pressure with a fingeron the base of the cartridge and push each cartridgeforward out of the magazine one at a time until themagazine is empty.

Loading the Pistol -

WARNING: Forcefully inserting a loaded magazineinto the USP Pistol may cause the pistols slide toclose, chambering a cartridge and making the USPready to fire. When inserting a magazine, always becertain the control lever (if applicable), is in the“SAFE” position and that the pistol is pointed in asafe direction with your fingers off the trigger andoutside the trigger guard. Failure to do so couldcause you to unintentionally fire the pistol, result-ing in serious injury or death.

Page 30: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

30

WARNING: On Variants 1, 2, 3 and 4 the recom-mended method of lowering the hammer is asfollows:• be sure the firearm is pointing in a safe di-rection.• be sure that your finger is off of the trigger andoutside of the trigger guard.• push down on the control lever (decocking lever)moving it into the decock position, this allows thehammer to fall safely into the half-cock position. After decocking, release the control lever and itwill return to the fire position.

Any attempt to lower the hammer manually (with around in the chamber), will allow the hammer to belowered past the half-cock notch and bypasses thepassive safeties which are built into the USP andcould result in an accidental discharge andsubsequent property damage, injury or loss of life.

On DA/SA models without the decocking functionin the control lever (Variants 9 and 10), it is unsafeto lower the hammer while there is a round in thechamber.

Administrative Loading - used to initially load thepistol before it is to be fired.

Slide rearward or forward, chamber empty

1. Make sure fingers are outside of the triggerguard and the pistol is pointed in a safedirection at all times!

2. Insert magazine - insert the magazine firmly intothe frame. Tug on the magazine to insure that it isfully seated and engaged.

3. Chamber a cartridge - chamber a cartridge bydepressing the slide release or by pulling the slidefully to the rear and releasing it. Do not ride theslide forward!

4. Top off - remove the magazine and top it off byinserting one additional cartridge.

5. Replace Magazine - after topping off the maga-zine, replace it in the pistol and ensure that it isproperly seated and engaged.

Page 31: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

31

On Variant 9 and 10 pistols, to lower the hammeron an empty chamber, the following steps must befollowed with extreme care. remember: loweringthe hammer manually on the USP pistol requirespulling the trigger. The action of pulling the triggerbypasses the passive safeties which are built intothe USP. If there is a round in the chamber whenthe hammer is being lowered manually, and if thehammer slips, the gun could discharge causingpossible subsequent property damage, injury orloss of life.

1. Point the pistol in a safe direction and put themanual safety in the “on” or “safe” position bymoving the control lever fully upward.

2. Remove the magazine.

3. While keeping your finger off of the trigger andoutside of the trigger guard draw the slide to therear and push the slide stop up to lock the slide inthe open position. Inspect the chamber visuallyand manually to ensure that there is no round inthe chamber.

4. Release the slide by pressing down on theslide stop.

5. Disengage the manual safety by moving thecontrol lever downward to the “fire” position.

6. Hold the pistol firmly in one hand as if youwere going to discharge the firearm. Using thethumb of the hand which is not holding thepistol, draw the hammer slightly to the rear.Using the index finger of the hand which isholding the pistol, pull the trigger to the rear.

Lower the hammer SLOWLY, while at the sametime releasing the trigger, removing your fingerfrom the trigger and placing it outside of thetrigger guard. Continue to lower the hammerSLOWLY until it has come to a complete restagainst the back of the slide.

Draw the hammer back slightly until it comes torest at the half cock notch position.

4. Inspect chamber - inspect chamber for thepresence of a cartridge or empty case by:• Visually viewing chamber through open ejection

port and;

Firing the Pistol -

WARNING1. Be sure of your target and what’s behind it! A

bullet from a pistol travels as far as a mile. It caneasily penetrate wood or plasterboard walls oreven a car door.2. Be sure that your hands and all parts of yourbody are kept away from the muzzle of your pistolat all times!3. Always wear eye and ear protection when firing the pistol.

Double-action only mode - (Hammer uncocked)

• Physically inserting finger into chamber throughejection port to check for the presence of acartridge or empty case.

Remove any cartridges or empty cases from the cham-ber or from within the pistol.

The HK USP Pistol with LEM parts is now considered“Clear”.

If the pistol fails to fire, clear and disassemble it andcheck for:

1. Obstructions in the chamber, bore or frame.Remove obstructions.

2. Bad ammunition.Try new ammunition.3. Unserviceable magazine. Replace magazine.4. Fouling or lack of lubrication. Clean and lubricate

the pistol in accordance with the instructions con-tained within this manual.

5. Evidence of severely worn or broken parts.Contact your authorized HK dealer or unit armorer.

If your pistol still fails to operate correctly, contact yourunit armorer, authorized HK dealer, or Heckler & Koch’sCustomer Service Department for guidance.

WARNING: If a cartridge is assembled withoutpowder (a fault of the manufacturing process), theprimer alone has enough power to propel thebullet into the bore. A bullet lodged in the boremay cause damage to the barrel and/or pistol ifanother cartridge is fired and could causepersonal injury or even death. This event iscommonly called a “squib load” or “pop and nokick” and is characterized by a reduced report andlittle or no movement of the slide. An alertoperator could notice the occurrence of this eventin time to avoid firing the next cartridge.

Selection and Use of a Holster

Selection. When selecting a carrying holster for theHK USP Compact or USP Pistols, it is important toconsider the following points:

1. The holster must not make contact with or actuateany of the operating controls. This includes thehammer, slide release, magazine release lever, and most importantly the trigger. The design of

Page 34: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

34

the holster must also not actuate these controlswhen the pistol is carried in, drawn from, orreturned to the holster.

2. The holster should not cause the slide to move(unlock) when the pistol is returned to the holster.

3. Accommodations must be provided in the holsterfor any accessories that might be present on thepistol.

4. Choose a holster designed specifically for the HKUSP Compact or USP pistols.

Returning the pistol to the holster. The USP Pistolsmust be made “safe” (or cleared) prior to returning it tothe holster. The pistol is considered safe to return it tothe holster when:

1. All fingers are off of the trigger and out of the trig-ger guard and;

2. The pistol is “clear” or;3. The hammer is in the decocked (down) position.

WARNING: The pistol must never be returned tothe holster unless the above procedures havebeen followed or injury or death could occur.

Storage and Transport -

1. Store or transport the pistol and its componentsclean and lubricated.

2. Store and transport the pistol without cartridges inthe chamber, magazine, or in the storage contain-er.

3. Store and transport the pistol with the slideforward and the hammer down (uncocked).

Cleaning Intervals - Normal and Major are the twotypes of operator cleaning for the USP Pistol.

Normal Cleaning - Performed after each firing or everytwelve (12) months.

Major Cleaning - Often referred to as “detailed cleaning”. Performed after the firing of 500 cartridgesor when the pistol is exposed to, or laden throughoutwith sand, dust, water (especially salt water), or othervisible contaminants or foreign matter.

Normal Cleaning

CAUTION: Do not use a stainless steel bore brushwhich can scratch the polygonal bore and reduceaccuracy.

Slide -• Gently scrub all internal surfaces of the slide using

the nylon toothbrush moistened with solvent.• Remove all loose fouling from all surfaces of the slide

using a rag and cotton swabs.

SECTION 7 CLEANING & MAINTENANCE

NOTE:The service life and performance of your HKUSP Pistol is dependent upon the correct handlingand proper care by the operator.

Materials Required - At a minimum, we suggest the following materials to properly clean the USP Pistol

• Using a rag and cotton swabs, remove all loosefouling from all surfaces of the magazine.

Major Cleaning - Major Cleaning is the same asnormal cleaning except that:• The magazine is disassembled for cleaning.• All parts should be rinsed with, or immersed in,

solvent and thoroughly scrubbed with a nylon brush. The parts can then be dried using compressed air orwith a rag and cotton swabs.

NOTE: All parts of the USP Pistol can be immersedin any cleaning solvent that it is safe to put yourhands into, including ultrasonic cleaning solution.Use of ultrasonic cleaning machines can result inthe unwanted removal of colored referencemarkings of the frame, extractor, and control lever(where applicable).

Inspection - During and after cleaning visually inspect the pistol andit’s components for any irregularities that may causeproblems or stoppages during operation. Generally, youshould keep a watchful eye out for the discrepancieslisted below.

Recoil spring assembly -• Remove all visible fouling using solvent, a nylon

toothbrush, a rag and cotton swabs.Barrel (with locking block) -• Moisten a bronze bore brush with solvent and scrub

the bore from chamber to muzzle at least six (6)passes, back and forth.

• Remove the loose fouling from the bore using clean-ing patches.

• Gently scrub the exterior of the barrel and locking blockwith the nylon toothbrush moistened with solvent.

• Remove all loose fouling from the exterior of the barrel using a rag and cotton swabs.

Frame -• Gently scrub all internal surfaces where carbon foul-

ing is present using the nylon toothbrush moistenedwith solvent. Concentrate on the area normally covered by the slide.

• Using a rag and cotton swabs, remove all loosefouling from all areas of the frame.

Magazine - • Gently scrub the top of the magazine, concentrating

on the follower and feed lips, using the nylontoothbrush moistened with solvent.

Always clear the pistol before conducting your in-spection!

• Damaged or missing parts• Improper assembly or function• Absence of free movement, where applicable• Absence of spring tension, where applicable• Unaccustomed looseness• Parts exhibiting signs of cracks, burrs, dents, or

obvious signs of damage or stress• Presence of stops or tactile clicks, where applicable.• General overall cleanliness• Presence of sufficient lubrication• Presence of corrosion or degradation of surface finish

CAUTION: This pistol has been developed bycapable and experienced engineers. Its presentdesign represents an optimization of a combinationof safety, speed of deployment, accuracy, depend-ability, and durability. Do not attempt to make thispistol “better” by altering any of its components.Altering any part of the pistol or magazine maycause injury or death and will also void any Heck-ler & Koch warranty on the product.

LubricationMetal surfaces of the USP Pistol are treated with HK’sspecial corrosion & wear resistant Hostile Environment (HE) finish. This surface treatment doesnot completely reduce the friction between moving partsand it is recommended that a lubricant be applied to thepistol to ensure proper functioning. Any type of high-quality, medium weight lubricant (oil) specificallydesigned for use on firearms will work well on the HKUSP Pistol. Do not use lubricants that boast of theirability to penetrate metal as these substances maydeaden primers.

Where and How Much -

No Lube - Surface is dry and not slippery to the touch

• All plastic components

Light Lube - A finger run across the surface yieldslittle or no lube

• Bore, chamber, and exterior of barrel• All metal parts• All internal parts in slide and frame

Troubleshooting Problems and Repair The ten inspection areas listed above should bechecked prior to contacting HK if your pistol fails tofunction properly. Other common causes of problemsthat are often overlooked include:

• Fouled or improperly lubricated pistol • Bad ammunition • Damaged magazines• Operator error

If your USP Pistol still fails to function, please contactHK Customer Service at (703) 450-1900 for the nameand address of your nearest HK Authorized Repair Fa-cility. Military and law enforcement users, contact yourunit armorer or HK Customer Service.

NOTE: If after reviewing this manual you still havequestions, please contact HK Customer Service atHeckler & Koch USA. Address any corrections orsuggestions for improving this manual to the HKCreative Services Department.

• Magazine spring• Recoil spring assembly• Sights• USP metal magazine housing, where applicable

Medium Lube - A finger run across the surface yieldssome lube but lube does not run down surface when itis held in a vertical position.

• Barrel locking block• Slide rails and grooves• All operating controls• Locking insert and guiding part in frame• Extractor

Heavy Lube - Lubrication runs down the surfacewhen it is held in a vertical position

No heavy lube is required on the HK USP PistolReapply lubricant periodically during firing as it burnsoff from the heat. Apply lubricant using a clean shavingbrush, cotton swabs, patches, or rag. A spray bottle oflubricant also works well when using compressed air tocirculate the lubricant into all parts and to remove theexcess from the pistol.

Figure 22Turn the key clockwise to lock the action

Use the two pronged key supplied with the pistol tolock or unlock the pistol as desired. When the holeson the Lock-Out Device are horizontally positioned the pistol is locked and can not be fired (see figure 23).

Figure 23Locked position

LOCK-OUT DEVICE

All USP Pistols produced and delivered in the U.S.after October 1999 are equipped with a patented HKLock-Out™ Device. This component replaces thelanyard loop insert in the frame and when engagedlocks the handgun’s action by blocking any movementof the trigger, the hammer, and the slide. The handgunis locked and can not fire until unlocked. The Lock-Outcontrol plate is accessible through the pistol’smagazine well (see figure 22).

WARNING: Always point the pistol in a safedirection when locking or unlocking the Lock-OutDevice. The pistol should be unloaded and “clear’before locking the Lock-Out Device

CAUTION: In USP pistols fitted with the LawEnforcement Modification (LEM), the pistol mustfirst be unloaded, “cleared”, and dry fired torelease the compressed hammer spring before theLock-Out Device can be locked.

Page 51: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

51

When the holes on the Lock-Out Device are verticallypositioned the pistol is unlocked and can be fired (seefigure 24).

Figure 24Unlocked/fire position

WARNING: The HK Lock-Out Device is not asubstitute for safe gun handling practices. Neverpoint the muzzle of the pistol in an unsafedirection (at yourself or others). When the Lock-Out Device is placed in the locked position theslide is locked in the closed position and can notbe moved! Forcing the slide rearward while thegun is in this locked position will damage the USPCompact.

NOTE: UTL models manufactured prior to the MKIIwill only fit the large frame USP, not the USP Com-pact.

The HK UTL can be quickly attached or removed fromthe pistol and provides an immediate source ofillumination. With easy to use controls, the HK UTLensures law enforcement professionals or homeowners can identify potential threats in critical low lightsituations.

Using a USP fitted with a UTL makes alignment of thelight and pistol easier than using a separate flashlight.A separate light can be difficult to use and hold whilemanipulating a pistol in a life threatening situation. TheUTL can also be detached from the pistol and used inplace of a conventional flashlight.

The UTL is designed and manufactured by InsightTechnology Inc. (ITI), the same firm that created thespecial flashlight and laser aiming module developedfor use on the .45 caliber HK Mark 23 pistol used bythe US Special Operations Command.

USP ACCESSORIES

Heckler & Koch and Insight Technology Inc. have developed a powerful accessory light that attaches tothe HK USP large frame and USP Compact pistol.

Smaller and more powerful than a conventionalflashlight, the HK Universal Tactical Light (UTL) adds adimension of tactical flexibility to the USP absent inother modern semiautomatic pistols. The UTL MK II fitsboth the large frame USP and the USP Compact.

Figure 25The UTL MK II is a compact and powerful

accessory light for the USP and USP Compact.

Page 53: H&K USP Compact-LEM Semi-automatic Pistol Manual

53

Available exclusively from Heckler & Koch, Inc., theUTL MK II fits all variants of the USP pistol and can bepurchased with an optional remote cable switch, andtactical carrying pouch.

Key features of the HK UTL MKII

• compact and rugged design fits both frame sizesof the USP

• lamp brightness superior to most flashlights • focusable beam, spot to flood• clip-on/clip-off design, can be installed or

removed in seconds• integral on-off switch prevents inadvertent

operation• uses easily replaceable standard lithium batteries• fingertip on-off operation (toggle switch pushed to

right, intermittent on only, toggle switch pushed toleft, intermittent and constant on)
