Over a period of several years there has been considerable time and effort

expended on the possibility, the dream, of an HKCC representative team

walking out at Lords to take on the MCC. The dream finally became a

reality this year, as the HKCC were delighted to accept an invitation from

the MCC for such a fixture to take place on Tuesday 26th July. Moreover,

this fixture was scheduled for the day after the conclusion of the England

vs India Test Match at the same venue, and indeed, on the same pitch.

With such a banner headline fixture in place, the Club requested

traditional foes, Stragglers of Asia and Bickley Park, to accommodate

fixtures around this time. A return fixture with the Honourable Artillery

Company (recent visitors to HK) and a new fixture with Scaynes Hill

completed a hectic 5 games in 8 days programme.

An impossibly difficult process of selection for the Lords and other games

ensued, with the final tour party accumulating at Chek Lap Kok and

leaving Hong Kong early on the morning of Saturday 23rd July.

Fixtures against the Stragglers go back many yearsand within their teams are often former HK and

HKCC players who have since returned to the UK.

On this occasion, Rowan McGregor (former HKCCWitherers) had taken the reins for the Stragglers.

Historically, these games are based around time anddeclaration and, on winning the toss, Captain for the

Day, Darren Tucker, decided HKCC would bat first.

The Scorpions batsmen, Billy Henwood and TimSmart, opened the tour for the Club and cautiously

put together scores of 29 and 36 respectively.Courtney Kruger (44) and Mark Wright (54) then

consolidated the innings with a 105 run partnership,

which allowed the skipper to declare the innings at229-6 after 42 overs. Rowan McGregor had the

Stragglers best return with 2-28 from 5 overs of off-spin.

This left the Stragglers with a possible 46 overs tochase down the HKCC total. Former HK British

Forces Captain Tim Lerwill, gave their innings some

impetus with 35 and his son Oliver contributed afurther 36. However, the innings lost momentum

when 5 wickets went down for 30 runs and they

eventually closed out to draw the game at 123-8. MostHKCC bowlers managed to take a wicket, with Mark

Wrights 2-21 from 10 overs being the best return.

The squad eagerly boarded the coach to Lords at 0730. An 0830 practice session on theNursery Ground, run by Coach Mark Wright, allowed some of the pre-match nerves to

dissipate. At 1000 Captain Michael Jamieson called correctly at the toss and decided thatHKCC would field first in what was to be a 50 over per side fixture.

Max Tucker had the honour of taking the new ball and was to have an excellent day out, taking 3-60 in his 10 overs. The MCC top order of Simon Birtwisle (31), Gareth James(114) and Martin Miller (57) put together successive century stands as they made the

most of the Test wicket which was now into its 6th day of use. Jason Bird, who shared thenew ball, removed Birtwisle to be the first successful HKCC bowler at Lords and he

finished with 1-47 from his 7 overs. Michael Jamieson had both James and Miller as hisvictims, taking 2-50 in his 10 overs. MCC had moved along steadily at 6 runs per over

throughout their innings to close at 299-6.

Following the usual sumptuous Lords lunch of which our Patron Mike Gatting wasalways very fond, Tim Smart and Phil Pemberton walked out through the Long Roomand on to the hallowed turf to begin the HKCC reply. Sadly, they and Billy Henwood

were the victims in a scoreline of 41-3 after just 9 overs. Courtney Kruger and MarkWright then combined for a stand of 107 in 17 overs to offer renewed hope of a successful

chase. However, Krugers departure for 42 heralded a spell of 5 wickets falling for 25runs in 8 overs, to effectively end the game as a contest. Wright was eventually 9th outfor a run-a- ball 88 containing 12 x 4s and a 6, and HKCC were finally all out for 205 in

the 38th over. Scott Stenning dismissed Kruger and the tail to finish with 4-25 from 6overs.

Bickley Park CC have been visitors to and hosts of HKCC on several

occasions and it is a fixture always eagerly anticipated by both camps.

Mark Edwards was the Captain for this particular instalment and he

decided that HKCC should bat on winning the toss.

Billy Henwood was the mainstay of an HKCC total of 253-6 from 50 overs

with 70 not out from 116 balls. Tim Smart (61) and Mark Ferguson (49 not

out from 29 balls) shared 50+ partnerships with him. Iqbal took 3-46 fromhis 10 overs for Bickley Park and Matthew Johnson, former HKCC

Witherers and Scorpions, opened the bowling with 1-34 from 7 overs.

Iqbal was the go-to man when it was Bickley Parks turn to bat, opening

up with 101 from 123 balls. When he was 7th out at 206, the game was in

the balance, but 2 late partnerships of 25 and 30 took Bickley past the

winning post with 7 balls to spare. Phil Pemberton, bowling late in thegame, took 3-32 from 7 overs and Max Tucker again impressing with 1-44

    from 10 overs.

Scaynes Hill is a new fixture for HKCC in what turned out to be a fairly lowscoring game. Captain Trevor Tully maintained the tourists 100% record withthe coin and decided to take first use of what turned out to be a challenging

strip. The captain, Shane Sibraa and 2 x Tuckers had departed by the time thescore was 30. A belligerent 47 from Nick Armstrong(7 x 4s and 3 x 6s) raised

the spirits and 30 extras also assisted to raise the score to 176 all out from 28overs. Hutchings opened the Scaynes bowling with 3-8 and returned later to

finish with 4-18 from 6 overs.Runs were harder still to come by in the Scaynes innings with only 2 batsmenmaking double figures, the impressively named Campopiano top scoring with

    33. The wickets were shared around between bowlers and non- bowlers,Darren Tucker taking 2-20 from 6 overs and even Billy Henwood troubling

the lower middle order with 3-8 from 3 overs.

The HAC visited HKCC in December 2010 and this was the Clubs first opportunityto reciprocate the fixture. HAC had comfortably defeated Stragglers of Asia in HK,

so the HKCC were hoping to go one better on this occasion.

Captain Shane Sibraa reinforced the Clubs superiority in Chater Tavern sports bycompleting a Nap Hand of coin toss wins on tour and electing to bat first. It was a

pleasure to see the business partnership and co-tour sponsors Pemberton andStewart shuffle out to open the batting in the Clubs final tour fixture. Shandy was

to fall, unfortunately, all too quickly but it opened the way for significantpartnerships of 120 between Pembo (80) and Paul Watkins (115) and, after Pembosdismissal, a further 90 with the Captain (26). There was even time for Tour ManagerBob Bettridge to join the party with a quick- fire 20 (2 x 6s) from 11 balls. This wasWatkos only game on tour having been sidelined by illness. He received 100 ballsand hit 12 x 4s and 3 x 6s; sadly missed at the Lords game. HKCC closed on 261-4

    from their 40 overs.

There was a spirited reply from HAC, their first wicket falling at 53 in only the 8thover. However, the scoring rate slowed and at 97-5 in the 20th over, it was going tobe an unlikely chase. Darren Tucker again excelled with 2-15 from 5 overs and thetour was eventually concluded with HAC on 185-6, giving the HKCC a final tour

record of played 5, won 2, drawn 1 and lost 2.

The touring party of 16 players had been set the ambitious task of completing 5 games over a period of

an 8 day tour, which included, after many years of hard work by Sir Rodney, Tony Melloy, various

COC's and touring parties, the honour of walking on to the Hallowed Turf at the MCC.

The Tour included a day in the Box at Lords watching England vs India, a day at the Goodwood

Races, a Cocktail Reception at the Lansdowne Club for friends of the HKCC and matches against

Stragglers of Asia, Bickley Park CC, Scaynes Hill CC, Honourable Artillery Company CC and, of

course, the Marylebone Cricket Club. The end result for the tour was a 3 wins and 2 losses scoreline.

The game and dinner at Lords will be a lasting memory for all those who took part in the Tour

Tours cannot take place without significant support and I would like to pass on the thanks from all of

the tourists to Sir Rodney Miles for hosting the touring party in the Box at Lords and for his

unrelenting efforts to get the Club on the main ground;Pemberton Stewart for their support of the Tourand, specifically, a great day at the Goodwood Races;Bob Bettridge, as Tour Manager, worked tirelessly

to make the tour a great success;Mark Wright, Sally Greig, James Callow and Nigel Stearns for theirefforts; Mike Walsh for joining the Section as our Tour Umpire and, once again, Sally, for being our

Scorer; and finally Shane Sibraa for being official photographer and putting together this book that will

remain a reminder of what a memorable tour this was.

Many who have been a key part of the organisation of this Tour will have been missed here but I

would like to thank you all for making it a wonderful and unforgettable event.

Finally, I would like to thank all our hosts in the UK for the support they have shown to the HKCC in

making this Tour a great success. May the relationship between our Clubs and the friendships between

our Members continue for many many years.
