around the campus have been actively working with theselfless feeling; “NOT FOR ME BUT FOR THE NATION”pouring from their hearts. This year it was for the first timeNSS volunteers took up a different step and assisted thehandicapped poor people in getting proper treatment andthus giving them the perfect opportunity to start living theirlives again with fresh enthusiasm.

Although for the last one year there has been no reportof new polio cases in India, yet the last few decades alarge number of people have suffered from this disease. Most of them, unfortunately, are not aware of the medicalfacilities available in India. NSS volunteers, while visitingthe nearby villages of Roorkee, noticed the suffering andhelplessness of such handicapped, realized the immensepotential in them and took an initiative to spreadawareness about these facilities. The RT EDUSLUM cellof NSS IIT Roorkee conducted a medical survey inBhangedi and Khanjarpur villages to ascertain thenumber of physically challenged people and the type oftheir disability. The aim was to provide them with relevantmedical facilities required for overcoming their disability.

The survey at Bhangedi village revealed that nearly70 people were physically challenged. Out of them 9 weresuffering from Polio, five from deformed leg bones andankle bones, 8 persons from foot problems, and around18 people suffered from other limb problems, includinglimb damage, fracture, bent hand, polio in their arms andhand shrinkage. Also, among the population of physicallychallenged people in Bhangedi are those, who aresuffering from paralysis and acute back problems. Thepeople suffering from the aforementioned problems are inurgent need of wheelchairs, crutches, artificial limbs andother such contraptions. Moving over to Khanjarpurvillage, 44 physically challenged people were found. Fourof them were disabled by polio, 4 others were paralyzed, and quite a few had foot and limb related problemsincluding unbalanced legs and crippled legs.

As an initial venture, the cases of amputees and ofpeople suffering from polio were taken. Organizationsworking to provide medical facilities to these people werefound out. Finally, Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang SahayataSamiti (BMVSS) agreed upon providing the necessaryhelp. BMVSS works for the physical and socio-economicrehabilitation of the physically disabled, specially theresource-less, so that they may lead a life of dignity andbecome productive members of the community. The Headof the BMVSS, New Delhi, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar wasconsulted and requested to treat the patients of nearbyvillages of Roorkee. After receiving a positive responseand great words of appreciation from him, five patientswere taken on March 5, 2012 along with one attendantwith them to Delhi by the volunteers. NSS Program officerDr. Smita Jha and IIT Roorkee administration gave itsworthy support in organizing the trip comfortably. A brief

Prof. Mahendra Pal Singh, Preston Wade Professor,Virginia Tech., Blacksburg, U.S.A. delivered a lectureon "Civil Infrastructure Health Monitoring: Challengesand Research Trends", at the Department ofEarthquake Engineering, IIT Roorkee, Roorkee onDecember 19, 2011. The lecture was attended by alarge audience comprising of faculty members andstudents from Departments of Earthquake Engineeringand Civil Engineering, participants of a short-termcourse in Civil Engineering and scientists from theCentral Building Research Institute, Roorkee. Prof.Pradipta Banerji, Director, IIT Roorkee presided overthe lecture presentation.

The lecture focused on vibration based systemidentification for the purpose of structural healthmonitoring. New approaches for damage detection inlarge structural systems based on the application ofhigh pass filtering and adaptive Kalman filtering wasdiscussed followed by some illustrative examples. Theimportant issue of modeling environmental effects inthe prognosis of damage was highlighted and a methodbased on time series analysis to model seasonalvariations in natural frequencies of structural systemswas presented. The lecture was followed by a livelydiscussion.
