Level 2 Industrial Training
• A 3-credit course of your BEng degree programme (optional, starting from 2009)
• Also known as “Summer Internship” and “Industrial Placement”
• Conducted during summer months of June, July and August
• Usually in companies/organizations in Hong Kong, mainland China and overseas

Importance of Industrial Training
• A valuable experience (prepare you for job seeking, career planning and working)
• Industrial training record is useful when applying for the status of Professional Engineer (e.g. HKIE’s RPE)
• It could contribute to your final year project and design project (give your ideas & info.)
• It could create an employment opportunity (if you perform well)

• Before the training– Prepare your resume and job application letter– Develop skills in job application & interview
• During the training– Develop your working experience– Prepare your training records & reports

Gammon, MTRC, Swire

– Private sector (consultants, contractors)

available• For open recruitments, students may express interest
in applying by responding to the notice• For companies contacted by Dept., we will
arrange/match suitable candidate(s) to the jobs

• Students may obtain training places as Research Assistants and undertake training in ME Dept.– Supervised by ME academic staff
• There is no guarantee that our Dept can find a training place for every student– If possible, please take the initiative of seeking
other summer training posts by yourselves

• Your Résumé or Curriculum Vitae (CV)– It should be neat and tidy, organized, easy to
read, with clear headings and indentations
• Cover Letter– Be neat, well-spaced and in short paragraphs;
check the spelling and grammar; take a polite, positive, enthusiastic and confident tone

– Do not expect high pay and comfortable job– Organizations look for keen helpers but not
leisure players

University• Behave like a delegate of HKU
• Stick to the agreed terms
• No early departure
– Do your best to maintain a good relationship between HKU and external bodies

• You should not reject or resign from the assigned training place for unreasonable excuses such as: – a) To engage with another company for reasons, such
as higher pay and convenient location;
– b) To prepare for viva/supplementary examination;
– c) To settle family/private affairs;
– d) To start doing Final Year Project earlier;
– e) To go for a holiday
– f) Other unjustifiable reasons.

• During Training– Report for duty punctually, work with
commitment, and stay until the last day of the agreed training period
– SAFETY FIRST! Avoid doing harm to yourself and others
– Obey the company regulations. Respect your seniors and fellow workers
– If in doubt, contact the ME Dept.

Assessment
• You have to write weekly log records and a training report
• You shall submit the training report to ME Dept. by 30 Sep 2010 (Thursday)– Your submission date of the training documents will be
recorded in the training report
– No report will be accepted by the Dept. after the first week of October, and the industrial training of the late-submission students will be marked as “failed”

Assessment
• Company feedback– The company will be invited to evaluate your
performance
• Training report– It will be duly marked by your NA Tutor
• A student may fail the training course if his/her training performance is unsatisfactory– A training certificate will be issued to indicate the
quality of training results: Pass with distinction; Pass; and Fail

Exemption/Postponement
• You may apply for exemption or postponement of industrial training for good reasons such as:– You have completed a period of approved industrial
training prior to your entry to HKU;– You are going to join the study-work programme
(sandwich one year)– You have joined the Intensified Learning Opportunity
Programme (ILOP) or other recognized internships
• Please submit an application as soon as possible for Dept’s consideration

cover letter (they often affect your chance of getting summer training posts!)

Weekly Log Record
• A brief record that summarizes your training activities on a weekly basis
• Training supervisors may refer to it from time to time for monitoring your training progress
• A useful reference for preparing the training report • A weekly log record template together with a
make-up example can be downloaded from the training website

• A comprehensive record of your industrial training
• An important basis for assessing your performance and to decide whether you pass or fail the industrial training course
• An important document for supporting your application for professional engineer status

Training Report
• Typed on A4 paper, one-sided and with proper margins. It should be bound with reasonable quality
• The nominal length is about 2500 words• Focus on reporting what you have done and learnt.
Avoid unnecessary details. • You may include photos, computer programmes,
or company brochures in the report as appropriate– You must obtain prior approval for disclosure of
company information

• Faculty can help trainees apply for training subsidy (about $3,500)
